Former coach Jimmy Johnson sent out a tweet early this morning, with one bit of known news, and one surprise.

Looks like 2 of my guys getting NFL jobs..Chud Cleveland and my QB coach at U Trestman to Chicago”

To translate from Twitter shorthand, that points to the Browns hiring Rob Chudzinski (which we knew) and CFL coach Marc Trestman getting the Bears job (which we certainly did not).

I still don't see Emery making this decision yet without talking to Dennison, Arians, and Bevall first.  Apparently he interviewed Clements yesterday.  Unless Trestman blew Emery out of the Water with his interview??

I'm sure he will be one of the finalists, but I doubt he has even met with George and Ted yet?

RE: Jimmy says is Marc Trestman

I was thinking they would lean towards Dennison. Emery did his homework, so Im guessing Trestman's background and plan appeals to him.

I wonder how many times Trestman has interviewed for a HC position in the NFL.

Jimmy Johnson also said Peyton Manning would be a Dolphin, right?

Let's hope that old hillbilly remains inaccurate, because hiring a CFL guy after dismissing a long-tenured coach who went 10-6 is, to put it lightly, a tough tough sell to the fanbase. I'll withhold any knee jerk criticism until this plays out, but this sounds really stupid.

The only retread they were interviewing was the long shot Singletarry... wasn't happening anyway. I really don't know why anyone would trust a random tweet by Jimmy Johnson of all people so much at this stage.

By all accounts Emery still has interviews scheduled over the weekend. This doesn't seem to be accurate, at least not yet.

He is the most qualified out of all of these guys....let's face it, look at his resume that includes Jake Plummer and Scott Mitchell...

RE: Jimmy says is Marc Trestman

This is surprising because as someone posted above, Emery has more interviews to do, and, according to the method he laid out at his press conference, there is supposed to be a second round of interviews including Phillips and McKaskey. And as far as we know, that hasnt happened. And I think that there enough people watching the situation that we would know if phillips and mckaskey attended a meeting with emery and trestman, or anyone else for that matter.

RE: Jimmy says is Marc Trestman

Maybe Trestman as an OC in Chicago??

Maybe Emery has already decided who his new HC is going to be, but that guy is currently in the playoffs?

I do remember reading that Trestman would be open to an OC job?

Or maybe Jimmy Johnson is full of sh*t!! I just don't see hiring Trestman as being a good move. Certainly not the type of hire that justifies firing a 10-6 HC.

Nice name-drop. Naming two out of the league, successful 15 years ago QB's and saying that makes Trestman the most qualified.

It's that approach that has bit the Bears offense in the ass, for about 9 years straight now. Why go back to the "well, he was successful 50 years ago" approach??

I will HATE this hire, if true.

RE: Jimmy says is Marc Trestman

How about how he worked with Russel Wilson grooming him at NC State? Or how he worked hands on with QBs coming up prepping for the combine/draft including Cutler/Campbell, more recently Brandon Weeden and Brock Osweiler in the draft last year. Far from ancient history there.

And were any of those names mentioned? No. Scott Mitchell and Jake Plummer were mentioned as players who made him "the most qualified."

The guy hasn't coached in the NFL for how long? I don't give a damn if he worked with Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, pre-draft...that DOES NOT make him a qualified NFL HC in my eyes.

I just don't think that this is the type of hire that is going to put the Bears over the top. Certainly not the type of hire that justifies firing Lovie Smith.

Wow dude you're not too good at reading sarcasm huh.... bearsfan247 post was tongue in cheek. If he really wanted to note trestman's qualifications via past success he probably would have listed the niners record breaking 95 season or rich gannons rise from career journeyman to nfl mvp

Lovie Smith's firing was justified once they missed the playoffs. Who they hire is irrelevant to Smith's firing.

RE: Jimmy says is Marc Trestman

The point is that hiring a guy like Trestman, who has been out of the NFL for a while now and had past success in the mid 90's and early '00's is a tough sell to a fanbase and players for that matter, who were loyal to Lovie Smith.

I was a Lovie supporter, but the last month of the season I realized it was time for him to go. I expect the best hire possible for his replacement and I do not feel that Trestman is that guy. Emery would be taking a HUGE gamble...one that the media, fans and possibly the players will not approve of.
