Chris Mortensen @ mortreport Alex Smith will not play tonight for 49ers, unable to get clearance from neurologist after suffering concussion last week, per sources.

I don't like how this playing out...Bears have to play a sound game defensively because I know the 49's are going try to run the ball down their throat.

I never like injuries, to us (duh) or the other guys... That being said, at least this evens it up. The game is ours to lose. Here's to a hard-fought game and no new injuries to either side... and a big Bears win! BEAR DOWN!

Bears should win this game. No Alex SMith is very good news for them. Not that he is that great....but he is a lot better than Kapernick.

Re: Breaking news: Mortensen says Alex Smith won't play
It almost appears that the 49er's really did not want to go to Kapernick. They waited forever to make the decison. It appears that the Bears were very willing to go to Campbell.

Smith is not that good, but he's the guy and the offense is obviously more comfortable playing with him. If the Bears hold Gore in check and are at least competent on offense, we should come out with a W.

Not so sure guys, with your defense I would rather face Smith. The Vikings defense is a poor man's version of Chicago's and they laid the wood on the guy, Kaepernick is fast as hell and he can actually throw the football. Also, not a lot of tape on guy to study tendencies, etc. The other side, of course, being the inexperience factor of which the Bears D will test. I guess I like playing the known quantity unless it is Rodgers, Brees, Manning, or Brady.

Re: Breaking news: Mortensen says Alex Smith won't play
Smith's been practicing from what I've been hearing. If true, then they were practicing Smith thinking he would start, and there's another Bears advantage because Kapernick won't have had as many reps as Campbell.

Re: Breaking news: Mortensen says Alex Smith won't play
Have you seen what the Bears do to QB's who think they can outrun them? Ask Vick how that works out. Although will say wish we had McClellan for this one. Yeah, although that was with Urlacher prior Knee and he would always spy the QB. I am a tad bit worried about this game, hope i am wrong. As i said earlier, not sure that Smith being out is great news.

As i said earlier, not sure that Smith being out is great news. There is a lot of speed on that defense....The Bears as a whole play scrambling QB's very well. Unless Kapernick proves he can throw the ball down field...he is going to have a real problem.

Re: Breaking news: Mortensen says Alex Smith won't play
This certainly adds a double-edged twist to this game. I still think that Harbaugh will try to put the burden on Frank Gore, but may come-up with a wrinkle or two with Kaepernick that will challenge the Bears defense.
I still say that the scoring Bears defense, challenged or not, will prevail, along with a ball control offense.
This game just became less predictable and more of an opportunity for the Bears to bring their best on MNF as always.
Key to this game -- put Kaepernick and the 49ers in the position to have to pass to play catch-up and the Bears capitalize.

RE: Breaking news: Mortensen says Alex Smith won't play
For the love of me, i cannot understand the fear of this backup QB. Has anyone even noticed how well Alex Smith has been playing this season? Or how well our defense has played vs mobile QBs? Look at what they did vs Rodgers whos the best duel threat QB in the NFL.
The key to tonights game is the same as it was a week ago, the Bears offense. Defense will have them in a position to win the game. Can they make the plays to win it? My only worry on defense is the Niners screen game.
Phil Emery is watching you FAP "Steady progress in the goal of winning championships."
