Jonny Venters Good News.....I Think?

Braves: LHP Jonny Venters has been told to stop throwing following recurring soreness in his surgically repaired elbow. Venters has had two Tommy John reconstructive surgeries and was examined Wednesday by Dr. James Andrews.

The Braves have confirmed Venters is done for the season. Dr. Andrews found another torn UCL. A third TJ surgery is an option if he ever wants to pitch again. That option is highly unlikely.

Indeed, Venters first underwent Tommy John surgery back in 2005, and then he underwent it again in May of last year, hence his absence in 2014. Now, his UCL is structurally compromised once again, and it looks like another TJ or hang 'em up. Tough break indeed for the 29-year-old lefty.

Venters has been oustanding over his brief big-league career: 2.33 ERA, 175 ERA+, just nine home runs allowed in 229 2/3 innings spread across three seasons. He's limited opposing hitters to a line of .212/.317/.270. Venters is owed the balance of a $1.63-million contract for 2014.

Needless to say, rare is the pitcher who's able to pitch at the highest level after a third Tommy John surgery (Jason Isringhausen, Jose Rijo, Scott Williamson and Chad Fox are pitchers who have returned after 3 Tommy John surgeries.are some of the vanishingly rare exceptions). So Venters has the odds stacked against him moving forward.

Re: Jonny Venters

Dang. I am sorry to hear that because Venters at his best was as good as there was, and I would have liked to have seen him have a long career. Hopefully he transitions into a non-playing role and has a great life ahead of him.

Re: Jonny Venters

@mlbbowman: Venters says he plans to attempt another comeback. Thus, he will undergo a 3rd Tommy John surgery. #Braves

Venters: "Never really crossed my mind to retire, to give up and quit. If I was 38, it might be a little different. I'm only 29"

Venters says after talking to Dr Andrews and his family, that he will give it another shot and undergo a third Tommy John. “it was saddening to hear that the surgery failed and that looking at a third one is something you don’t plan for”
