I'm not really sure what the whole story is, but I can't see any motivation for why he'd do this. I'm not saying he didn't (it's pretty obvious he, at the very least, didn't help matters), but what was he hoping to gain from this?
It's not only completely disturbing, but also incredibly stupid to think that the truth wouldn't eventually come out.

Sure, but I believe this all came out before the Michigan game. At that time ND was only 3-0, and Manti wasn't even on the Heisman radar yet. I guess you could say this was to help with that, but it seems awfully early to do something as big as this hoax.
Either way, it seems completely stupid. I'm just surprised it didn't come out sooner with the way the media these days.

She never existed. There was no gf. So anytime he mentioned her it was a lie. Unless he says he was embarrassed to hsve an online relationship where he never met her I dont see hoe he gets out of it by saying he was duped. Even then he lied to his parents.
