Emery's Draft in Review

Emery's Draft in Review
1. Shae McClellin - 2.5 sacks. 14 tackles. 0 starts 2. Alshon Jeffery - 24 Catches, 387 yards, 3 TD, 3. Brandon Hardin - ....... 4. Evan Rodriguez - TE converted to FB 5. NONE 6. Isaiah Frey -??? 7. Greg McCoy - ????
So far McClellin's numbers for a first round draft pick are lack luster but he shows promise. People's opinion that he was drafted into the incorrect system and that he is too small to be an NFL pass rusher remains firmly in question.
Ashlon Jeffery - Seems like a solid pick and a wise choice to pick up. He was injured a couple of times and the Bears WR's were riddled with injuries this year. He seems to be the only pick that seemed to hold up.
....after that people....we basically have nothing to show for our draft. Now, if you count the two third rounders for B. Marshall that's a hell of a move, so you have to give Emery credit.
That being said....your first round draft pick doesn't start a game and your second round draft pick only plays in 10 games? The rest of your entire draft doesn't even show up on your stat board?
I know everyone wants to give Emery the benefit of the doubt for now. That being said, no matter how you break it down the continually successful teams in the NFL who are regularly in the playoffs do not miss very often in rounds 1-2-3.
....let's hope Emery's draft this upcoming year in 2013 was better than 2012.

Re: Emery's Draft in Review
Fair enough. I don't want to make too much of my post relative to making decisions about how the draft panned out.
That being said when you can only discuss 2 players who start for you in the first two rounds and a trade, and you're known for being a "scout of talent" you have to wonder considering our first rounder this year was widely considered a reach.
I agree however that it is premature to ultimately make any judgements and it's more wise to wait a few years to make any true judgements.
I just hope we can have some more starters and impact players from this years 1st through 3rd round draft picks.

Re: Emery's Draft in Review
So far the draft has proven two solid contributors .
I am not exactly sure what people were expecting Shea mcClellan to do this year. He was the 19th pick.
People act like he was a top 5 draft pick.
He made a decent contribution for a pass rushing specialist. He was around the ball a lot more than the 2.5 sacks would make you believe.
And Alshon Jefferey is a very good pick so far. Just needs to stay healthy.

Shea was the worst first round pick last year and one of the worst first round picks the Bears have made in a long time.
He's a bust.

RE: Emery's Draft in Review
I am honestly think some of you don't watch the games and instead just read a stat sheet which you can't even do that right. Shea had more QB distributions then any rookie DE outside of one even though he played less since he is on a team that features a HOF DE and two quality players in and two quality other DEs. Both Dan Pompeii and Matt Bowen wrote how well be played ans his dfary slot was right where it should have been. And I guess somehow when a player breaks his hand on a freak play, the GM should have seen that coming....

He's a bust. AJ Jenkins had one pass thrown to him all year and he dropped it.

RE: Emery's Draft in Review
Nick Perry and Melvin Ingram were less productive. But you hated Shea from day 1 and always look for the opportunity to bash him. Oh and worse than Carimi or Williams? While I wish Shea would have done more, people knew this guy needed some development. He needs to put on weight and get stronger. To label him a bust after one season is bs. Like coop said, he played better than his stats suggest.
To the OP, Kiper put E-Rod on his all rookie team. At least there's that. --------------------------------------------- --- rjfrik wrote:

The Shea bashing is ridicilous. Really shows that some people are not understanding what they are watching. Maybe they were the ones that kept the Alabama-ND point spread at 10 when it should have been 14.

Re: Emery's Draft in Review
3 solid contributors. Evan Rodriguez may not have had 50 receptions and 10 TD's, but he earned a starting role in Tice's "scheme" and did a pretty good job as a lead blocker.
Would've been nice to see him get some reps at TE, but he did well at FB.

RE: Emery's Draft in Review
Evan Rodriguez looks like a pretty good full back. So you got 3 players out of that draft.
Also, I don't have the numbers now but someone tweeted out after week 15 the snaps, sacks, hurries, and hits of Jones, Mercilus, and McClellin and the only difference between the 3 was the number of snaps. Jones had almost 3 times the snaps of McClellin. If McClellin had the same snaps he would have ended up with 7.5 sacks. The worry with McClellin is the concussion issues, not his play.

I doubt if he ever will play TE in a traditional way. He really was brought to the Combine as a FB and that is why the Bears drafted him.
And I agree, he was very solid this year as a lead blocker and I think he will get more chances to catch the ball once the OL is finally fixed properly. That is part of the reason he wasn't used much in the passing game. They needed him to stay in and block on Max protect when he was in on passing plays.
I see him as becoming a more athletic version of Kuhn if he develops.

I'm glad to see he had success as a blocker, because we know he is athletic and can catch the ball, so I'm excited to see him as a bigger part of the offense next year. Maybe we'll be able to find some ways to get him involved in the passing game like Oakland does with Reece.

Re: Emery's Draft in Review
He hasn't missed yet. It's too early to say anything about this draft period. Emery isn't going to draft Tony Mandarich so don't worry about our first year players...yet.
...and FWIW I really like Jeffrey going forward.

He had almost as many QB distrubtions as Jones and Mercilus and like you said, they played a lot more. McClellin should he develop is going to be a hell of a player. Just watching him drop into coverage a bit this year was something to get exicted about it. The guy's top end speed is insane!
