Guess the 25 Man Roster

Guess the 25 Man Roster

With Spring Training under way, I figured this would be a better time than any to take a stab at this years Opening Day roster.   After a stellar 2012 and an uneventful off season this years squad should be a little easier to predict. A few holes remain though such as who will round out the bench and who will be the fifth starter. So I'll start with my best guess.

Catchers:
Matt Wieters
Taylor Teagarden

Little doubt here

Infield:
Chris Davis
Brian Roberts
Manny Macahdo
JJ Hardy
Ryan Flaherty
Alexi Casilla
Wilson Betemit

This is the hardest to predict. Casilla offers more on the base paths than anyone else which the O's severely lacked last year. Flaherty may be the odd man out, but I have a hard time seeing him ousted after staying on the roster all last year as a Rule 5 pick. To me, Flaherty and Casilla offer more right now than Canzler or Valencia or any of the other candidates do. Still I have some serious doubt that this is how it will actually will pan out.

Outfield:
Adam Jones
Nate McClouth
Nick Markakis
Nolan Reimold

The versatility of McClouth makes a 4 man outfield plausible, and Davis can always slot in if needed. Jones and Nick should barely sit.

Starters:
Wei-Yin Chen
Jason Hammel
Miguel Gonzalez
Chris Tillman
Zach Britton

The first 4 should be near locks. Tillman finished very strong and it would be an upset if he were left out. The question is the fifth spot where I have Britton. He's looking strong early in camp and is reportedly healthy now. Buck is going to go with the 5 best out of camp and to me Britton will step up.

Bullpen:
Jim Johnson
Pedro Strop
Darren O'Day
Jake Arrieta
Troy Patton
Steve Johnson
Luis Ayala

A lot of talent is left off in this situation. To me, Matusz has too much promise left to stay in the pen. Jair has options left and should start at Norfolk. I wouldn't be totally shocked if Bundy made the team but the smart decision decision is to start him the minors with so many options. Steve Johnson is probably my fifth starter if Britton struggles but either way he has to make the roster. MacFarland won't make it two straight years with a rule 5 pick making the roster. As for Tommy Hunter, he's done.

So that's my guess. Anyone else care to add their thoughts?

Re: Guess the 25 Man Roster

I think it will come down to who has options left over performance in ST

Bundy Is probably good enough to make a lot of rotations around MLB but I think we keep him down until we need him regardless of how good he pitches this month - why start the clock until you have to?

Buck is a master of working the 40 man roster - I can't remember a year like 2012 where everyone one on the 40 contributed in some fashion.

I don't think Steve J or Arrieta go to the pen - you want those guys in AAA pitching every 5th day for depth - they'll probably stash TJ McFarlene in the pen early on

Hoping we carry a defensive corner IF on the bench

I would probably agree about Stevie if he had any options left. There is no way he would clear waivers.

Re: Guess the 25 Man Roster

I'm pretty sure he has 1-2 left,

We used 1 option last year
and maybe the year SF took him in the RULE 5 counted as 1

Make sure you're not looking at JIM Johnson - I made that mistake at first

Re: Guess the 25 Man Roster

I think that is a pretty close guess but wonder if Matusz, Yada, and Jair are all left off. I don't see that happening.  With all this pitching depth (and I know the ole you can't have too much pitching line) I really hope they parlay some of that in to some more bats. We can debate this ad naseum but with this set of players plus Bundy and Gausmann for crying out loud there is no way we can use all of that pitching come next year so lets turn it into a stick and then I would feel very very good about our chances this and the next few years.

I don't think Wada breaks camps with the team

+ at least 1 pitcher will get hurt

Barring trades I agree with most of the roster with exception in parenthensis above though I dont think I know the full 60 man spring training roster to add anymore names.

Re: Guess the 25 Man Roster

Ok you guys are right about Stevie. The rule 5 year threw me off but that shouldn't factor into his options. He would probably be best set for the rotation in AAA.

I also agree with ifsteve about trading some of this surplus in arms. Bundy and Gausman both stand a good chance of reaching the majors this year. We could certainly package a couple along with a prospect and get a pretty solid bat in return. It is something I would wait for inside the season though as the rotation always seems to get much more thin after the season begins.

