Coppolella also promoted to Asst. GM.

Hope they both stick around for a long time.

Good.

FW is the furthest thing from this teams problems regardless of what some on here say about him.

Wren has continued to put a good team on the field with limited resources. It's not his fault that once somebody puts on a braves uniform they become and underachiever.

Before the Braves begin to reshape their roster this offseason, they reaffirmed those who would be making the decisions. The Braves have extended general manager Frank Wren’s contract through 2014, the team announced Friday morning.

Wren has been in that role for the past five seasons and in the Braves front office for 13. He was first hired as an assistant general manager in October of 1999.

The Braves also promoted two of Wren’s top assistants. Bruce Manno was promoted from assistant general manager and director of player development to vice president and assistant general manager/player development. Manno has been in the assistant general manager’s role for five seasons and began overseeing the Braves minor league system last season.

John Coppolella, who was the Braves director of professional scouting, was promoted to assistant general manager. Coppolella has been in baseball operations for the Braves for six seasons.

“These changes are a reflection of the good work and success of our Major League baseball team and the work of Frank and his senior staff,” Braves president John Schuerholz said in a press release.

The Braves promoted four other executives on their business side; including vice president of ticket sales Paul Adams, vice president of corporate partnerships Jim Allen, vice president of marketing Gus Eurton, and vice president of facility operations Eric Perestuk.

Good. Wren is one of the best in the Biz. We should keep him aroudn as long as he keeps making good deals.

Only moves he really screwed up on is KK and Lowe. You can argue Maholm was over pay but you can also argue that we may not have made the playoffs if we kept the current rotation and didn't have Reed Johnson.

KK/Lowe, sure.

BUT, our rotation at the time had Campillo, Morton, Reyes, JJ, Vaz, and Huddy coming off TJ and ???????

I cant blame him a ton for that.

Wren has done an excellent job given the situation, mainly he doesn't really have a lot of payroll flexibility.

My gripe was going out and getting 4 starters. I would have been fine with Vaz, Lowe and Glavine or Vaz KK and Glavine but we didn't need all 4, especially with Hanson and Medlen down in the minors knocking on the door.

Wren's a good GM. He's also had some uncanny luck in the sense that when he does try to do something stupid Lady Luck intervenes on his side. The Dempster for Delgado deal is the latest example. There was also the five-year deal he was willing to give AJ Burnett. Fortunately, the Yankees got him instead. Then the Peavy trade attempt which would have probably been accompanied by an ill-advised extension. Fortunately, Jake didn't want to play for us.

I thought Peavy had to do with them demanding Hanson or Heyward and Wren not willing to give them up.

You're right on Burnett and Dempster but I digress.

As I remember it, the Padres were willing to trade him for a package centered around Yunel, but Peavy wouldn't approve a deal unless Yunel stayed, so the Padres asked us to replace Yunel with either Heyward or Hanson and the trade fell apart.

That sounds about right. I remember in the end it was Hanson or Heyward plus other prospects and I wasn't for it.

He earned it.

This off season and the moves he'll make will go a long way in deciding on his next extension.

If he makes the wrong moves, signs or trades for the wrong players and our system produces nothing he wont get a next one.

Re: Francis Wren extended through 2014.....

I've been pro FW and I realize no GM gets every trade/signing right. He did get lucky with the Dempster deal as we came out better getting Maholm. We got a solid #3 ML starter with a reasonable club option who is in his pitching prime for a young future reliever coming off TJ surgery. You also have to realize Dempster was sought out by several teams thus his value sky rocketed. Texas gave up a pretty nice package for a half year rental that didn't work out.

Had Dempster came here he would not looked like he did with the Rangers. Dempster is a guy who has pitched his entire career in the NL and is more suited for the NL. He was also having a better year than any NL pitcher at the time so it's not like we or anyone else was going to get the guy without giving up some talent.

You can't really fault him on the Uggla deal either. We needed a guy who could drive in runs and be a power threat. While Uggla did knock 36 homers last year his overall numbers where down and of course we all know how it turned out this year along with limited defensive skills.

I'm very excited to see who FW add's to this team and I know he'll try his best to make sure this team puts a winner on the field.

I dont think Wren is a good GM but I do think we could do a lot worse. We cant expect a GM to be perfect. To me if he gets the team to the playoffs he has done his job. Baseball is one of those sports where its tricky when building a roster, you need to be the best marathon runner and sprinter.  Eliminate the 4th/5th starters and be able to pitch your 3 best relievers every game and the best team for playoff baseball might not even make the playoffs. The Braves have always been a team that built on depth which is great for winning divisions, not so much playoff games.

RE: Francis Wren extended through 2014.....

The biggest question with Wren is whether his scouting guys that he now has in place can keep the pipeline of talent flowing from the minors. Roy Clark did a brilliant job and deserves some of the credit for where we are today. But Wren didn't see fit to try hard to keep him and we'll have to see if the new guys we have in place all over the system are as good as the old. It's too early to tell one way or the other at this point.

If the talent in the minors dries up at all then we're toast. If we keep it flowing then it's up to Wren to add the pieces to make us competitive.

Wren's had some big time misses (Lowe, Kawakami, Tex to Angels, even Uggla). We've gotten two wild cards, no division titles, and no playoff series wins. So it's not been all sunshine and lollipops.

This is a HUGE offseason for Wren. He has a ton of money to spend, a good base of young talent, and needs to make the right moves. If we end up with another Derek Lowe that drags us down then Wren could be in hot water. If the Braves miss the playoffs next year then I think firing Wren is a possibility (not a probability as he's JS's best friend). Another wild card with an early exit will have Wren on the hot seat.

The Braves need to win a division or at least make it past the NLDS. I'm not willing to keep expectations at just having a good team.
I'm a politician which means I'm a cheat and a liar, and when I'm not kissing babies, I'm stealing their lollipops.
