Bears interested in Ball State QB Keith Wenning?

Bears interested in Ball State QB Keith Wenning?

I thought I would share this since the topic of drafting a developmental QB has come up quite a bit here this season.

David Haugh was on Mully and Hanley this morning talking about N. Illinois and their game against Ball State.  During the conversation, Haugh noted that there were a few Bears scouts at the game, presumably to check out some players, particularly Wenning.

I don't know much about him or anything and am not offering an opinion here, just sharing the information.  So if anyone has seen this guy play a lot, feel free to share your opinion, good or bad.

His projected draft status is supposedly rounds 4-6.

He sounds good based on projected round and college numbers. I guess I will need to check out a couple games.

Sounds like a back up. Not I'm sure I'm interested on using a pick on that with McCown doing well, although he's getting pretty old.

I'd rather get a higher round guy for Trest to groom since this contract will probably be Cutlers last. Probably a little early for that though given our other needs.

That's my two cents. (Which is worth less).

NIU has been having success for years. Have any of their players had any success in the NFL? More importantly since this topic is about QBs...have any NIU QBs ever had success in the pros?

Only guy i can think of is Michael Turner. Havent watched too much Larry English to have an opinion but i dont think you can use the past to determine other players future success.

I was joking about Lynch btw. While i like the guy a lot, i doubt he does anything in the NFL. I would take a late round flier on him though. Depending on what he does next year, i can see him being in that 5th-6th round range.

Garrett Wolfe anyone?

I haven't seen enough of Lynch to have an opinion. I saw the NIU coach on Comcast last night saying that he should be in the Heisman race.

I am not sure if I would say Wolfe had success in the NFL. He was a reach in the draft and then stayed with Bears as long as he did because....misplaced priorities

Larry English, Doug Free, Michael Turner, Ryan Diem.

No recent QB's except for Chandler Harnish.

This probably belongs in the War Room, but what about AJ Murray? Read an article on NFL.com that was talking about how he isn't tall or fast or have the shoulder cannon you want, but is way accurate and has really good intangibles (leadership, decision-making, things of that nature). Call me crazy, but doesn't that kind of sound like a guy Trestman would be interested in?

There might of been a tad of sarcasm with the Garrett Wolfe comment. wink

I would LOVE to see the Bears draft Aaron Murray next May. He's 6'1", so it's not like he's of the Russell Wilson mold. I've watched a ton of his games over the last two seasons for Georgia and he's very accurate. He may not have Cutler-type arm strength, but he seems like he can make all of the throws still. He's also got some scrambling ability, which only helps his all-around game imho.

I also wouldn't be opposed to seeing the Bears use a 1st, 2nd or 3rd round pick on a QB, but that's a discussion for a different day.

Speaking of QB's though (now you got me ranting haha), here's some others that I wouldn't mind seeing the Bears draft:

Zach Mettenberger (LSU)...He's probably top on my QB wish list. Love his big arm and accuracy. He also proved this season, that he takes to coaching extremely well, as he's having a huge season under Cam Cameron. He's not very mobile, but he's 6'5" and can make ALL of the throws.

Tajh Boyd (Clemson)...I wouldn't be surprised to see him measure 6'0" or under when it's all said and done. He's got a very good arm and athletic ability also.

Stephen Morris (Miami)...He's had an up and down season thus far and really needs to work on his decision making and accuracy. However, if I'm looking for a 4th or 5th round developmental QB, then i'd take him.

Lynch probably isn't going to play quarterback in the NFL.  I suppose some teams will give him a shot at it, but he's probably more suited to the CFL as a qb.  In the NFL, he could possibly play fullback or maybe running back.  He would also have value as a third string, emergency qb since teams now like to carry only two qbs on the roster.
