Jon Lester Free Agent

Jon Lester Free Agent

There are 32.08 miles from Sharpsburg and Atlanta and 38.07 miles by car.

Sharpsburg and Atlanta are 41 mins far apart (by car).

Jon Lester said money will not be the first priority when free agency comes.

Lester signing will not be attached to losing a draft pick.

Jon Lester on upcoming free agency: 'I'm not going to the highest bidder'

Lester has two small children and lives in Sharpsburg, Ga. You would think he would want to be close to home while his kids (3 years old and 6 months old) grow up

Lester, however, insists he will not make his free agent decision based on money. Here's what he told John Tomase of the Boston Herald:

“(The Red Sox) told me, ‘We're going to be aggressive. You're going to get blown out of the water by some of these (other) offers,' ” Lester recalled. “I'm like, ‘I don't need to be blown out of the water.' Why would I need to be blown out of the water? That doesn't make or break your decision, at least for me. I'm not going to the highest bidder. I'm going to the place that makes me and my family happy. If that's Boston, it's Boston.”

“In the greater scheme of things, we're talking about just a stupid amount of money,” he said. “For me, I want to be comfortable. The way I look at it is, if someone gives you $170 million and someone gives you $150 million, is that $20 million really going to change your lifestyle? Same thing if the highest bidder is $100 million and the team you're going to feel most comfortable with offers $80 million. Is that $20 million really going to make the difference in your lifestyle?”

This would sure look good next year. Justin Upton is going to test free agency after 2015 according to most. So give Lester Uptons money. The pitching staff is young and could use a leader.

Re: Jon Lester Free Agent

Do you think Wren will let JUpton and Heyward go into FA at the same time?

You expecting Harang to come back next year?  I think he will head west and a better offer based on this year.

Me, I would sign Lester for whatever it takes if his quotes are accurate.  Try one more time to extend Heyward, move him to center, trade anyone (my preference would be with Dodgers or other quality team for a prospect OFer.  Sit BJ on the bench and have a rookie costing in essence 15.5M.  just like LaStella is filling a 13.5M spot on the roster

Re: Jon Lester Free Agent

I'm hoping Heyward stays. Peraza needs to learn LF or 3B. Wren needs to find a place for his bat. LaStella looks like the real deal at 2B. One of the Uptons will be moved somehow someway. Wren needs to make some changes in the offseason.

Players I don't think he moves are:

Peraza-Gosselin-Betancourt-Freeman-Simmons-Gattis-Heyward-LaStella-Teheran-Wood-Kimbrel-Shae Simmons-Walden-Carpenter-Minor

The rest who knows? So knowing Wren he will trade all the ones I think are safe

Re: Jon Lester Free Agent

BTW  I think Wren lives in Newnan.  Coweta County so he should get plenty of contact with Lester this winter.

KindA torn on a couple of your non-tradeables.  With this team having so many needs, its hard to hide Simmons lack of offense yet he would be worth tons on the market.  All depends if Peraza is ready and can play other positions.

Kimbrel is an expensive asset if most of the other deficiencies are not filled.  50 saves is nice but if the 50 are all your team wins its kinda overkell.  See Papelbon.  Soriano last year.

I wonder if Walden will even be offered.  Lots of down time.

Re: Jon Lester Free Agent

When you have a good closer you keep him. No reason to trade Kimbrel at this point. If the braves plan on being a playoff team over the next year or so you must keep Kimbrel.

I understand Simmons offense if lack luster but his glove is worth every penny they are paying him.

I don't see why Walden wouldn't be offered. He is still a very good setup man. Won't cost alot either. We have to have someone for the pen.

I see Venters being gone for sure and Beachy won't be back unless it like a venters deal. 1 mill or so.

Medlen will be this years floyd.

Justin, BJ and Gattis are the ones that should be moved.

I am not sure the braves will have the cash to sign Lester. They have about 79 million tired up into 8 players (plus uggla). Whats the salary for the braves 100 or 90? I would assume lester is going to want 13-15 mill a year. Giving that to a guy on the wrong side of 30 might not be the smartest thing to do.

It's all wishful thinking on my part.

Re: Jon Lester Free Agent

Skid:  The 79M you refer to does not include Santana's money which will have to be replaced somehow.  If you want a Lester type then someone else's contract will have to be shed.  Harang IMO will go back west and use this years performance for a careers final big payday.

RE:  Simmons.  As I wrote it all depends on Peraza.  Peraza can lead off and steal bases leading to runs scored.
Simmons can do neither.  Did I mention that Perazas BA is 50 points higher than Simmons OBP?  An offensive player can be hidden in an AL lineup much easier than an NL one.  In fact last nite 12 of the 15 AL teams started a SS with an OPS of less than 700.

Walden:  I expect an arb award of around 3.5M.  Getting pretty costly for a budget limited team.  Plus Simmons would appear fitting into the set up role.

Your list of tradeable players (Uptons and Gattis) by themselves solves nothing.  Unless JUp can be traded for a big corner bat you dont move him.  Moving BJ for anything doesnt help the budget issue and moving a holf million dollar Gattis is the same problem.  Trading him for prospects is not viable.

Re: Jon Lester Free Agent

The 79 mill is from the following players

Plus Uggla.

So we have around 20 mill to find 17 players. Wren is not going to be players in free agency.

Peraza is not a SS anymore. Lets get over the fact tjat he came up as one. The braves are not going to trade Simmons this offseason. They will give him more time then basicly 4 years of pro ball.

BJ just needs to go. No we are not going to get salary relief from tradinghim but he doesnt need to be on the team.

Gattis isnt a catcher and he isnt a LFer. He is not an NL player. If everyone is fne with having a crapy defensive catcher then ok keep him but he will cost you games. Also i never said anything about trading him for prospects. Gattis should atleast net you 1 above avg starting pitcher.

Jutin Upton i put down more becuase i think wren moves one of heyward/Upton. I would be happy to go with peraza LF heyward CF JUpton RF for 2015. But I could also see the.braves trade upton for a starting pitcher.

As far as walden goes 3.5 is doable. And I am not ready to hand S.Simmons the 8th inning yet. Our pen is in crappy out side of Kimbrel and Walden right now. Wonder how bad it is if BOTH are not there next you like you want it to be.

Our everyday line is only going to change in the outfield and at catcher. No where else will wren change.

Re: Jon Lester Free Agent

The main question is if Wren will be around to make those decisions.

John Hart could be the new gm for 2015.
