Game 1: Palmer or Clausen - who ya got?!

After seeing the first live game action, who do you feel will be better for the Bears? I want Clausen to win out. I think he's the bigger name and can't be hidden if we let him go? Palmer won't be picked up by another team and if someone gets hurt then he can be insurance for us. Of course we all hope Cutler won't ever get hurt.

I think Clausen will win it, Jordan Palmer has bounced around several teams. Jimmy wasn't really given much of a chance in Carolina, I think they failed him, Trestman has revived yet another QB that was thought to be out of the league.

Re: Game 1: Palmer or Clausen - who ya got?!

I would be surprised at this point if it wasn't Clausen.

My favorite throw of his was incomplete. On one play, he got flushed by two uncontested blitzers who were on him instantly. He recognized it quick enough to get rid of the ball and avoid a sack. He should've been flagged for intentional grounding but IMO it was still a good play because it shows he's seeing the field well.

From what I could tell, Clausen was just seeing things quicker. He seemed to be comfortable in the offense and knew where to go with the ball.

I don't see how it can't be Clausen. And honestly it's only one game but I feel better about Clausen then I did. McCown at this time last year.

I vote neither....just being honest. Not really a fan of either. I am not going to judge either based on performances against backup guys and a lot of guys who won't be on the Eagles roster.

Even after saying that, I know it's going to be Clausen.

Re: Game 1: Palmer or Clausen - who ya got?!

Both of them are where they are for a reason: neither is very good.

That said, Clausen has actual starting experience and has more talent. I really don't see how anyone could be comfortable with Palmer as the #2.

He improved a bit as time went on last night, but overall Palmer did not look like someone you'd have confidence in when it comes to winning games for your team.

I don't really think much of Clausen either, but I don't see how you can go with Palmer over him at this point.

I don't think anyone is banging the drum for Palmer, I think it's more a matter of not wanting Clausen. Fales struggled but at least he's a rookie and you expect that. Perhaps it's time to dump Palmer and give his reps to Fales. Give Fales some more reps and see if he's worth keeping.

Clausen played smart, was quicker. Edge so far.

Re: Game 1: Palmer or Clausen - who ya got?!

I'd be good with that. Palmer isn't going anywhere as a pro player. Clausen has been bad too, but he has more of a prototypical backup QB resume as a guy who's had regular season starting experience at some point.

It just seems to me that Palmer is the odd man out, especially since the Tremery seems to like Clausen.

I personally think Clausen sucks too, but he probably sucks less at this point.

Jordan Palmer's best attribute is his brother. He has a long resume that shows he's not an NFL player.

Re: Game 1: Palmer or Clausen - who ya got?!

I would prefer it if Clausen wins the job because he's younger.  He outperformed Palmer, but only by a smidge.  Palmer threw a bad pick that seemed to be all on him, but Clausen blew a TD pass.  Palmer took a sack while Clausen looked like he got away with intentional grounding (he was still between the tackles , right?)

Where I think Clausen clearly advanced in the competition, was not a case of doing better than Palmer, but in doing just as well in an area where he was believed far behind... understanding the offensive scheme.

Who should be Cutler's backup?

Outkasted: "well that's easy...Jay Cutler!"

Lol. Just messing with you man.

Re: Game 1: Palmer or Clausen - who ya got?!

I am really not sure why Mark Sanchez is not on this team.  Cutler does not play a full season, so he would probably end up playing two or three games.  He could have played well, and be in line for a starter's job next season with some other team.  He is a much better QB than McKown.

The Eagles offense is also good, but he is probably not going to get a chance to play and if he does he does not have the WRs the Bears do.

Sanchez and the Bears would have made the ideal combination.

Was thinking the same thing about Sanchez being a better backup over who we have.  But would have rather had McCown over Sanchez.

Re: Game 1: Palmer or Clausen - who ya got?!

I gotta say, I liked Clausen coming out of college and, being in North Carolina, I followed him closely his rookie year. He was god awful bad. He had the weakest arm I ever saw, I don't place arm strength too high on my list of QB attributes but his arm was sad weak, I mean chad Pennington would look like cutler next to him, arm strength wise. Not only that but he made bad decisions (9 INTs, 3 TDs). And he had no pocket awareness. The QB named Clausen I saw last night was not the same guy. Arm wasn't Cutler strong but was way stronger than it was, better decisions, much better pocket awareness. it is only one preseason game but he is looking like he might be a pretty good backup.

Really? I guess your right. Arm Strength really is overrated.

Peyton Manning.. Nevermind.. Tom Brady.. Nevermind.. Brees? ug.. Rodgers? Dang it! Cunningham? Elway? Moon? Marino? Favre? Bradshaw? Kelly? Unitas? Kemp?   I could keep going but I think this where this arm strength isn't that important thing from you needs to stop.

The vast majority of the best QB's have/had great arms at the very least "good" arms.

Sitting there praising guy for looking decent against guys that won't be starters in the NFL this year and practice squad/released players I find amusing as well. Sorry, he looked good all things considered. However, no his arm strength was never tested.  None of his balls he threw had real zip to them. He never had to go REAL deep. He threw ball to Williams about 20-25yards in the air who than did the rest of the work with his legs.  Now the throw itself was great.  Great touch on that pass.  However, no it didn't display any arm strength.  This guy will be our backup.  However, I am going on record now of saying it won't be like Josh, but I hope we never have to find out.

Next pick Cutler throws in the regular seasons Bears fans are going to be asking the Bears to bring in Clausen.  biggrin

Re: Game 1: Palmer or Clausen - who ya got?!

I for one give soupy endless relentless crap for his ridiculous QB ratings and comparisons and umm..."grading systems". Guilty.

However, your response I think is a little silly. We've all addressed our disagreement with arm strength importance with him but that was the least important part of his post in this case.

He was simply saying in a nutshell that regardless of what he saw in college, that maybe he could be an ok BACKUP quarterback.

When he starts calling for him to be the starter I'll jump back on the thrash soupy bandwagon in a heartbeat, but there was nothing wrong with that post he just made and until he gives Cutler more negative ticks and calls for Clauson to replace him bashing him in this last post in particular just lessons the credibility of calling him out in the future in my opinion.

Re: Game 1: Palmer or Clausen - who ya got?!

Yeah I agree....I really expected nothing from Clausen. But he is showing enough in practices, according to people there everyday, and in the first game to show the way this competition is probably going to end.

Not only that, but depending how the rest of the preseason goes enough to push Fales off the 53 and roll the dice with him on the PS, to get that extra roster spot.

Nobody is picking up Jordan Palmer so he will be there waiting for a phone call if there are any injuries.

The bears may have pulled a serious rabbit out of their @ss with the Clausen signing.
