Micheal Sam. Your thoughts...?

I'm surprised there isn't a thread yet. This issue is a day old. I know it is a touchy subject area, but I'd like to think we can have a grown up discussion about it.

My thoughts are I personally don't care one way or the other. I do though think he won't be drafted because of him coming out. I don't think a GM will want the circus coming to town. I also don't think the locker room is ready for it. You know some guys won't want to shower with him.

I know the media is making our culture seem like the world is excepting but many aren't still.

RE: Micheal Sam. Your thoughts...?

People said the same thing about Te'o and he was drafted in the first round. I think Sam gets drafted where he should get drafted. He is a "tweener" and will get drafted as such. I'm amazed at the coverage by this because though the media, according to your post, makes the world seem accepting. It is the media that is making this the issue that it is. I can't think of any other organization that can get away with making it this hard to be open about sexuality and not be riddled with lawsuits and media bashing by every LGBT organization on the planet. Why the NFL is an exception to the rule is beyond me. I think it is absurd and ridiculous and the US is no better than Russia if a player can not come out and do what he is good at, and in Sams case it is play football. And if players can't except that then they're bigoted and need to be trained in diversity. No matter what my stance is on sexuality it is not my right to keep someone from doing what they want to do for a career and it is not my right to be disrespectful.

RE: Micheal Sam. Your thoughts...?

He is an undersized pass rush specialist that had 11.5 sacks & 19 TFL for a decent SEC team.  He will be drafted in the mid-rounds, about where is was projected, whether he likes men, women or small woodland animals.  Many reports indicate that his draft stock will drop.  I'm not buying it.  All it takes is one team to step up & grab him in the 3rd round & I would bet that someone will...

RE: Micheal Sam. Your thoughts...?

I hope his stock drops and the Bears draft him at a steal, while featuring him on next seasons Hard Knocks because I don't believe in all of the circus narratives. Good player and may just be a nice fit if the bears do indeed go hybrid, though I do say all the time how I hate tweaners

Also, good for him for coming out knowing his stock could plummet and he could lose a fortune in the process. Hope he gets the opportunity he deserves, somewhere with a good coach.

Re: Micheal Sam. Your thoughts...?

It's a smart move on his part. Talent wise, guys like him are a dime-a-dozen. This move elevates him to being the most talked about mid-level prospect in NFL history.

Book deals, endorcements, speaking engagements, made for TV movies, this guys path is set for him even if he never plays a relevent down in the NFL.

As to weather the locker room is "ready". They're employees like the rest of us. They're going to do what they have to to keep the paychecks coming. If the league mandates them to act a certain way, they will. And if they don't, they will pay the price.

Re: Micheal Sam. Your thoughts...?

Sam is not the first gay player in the NFL nor he will be the last.

He definitely is not a high pick but if the Bears pick him in the mid-rounds, he could be a nice bargain that is a good contributor.

Re: Micheal Sam. Your thoughts...?

On a personal level I don't care...if he can play he can play.

If I'm a GM though I avoid drafting him because of the distraction that it is going to be both on and off the field.  If the goal is getting 53 guys unified and winning a championship, and 16 of those guys aren't OK with a homosexual teammate, and as a result its going to create tension...then he isn't a player I'm looking to add. The fact that he is a fringe player adds to this even further.  A GM/team might be more accepting of a defensive/offensive stud being gay if he is a game changer.  But do I want mass media coverage and constant interviews from a 4th or 5th round pick?  Probably not.

I admire the kid for being honest to himself and those around him about his orientation.  That could not have been an easy decision to make and he should be applauded for it.

I'm happy for him. Don't care where he gets drafted, but I hope it's not a big deal that he's there...

I just don't understand why people have to announce this stuff I feel like it's all for attention inless some said some thing of him or whatever but I think that whether you're straight or gay you shouldn't have to announce it show up on a draft a play football live your life stop worrying about what everyone else thinks

but the same time stop trying to push your views on what you want to do with your life and everyone else like they should just accept the way you live your life and in live life like yoursbecause at the end of the day you can live your life however you want and not everyone is going to accept you I'm trying to have everyone except you and force it down their throats is it going to make it better thats not gonna get you anywhere so basically live your life and stop worrying about what everyone else thinks stop buying for attention stupid and annoying

being gay doesn't make you any more special being straight just the way you choose to live your life it doesn't have to be out there for everyone hear because in my opinion if you need everyone to know how you're living your life and you never want to accept the way you want to live your life and I'll be so you have some questions and doubts about how you're living a life so you need everyone to justify your life to feel good except the way you're going to live your life

Remember, tomorrow is promised to no one.

