Who will be the Bears suprise star this year?

Before training camp starts, who do you think will surprise everyone by either claiming a starting spot, or contributing way more than expected?

    Who will surpass expectations?

  1. Poll closed on 07/19/2014
  2. Carey: 10 votes
  3. Sutton: 11 votes
  4. Cutler: 1 vote
  5. McClellin: 13 votes
  6. Williams: 4 votes
  7. Vereen: 7 votes
  8. Conte: 2 votes
  9. Other (explain below): 5 votes
    -   -   -   -   -   -   -   Truth is treason in the empire of lies.

Good poll.

I was going between Sutton and McClellin but I went with Shea. I think our DEs are going to command a decent amount of attention this year, and this should free up guys coming from the OLB spot(s). Barring the injury bug I can him getting double-digit sacks and a pick or two. I think Sutton will do better than expected, but the general consensus is that McClellin is a bust - it'll be huge if he puts up even solid numbers.

I'll take a shot that Chris Williams will shine as a returner. I think he also may prove to be a better WR than Devin Hester. From his highlight reel he shows some pretty good hands.

Expectations for Shea are so low that it wouldn't take much for him to surpass them. Hell...some have such low expectations that just making the roster would be enough to win this for him.

I am going to go with Wilson.  Not sure how he didn't make the list.

Cutler having a sold to great season won't really surprise me to be honest.

I thought about adding him, but expectations are pretty high for him already. IMO, he's either going to meet expectations, or fall short. He's not going to beat out either of our top two WR's though.

I don't think expectations should be high for him. We can surely hope, but with nothing to go out on but "talk" him becoming a real producer should be surprising at least some what. Of course he isn't going to beat out the other two receivers. Just like Carey isn't going to beat Forte(barring injury)

Is there any possible way Cutler can contribute more then expected? We need him to play at a pro bowl level to compete for championships. It's time for Jay to have a breakout season that solidifies him as one of the top QBs in the NFL. Something on the order of 4200 yds, 30 TDs and 10 INTs. That performance, with a solid defensive team would put us in the championship hunt. Bear Down!

I went with Brock Vereen. Why? Because he's not Major Wright and he's not Chris Conte.

He's going to have more than 10 ints. But yes, he does need to throw 28-35 TDS. I think 12-16 ints is probably more realistic.  He's a gunslinger. That's not going to change. However, he needs to get that TD total up so 14 ints doesn't look so bad if he throws 31 TD's..   But if he goes 19 tds and 14 ints that's just not going to get the job done and he will have underperformed.

I don't care how many ints he throws so long as he throws the game winning TDs or out scores the other team.  Favre  threw a ton of ints but 99% of the time he threw the winning pass or outscored his opponents (in his prime) that's the definition of a gunslinger.  The int stat means nothing if the guy wins it only matters (at that point)  to the people that constantly dog the guy in the media and around the water cooler.  Even if he trows 40 tds and 0 ints he will still be blasted for frowning on the sideline or something stupid so forget about the ints if he's winning... if he's not then you bet the ratio will be what defines him in the end.

My guy is Vereen...  Anything to keep Conte off the field gets my vote!  On draft day he was being compared or mentioned as having the capacity to be our next Mike Brown.  If that even is a half truth I'd be ecstatic.  For years the Bears undervalued the S position or put guys back there that took years to be serviceable if he solidifies the S position one of my biggest complaints about this team will be put to rest.

I went with -
Surprise to earn a staring spot, de la Puente C (no inside info, just a hunch)
Contribute more than expected, Marguess Wilson WR (should have room to roam and covered by 4th or 5th defender)
Rookie of the year (team) Pat O'Donnell P

Yeah there are a few players I didn't see on the list who could count as surprise players.  Good call on BDLP.  I hope he doesn't contribute much this year as that would mean someone got hurt or demoted.

Re: Who will be the Bears suprise star this year?

Wow,  I think it’s a statement of how good this draft class and offseason could be that there is not one vote for our number one draft pick in this poll…. Not only that he’s not in the poll, but that he’s not even mentioned in the responses.

With that said, I’m going to go with T. Jennings in his new roll at Nickel Safety.  Of course, this will be due in part to Fuller becoming a competent nickel CB, allowing Jennings to move to nickel safety (which is the plan), and will be more than 50% of the snaps…. Maybe upwards of 65% of snaps, from some of the reports I’ve read.  That’s a lot of snaps at safety, and I think that will go a long way in improving the safety position on this team.  I expect him to have a great year in his new position.

My vote goes to Punting Pat. He will break the record for most successful faked punts in a single season this year.
