Who Should the 'Slugger' Be?

Who Should the 'Slugger' Be?

Seems like most all of us feel the O's need at least one big bat to hit 4th and provide some major power to the lineup. So, who should it be?
Should they try to get someone from the FA list? Or should they be looking to do a trade with someone, who perhaps would like a couple of young arms?

Lets see what we can come up with.

I'd have to double check who is available but I'm pretty sure there's no free agent available that can slug for us.

I'd like the O's to get the STANTON kid from the MIAMI MARLINS. I wonder what it would take to get him?crazy

I know the pickins are slim..but I don't think Scott is the type of slugger we need. But I honestly don't know who anymore might fit that bill and how much the O's are willing to spend to obtain such a player.

Any "slugger" we get takes at bats from Davis. Unless a star falls from the sky we need to see if Davis can build off his strong 2012. At the end of 2013 we should know if Davis is our 1B of present and future or super utility/dh type.

Right now I think the concern would be if they can't get someone that can bat clean up then at least get someone that can platoon with Betemit at DH against left handed pitching. I'd really like to see Pearce take that role. In 34 at-bats, he batted .294 with a .618 slugging against left handed pitching. He also hit 3 homeruns in those 34 at-bats while our best hitters Davis and Jones only had 7 in 113 and 161 respectively against left handers.

I think we need to go and get Michael Morse from the Nationals. He's always been a good average batter with a lot of power. I think all he needs is an opportunity to be a everyday player and he will explode. He is exactly what we need. What's your thoughts?

Respectfully disagree. A slugger will complement Davis. He isn't a cleanup hitter. We need another big, reliable bat in the lineup to go along with Davis. O's clearly do want to build around him--by cutting Reynolds loose they made that clear....but they still need another big bat IMO...not to steal AB's from Davis but to enhance the overall lineup.

I have to agree. The O's need a solid #4 hitter that can drive in runs. That should make Davis and Jones even better by giving them more protection in the line up.

Re: Who Should the 'Slugger' Be?

Making the lineup work is a challenge as long as Adam Jones and his low OBP is in the middle of it. However, I would like the O's to consider platooning Reimold with Betemit as DH. Brian Roberts has been a better hitter left handed than right handed most of his career, so maybe what you do is have BRob lead off against righties and Reimold against left handers.

But this assumes facts not in evidence, namely, that Roberts and Reimold will be healthy and play up to standards next year.

vs. righties                                        vs. lefties

Roberts, 2b                                        Reimold, DH
Markakis, RF                                       Markakis, RF
Jones, CF                                           Jones, CF
Davis, 1B                                            Wieters, C
Wieters, C                                          Davis, 1B
Betemit, DH                                        Hardy, SS
Hardy, SS                                          McLouth, LF
Machado, 3B                                       Machado, 3B
McLouth, LF                                        Casilla, 2b

Not a bad lineup but I think if Roberts is healthy than I play him against both L and R pitchers. Maybe bat him first against R and last against L?

Re: Who Should the 'Slugger' Be?

I think the O's would be happy to get 100 good games from BRob in 2013, but again, after his last three years, we can't count on that .

And the same for the team in general. Last year, Nick missed a boatload of games after being Mr. Consistent the previous several years. There will be injuries, which is why we pencil in line-ups this time of year.

I'd like to see Butler however that is not going to happen this offseason.

Steal Napoli from the red sox.... might even get him around 9-10 million a year if you can spin him on sticking it to the red sox.

Right now the idea of Betemit as DH without a solid middle of the order bat doesn't excite me.

apparently he didn't exactly pass his physical with flying colors. I hear the Sox are trying to  modify the trade. He may be damaged goods.

I mentioned it in the LaRoche thread but basically if Napoli does have a hip condition, then it could seriously sap his hitting.