I applaud him for being true to his own self and brave enough to be bluntly honest about it. Hopefully he gets drafted and makes an impact because in order for him to matter he can't just be average; he has to be something truly special. Now...I do think it might cause some issues with teammates in the locker room but hopefully nothing major comes of it.

Re: Micheal Sam. Your thoughts...?

Well if what you wrote were true....nobody would care...nobody would interview him, and nobody would talk about him on a message board that has nothing to do with Missouri.

But it is a relevant story.....whether you like it or not, it is someone for kids to look up to, who may be going through the same fears that Michael Sam had to go through.

I don't understand how somebody doesn't think this is a big story. Turn the channel if it makes you uncomfortable.

The guy is gay, and didn't want to have to pretend he wasn't just to play football.

WTF are you even talking about?

No it doesn't make you anymore "special" than being straight.  Maybe you'll get it a bit more with that line of thinking.  He came out because he didn't want it to be a distraction later on down the road. Get it over with now. First year or two it will be a story.   But my point is, you're right it shouldn't be a story.  But because our country isn't completely there yet, it is a story.   When men and women don't have to  "come out" and can just be themselves, and it's a NON story, we will be a better country for it.   And yes, there are other gay players out there, but none of them had the courage he did to come out of the closet.  I applaud him for not being ashamed of who he is, and do it knowing it may cost him lots of money.  I hope this guy succeeds wherever he goes.   Ruin that whole notion that if you're gay you aren't a "real man".  I agree with anytime. If he is there in the 3+ round up I would love to see the Bears give the kid a shot.

Re: Micheal Sam. Your thoughts...?

Sorry but that bothers me. Maybe they just felt it was none of anyone's business. It really has nothing to do with being courageous. It's just comes how you want to live your life. I happen to have some gay friends/colleagues who are very quiet about it not because they are afraid of being ridiculed and spurn upon but rather they don't want to used as a political weapon by some gay rights activists. One even told me she doesn't want people to treat her differently by people saying how great she is just because she is openly say. She put it best over lunch one day, "I might be gay but what if I was a raging b**** who treated everyone like dirt. Would I still be great?"

Some people just don't want to be a political statement, they just want to live their lives in peace. I don't judge Sam because he wants to live openly gay but I also don't judge those who decide to live quietly about it as well. Some in the media particularly on The Score need to learn that.

Re: Micheal Sam. Your thoughts...?

I don't disagree with anything you said Cubfan. I am just glad we will most likely have our first "Openly" gay NFL player and maybe in a few years it just won't be news worthy anymore.
It will be the media that makes this a big deal, that and the morons in the world that give a sh*t one way or the other. Meaning those who are violently against gays and act on it and those who feed off of the drama of it.
I also realize that it is a "big deal" for the gay political movement, of which i care very little. All that being said, things have come a long way just in my lifetime. It wasn't that long ago when it was against the law. Can you imagine having the threat of Life in prison because you were born a certain way?

Re: Micheal Sam. Your thoughts...?

He got in front of the story since the rumors were already spreading among teams. A very good move by Sam to take control of the narrative. It is a bold and brave thing to do. Now that the topic is raised, I think a lot of players and teams are now thinking "what was the big deal?" and "can he improve our team?"  If Trestman has a role for him, I'd love to see him on the Bears. IMO, It may be a distraction  in preseason, with all the inevitable coverage. But, once week 1 starts, it will be  all about the football.

Re: Micheal Sam. Your thoughts...?

I was the manager of a gay gal who worked with a bunch of young red blooded guys. She made the mistake of letting them know she was gay. It became blatant sexual harrassment and I told her I would be glad to put a stop to it if she wanted. I also told her that it may be worse for her if they knew she had gone to management and became known as a "whistle-blower". I told her I could get her another job in this town that would pay the same if that is what she wanted. She opted for that. I told her to do herself a favor and keep her mouth shut next time. While I have no problems with people that are gay, I also know that it will be an issue. Competing for a roster spot, other players trash talking, fans, the media attention, etc, etc, etc.

What you should have done was start firing the guys.noidea

I would have had to fire them all. Replacing 16 guys in this town is next to impossible. If she wanted that I would have been glad to make a statement but she would have been an outcast. No win situation.
