Buck Was Moneyballed!

Buck Was Moneyballed!

Bob Melvin was named AL Manager of the Year over Buck Showalter. Naturally I am very biased, but I'm also very disappointed. The O's have been worse longer than the A's. What Buck did for Baltimore baseball I believe should have gotten him this award. Oh well, at least the Sporting News got it right.

Davy Johnson, in an irony, was NL manager of the year. No real surprise there. Except that if the voting was done after the WS, I have to think Bochy would have won it.

I have to agree! Buck worked wonders with a team that the media is still trying to say was just lucky while nothing against Melvin but Billy got him the players by making smart trades for some talented youngsters.

Re: Buck Was Moneyballed!

Forget the exact day, but at some point in very early June, the A's had the same record as the Houston Astro's, and then went on a four month run to the pennant in what was the toughest division in baseball, the AL West.

I am not downplaying what Buck and Duquette did or overstating what Melvin and Beane did. I think in the end the difference was the A's, with about 30 million less in payroll than the Orioles, actually won their division while the O's had to settle for the wild card.

The AL East is usually considered the toughest division so I think the playing field was level this past season. Perhaps it was the fact the A's knocked out Texas while the O's just couldn't quite nip the Yanks that swung the vote.

It's BS but I remember back in September Buck saying awards are just that awards but trophies are results of winning and the WS trophy is his goal today and long term. when asked about manager of the year.

It sucks that Buck didn't win but honestly, I thought it could have gone either way with him or Melvin. Still I do have to wonder if the A's won because of Melvin or was it Beane that made them winners again?

Re: Buck Was Moneyballed!

Saw a quote from Buck that said if he had a vote, he'd have voted for Melvin (from the baseball writer from The Sun, I think). If he isn't upset, why should I be?

I do believe the AL West was the toughest division last year because they only had four teams, and three of them went down to the wire. The AL East has five teams with three going down to the wire but the Red Sox and Jays pretty much stunk, so that's why I said the AL West was best.

Congratulations to Bob Melvin. Bob and Buck were obviously both deserving of the award. Buck doesn't need an award to tell him what a good job he did.

So Melvin gets bonus points bc the A's had to go on an amazing tear while Buck kept the O's above water the entire season?

probably. Nobody expected anyone to unseat Texas. Had the O's beat the Yanks for the AL East, I believe Buck would have won the award.

Re: Buck Was Moneyballed!

I guess that they were a little hesitant to give Buck too much credit for the turnaround considering that he was the manager last year when the team had a bad record. He should have won it in 2010 though.