RE: Guess the 25 Man Roster

Hammel
Chen
Tillman
Gonzalez
Britton

Matusz
Hunter
Ayala
Strop
Patton
O'Day
Johnson

Wieters
Davis
Roberts
Machado
Hardy
Reimold
Jones
Markakis
Betemit

McLouth
Pearce
Teagarden
Casilla

AAA:
S. Johnson, Arrieta, Jurrjens, Clark, Flaherty
AA:
Bundy
Gausman
DL:
Wada
Not in organization:
McFarland
Canzler

That would leave three spots on the 40 man roster open. DD can get creative with those spots.

Now that Spring Training has progressed a bit, I thought I'd bump this up again to see what people were thinking.

Rotation:
Hammel
Chen
Tillman
Gonzalez
Johnson

Bullpen:
JJohnson
Strop
Ayala
O'day
Hunter
Matusz
McFarland
Patton

Infield:
Davis
Roberts
Hardy
Machado
Casilla
Betemit
Weiters
Teagarden

Outfield:

Jones
Markakis
McClouth
Reimold

4 righties in the rotation opens up 3 lefty bullpen arms. Britton and Arieta are not showing enough consistency and pitch count awareness to start the season, still rooting for them and Matusz to become rotation staples

Re: Guess the 25 Man Roster

Duquette was just on WEEI in Boston and a few interesting takes.
1. The question was whether he thought the O's could replicate their success and he mentioned Jim Johnson Strop and O'Day as very good pieces to their bullpen and mentioned 2 lefties Patton and Matusz. Was he being less guarded w this since it was an out of market interview?

2. When asked why he was optimistic about the O's not having a let down this year he spoke about the improved depth and their focus on defense. He mentioned McClouth and Machado as reasons our defense has improved and also mentioned Chris Dickerson. He said he he'll be a major contributor for us. Interesting, so if his injury isn't bad does he break camp on the 25 man roster?

3. Biggest concern was starting rotation staying healthy and consistent. Mentioned Gausman and Bundy as two guys who can step in if the starters faulter. Does this mean they are 1st in line for call up, that's what it sounded like.

Don't get much insider info being from MA but it was interesting how open DD was.

Re: Guess the 25 Man Roster

Well I guess most of the "guess work" is gone.

Pitchers (12): Jake Arrieta, Luis Ayala, Wei-Yin Chen, Miguel Gonzalez, Jason Hammel, Tommy Hunter, Jim Johnson, Brian Matusz, T.J. McFarland, Darren O’Day, Troy Patton, Pedro Strop.

Hitters (12): Alexi Casilla, Chris Davis, Ryan Flaherty, J.J. Hardy, Adam Jones, Manny Machado, Nick Markakis, Nate McLouth, Nolan Reimold, Brian Roberts, Taylor Teagarden, Matt Wieters.

my guess for the 25th spot would be 1B-OF Steve Pearce.

RE: Guess the 25 Man Roster

I may end up being wrong but I do know this - Buck loves to move around his lineups. However, if he settles on something one day, maybe once things shake out a little more about what the Orioles have, this would be cool to see:

1 RF/DH Nick Markakis
2 3B Manny Machado
3 CF Adam Jones
4 LF/DH Giancarlo Stanton
5 C Matt Wieters
6 1B Chris Davis
7 SS J.J. Hardy
8 DH/LF/RF Nate McLouth/Conor Jackson
9 2B Brian Roberts

BN Steve Pearce, Alexi Casilla, Conor Jackson, Taylor Teagarden

1 Jason Hammel
2 Wei-Yin Chen
3 Miguel Gonzalez
4 Jake Arrieta
5 Dylan Bundy

CL Tommy Hunter
SU Darren O'Day
MR Pedro Strop, Troy Patton, Luis Ayala
LR Brian Matusz, T.J. McFarland

The O's trade to the Marlins Jim Johnson, Kevin Gausman, Nolan Reimold, Ryan Flaherty, and Chris Tillman for Giancarlo Stanton.

Probably wouldn't happen but it's worth it for the O's. That lineup puts them over the top if you ask me.

Also notice Tommy Hunter in at closer. I'm announcing it right here -- I'm a huge Tommy Hunter as a reliever fan. Just watch, a whole season in there in relief? I can see 70-80 IP with 90-100 K with him throwing 99-101 out there. I know it's unlikely but I'm telling you, he's going to be special in relief.
