Orioles Extend Buck and Duquette Through 2018
" Fresh off of their first playoff appearance in 15 years, the Orioles have decided to keep their leadership structure in place for the foreseeable future. The team announced extensions for manager Buck Showalter and executive VP of baseball operations Dan Duquette through the 2018 season."http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/01/orioles-exte nd-duquette-showalter.html

Re: Orioles Extend Buck and Duquette Through 2018
Beat me to it. This has got to be a sign that Angelos is serious about contending. I mean, a 5 year deal for both a manager and general manager? When's the last time he did that?
Anyone kinda find it funny how Chris Davis' grand slam was his 4th home run on his 4th at bat, driving in 4 runs, causing the O's to win by 4 runs on Opening Day, the 4th game of the season?
If that's not Earl talking from above...

Great move! Gives the team stability, players like to know who they will be playing for. With their current contract this gives them both six more seasons. Nice!
Seeing Brooks Robinson reminds us of a time when everything was good for the Orioles. When players played for the love of the game and were proud to be called a Baltimore Oriole.

RE: Orioles Extend Buck and Duquette Through 2018
I'm not expecting them to make a super huge splash this offseason and I'm fine with that. They made moves last offseason that I questioned and I was proven wrong. It can be a little unnerving that there's no major news but it's like that for the most part across the board with most of the teams in baseball.

Re: Orioles Extend Buck and Duquette Through 2018
Nice writeup Rip. And I think you have assessed the situation fairly well albeit perhaps with a bit of orange colored glasses. The one point I really disagree on is First Base. I agree that Davis can be adequate and his bat is pretty potent. But I think we are going to see a big drop off with the loss of Reynolds. 1. His defense is what turned the overall defense around the second half. And yes brining up Manny to third was a good addition. 2. We already had Davis' bat in the lineup so what we don't gain anything with him at First. But we lose Reynolds, strikeouts and all. But he was the only player on this team who could truly carry the team with his bat for stretches when he got hot. So my real concern is that if we regress a bit this year, which I see happening, does it turn off the fans and even more the FA to where they once again shun coming to BMore?

The second defense is better by a very large margin in my opinion. Dude, reading comprehension is clearly not your strong suit. Go back and read what I said in point #1. If you think Davis and Machado is better than Reynolds and Machado then I disagree but so be it. Nowhere did I bring up Betemit.

If you think Davis and Machado is better than Reynolds and Machado then I disagree but so be it. Nowhere did I bring up Betemit. Eye rolling and insults don't help anyone. The fact of the matter is, his defense was insignificant towards the overall defensive improvement. If Machado had never come up, the defense would have still stunk with Betemit at 3B and Reynolds at 1B. With Machado at 3B and Davis at 1B the defense would have still been very good. Therefore, Reynolds defense did not turn around the overall defense, Machado's did. That's the point I made. I'm sorry if you didn't understand that.

Re: Orioles Extend Buck and Duquette Through 2018
Ok sorry for the insult. Bottom line question - which defense do you think would be better? Machado and Reynolds or Machado and Davis? My base point is that I think we have a fair dropoff with the later and we would still have Davis' bat in the lineup if we kept Reynolds. So I believe the O's are less of a team now. We have not improved the lineup and I think the defense drops a bit. And since it looks more and more like Roberts isn't going to be any major contributor then we are banking our entire improvement on a healthy Reimold and that makes me very nervous.

Re: Orioles Extend Buck and Duquette Through 2018
Davis has a .950 fielding % at 1st in over 260 games with just 10 errors in the MLB. A fact I overlooked with my orginal statement on another topic and went ahead retract my statement. Davis seems to be able to handle 1st and has power therefore im fine with the choice.

I don't think anyone can honestly give an objective opinion until we actually see Machado-Davis. I say wait it out and give it time.

RE: Orioles Extend Buck and Duquette Through 2018
From what I've seen, Machado-Reynolds is the better option.
Frankly, I don't like the thought of Davis at 1B. Buck is really supporting him in the press, but he did the exact same thing with Reynolds at 3B last night.
