So first pre-season game thoughts

Every one kinda quiet I liked the turn overs we got, I hope brian and williams are okay

I want better play by sutton and ego.

Fales doesn't look to bad though only a few passes.

And I actually think we got a good look at alot of wide outs today

Carey show some flashes and had some good blocks..

some decent undrafted corners possibly

jordan Palmer was ehh but did redeem himself

And tight ends were pretty nice

Remember, tomorrow is promised to no one.

Worried about injuries and special teams

Not worried about the offense.

Cautiously optimistic about the defense.

I am worried about special teams too I dont know why they had weems out there so much.

And I wonder how brian is and williams hamstring.

Other than that just want to see more of ego and sutton and I feel like we seen
some good wide out play from a number of guys. It will be interesting to see who takes and who doesnt

And I hope Shea gets the hang of his position hes got such great speed it would be nice

Remember, tomorrow is promised to no one.

Re: So first pre-season game thoughts

It wasn't on here so I haven't got to watch it yet. From what I've read there's still huge depth concerns on defense, not that we didn't know that already.

As soon as the starters were pulled, three straight scoring drives for Philly.

So while the starting defense with this TINY sample pool appears to give us very cautious optimism, it also appears to be a couple injuries from a repeat of last year.

Disclaimer for the ensuing overreaction claims...I realize it's one preseason game and quite possibly meaningless.

Is Shaun Draughn really the #2 running back. I've never heard of him?

Ditto... Special teams should be lights out in preseason... It's all cusp guys going balls to the wall. Joe D has to be on a short leash.

I don't think he is. Consider that all the other backs have zero NFL experience. I think he started there because he's essentially the only back at this point who knows what he's doing.

Carey was the next in. Even though the stats are ugly, I liked what I saw. He seems like he's a compact, tough little inside runner. I think once he gets up to speed and gets the sufficient experience, he'll be the guy. In the end the talent will win out.

Re: So first pre-season game thoughts

That's not really true. Special teams has been awful the last 5 years in the preseason. It's auditions for guys who normally don't do it. All the blocked punts and missed assignments. The long snapping is the biggest concern. But preseason is usually pretty awful for special teams. Usually there is just a terrible offense to worry about more

It will be interesting to see if Greene starts cutting into any of Shea's reps at the nickel linebacker, that will be the first sign that he's making a move. To this point they have been pretty consistent in using Shea as the first LB off the bench in nickel sets after Briggs and Bostic.

I'd like to see Greene get a shot. I think they're giving Shea every opportunity and then some because of him being a #1 pick.

Adrian Wilson was impressive. Zack Miller fantastic. Corners Al Louis-Jean and Demontre Hurst very good. Michael Ola good. Jeremiah Ratliff looked excellent. Christian Jones did well. Nice to see Jordan Lynch grinding.
Mulligan got a bad call for holding.
Questions remain on KR/PR.

And Joe D has pictures of Emery, so he's not leaving.  He's the Assistant Head Coach FCS, and was considered for HC.

It was hard to evaluate the RBs because only Draugn was thrown to, and I wonder if that means anything.  Also, there was only one short yardage situation.

There was one play I didn't see well, but perhaps somebody can tell me.  It was the Eagle's 2nd possession where a medium completion to a TE was negated by a penalty.  Peae had been credited with the tackle.  What I failed to see was, how was Paea in position to make the tackle that far beyond the LOS?

Re: So first pre-season game thoughts

I'm that rare fan who actually really likes the preseason lol.

I finally watched the replay right now and here is my armchair coach/fan/expert analyst take on the game...

First, the bad:

Jordan Palmer didn't look all that great to me. He has like zero mobility and I wasn't impressed with his pocket awareness either. He almost fumbled the ball at his own 2 yard line because he wasn't agile enough to avoid a bull rush right in front of him. Several times his lack of mobility played a part in bad throws.

Special teams needs work but that's preseason for you.

Aside from maybe two or three times, the reserve d-line was getting no pressure on the QB. They also looked lost on this stupid misdirection rubs that Chip Kelly is famous for. As in, DE's weren't even looking at the ball carrier when they ran by.

Eric Weems in the slot just worries me.

Shea McClellin, oh where do I begin lol. He just looked lost almost the entire game. He missed a few tackles, he got lost in coverage multiple times and if I wasn't really paying close attention to #50, I don't think I would've even noticed he was on the field. It might be time for Emery and crew to accept that they made a mistake. He's just a liability on the field, imho.

And now for the good...

Cutler looked solid in limited reps. I liked what I seen from Clausen, especially that he has some mobility and that he really does throw a tight spiral. Really want to see him working with the 2's on Thursday night.

Ka'Deem Carey was a stud, imho. He didn't have the big runs but he showed good patience, excellent moves and strength to break tackles and he excelled in pass protection, which is a huge plus. I think Draughn better be worried about his standing on the depth chart because the rookie is on his heels. But that's just my opinion.

I also liked how Jordan Lynch ran the ball with power. He bulldozed some poor schmuck in the 4th quarter. I'm no NIU homer or anything like that but I sure do hope the kid can find a spot on the roster. The running game could use a hard nosed runner like him.

Josh Morgan came down with some nice catches and showed his ability to get some yac. I really wish they'd give him a shot to work from the slot with the 1's next week to see what he can do.

The starting D-line of Houston, Young, Paea and Ratliff did a fine job in limited reps. They stuffed the run and put a lot of pressure on the reigning Napoleon Dynamite lookalike award winner, Nick Foles. Twice, Houston and Young met at the QB and put hits on him and one of those times resulted in an INT.

Kyle Fuller is going to be a stud! He was all over the field making open field tackles, breaking passes and just making plays!

Speaking of cornerbacks, I liked what I seen from Demontre Hurst and Al Louis Jean. They tackled, they broke up passes and Louis Jean had an INT and almost had another layer in the 4th. Just quality depth at that position and I'd hate to be the guys who gave to make the final decisions on who they keep. Special teams is where they will have to excel though.

Oh and the TE's pretty darn good too.

And that's about it. There were a lot of players who caught my eye during the game but this post has already been long-winded enough haha. Looking forward to next week.

GO BEARS!!!!

I hope brian is not hurt to bad. We need to keep depth at offensive line

defensively we seem to have good depth on the D line.

And in the secondary as well.

I am worried about the OL.  They seem to be going down like the DL last year, but earlier in the season which might make it easier to cope with, and so far none of the injuries seem to be season-ending.

True, I saw good play from numerous DL, but they were all vets.  Didn't see much from rookies.

I think I've chosen Al Louis-Jean as my training camp hero.

I know that, but why extend courtesy to a bum?  Because he's disabled?  Because he's brave and fiery?
