Trade Braves almost made

Trade Braves almost made

According to Ken Rosenthal on Fox Sports1 the Braves BJ Upton and a starting pitcher to an unidentified team almost happened at trade deadline. Braves nixed the trade because they felt they weren't getting enough value back. I'm guessing Teheran was the pitcher.

Rosenthal said Braves could revisit same trade in the offseason

Are the braves that desperate to get rid of BJ?

Re: Trade Braves almost made

For sure it would have to be either Teheran or Wood.  My guess would be Wood due to control and cost to the tradie partner.  Bet we would have to put in some money as well.  Cant see any teem willing to take on BJ and his contract without lots of incentive.

If, a big if BJ is traded, I'm curious if the line up looks similar to this for 2015. With LaStella playing like a veteran more than like a rookie he looks like 2nd base long term.

Peraza LF
La Stella 2B
Freeman 1B
JUpton RF
Heyward CF
Gattis C
Johnson 3B
Simmons SS

If we trade Teheran I'm not sure the lineup would matter. A rotation of Wood,
Minor, hamburger, hamburger helper, and scraps.

Re: Trade Braves almost made

The lineup listed above is certainly doable if BJ is traded but I would bet one of JUp or Heyward is moved regardless.  Just dont see how both quality OFers can be replaced at the same time.

Wonder if the potential trade partner was Detroit.  They traded their CFer and have Scherzer coming FA this off season and Price and Porcello next off season.  They also move Smyley who could have been replaced by Wood..

Then too, could have been Kimbrel before Simmons went down and Det got Soria.  I doubt this one.

Jonny Venters is coming along nicely 15 months after his second TJ surgery. So if all goes well he could be pitching after 16 months. I hope they hold him back until 2015

Beachy and Medlen will be back sometime next year. They had their surgeries in Mar 2014 so if they have the same setbacks as Venters did they should be ready around Aug 2015. If all goes well for them a June 2015 return is not out of the question

Re: Trade Braves almost made

Whomever it was had to have some value in order to convince another team to take on a lot of money for a seemingly dead in the water Upton.

At the same time I doubt Teheran was the pitcher.

Minor has done nothing this year at least to intrigue a ML team to gamble twice (him and Upton)

When you come right down to the nuts, Teheran, Wood and Kimbrel are the only pitchers with enough value to make this type trade.  And still Wren would have to eat a great deal of BJ's contract.

I heard this report today and Rosenthal thinks it could have been B.J. Upton and Santana oe Minor that would have been traded.

Whether is was Wood, Harang, Minor, Santana or Teheran Wren got cold feet and terminated the possible deal.

Re: Trade Braves almost made

the braves would have nothing for next year or the near future for the rotation if they traded wood or teheran. Makes no sense to trade either of them.

Wren already has to find atleast 2 quality starting pitchers next year. No need to trade our de facto ace and our best young arm just for the heck of it.

I'm disappointed he didn't get out from under that awful contract. I'm not sure I can survive 3 more years of BJ

Re: Trade Braves almost made

Couple things to consider re; this subject.

Hursh is knocking on the door.  Santana had no value at the deadline to any of the contenders if they would have to eat lots of  BJ's money.

Minor is getting a bit expensive thru arbitration.

Beach and Medlen will be back early in 2015.

Dont sleep on Hale as a #5 unless you are expecting Cy Young reincarnate out of the 5 hole.

IMO  Wren will go after a Lester type ace this winter if he can free up some of Uggla/BJ money.

2017 they will try for a big splash.  All teams do when going into a new stadium.

Re: Trade Braves almost made

Hursh has had a total of 158 professional innings. To think he can come up and be anything more the a 5 is wishfull thinking.

Minor should go. Sucks that he has zero value with the year he has had.

Beachy will never pitch for the braves again. And if he does it will be out of the pen. Medlen will be this year Gavin Floyd for 2015. But we can't count on him to be a anything more then a 4.

Santana had a good bit of Value at the deadline. If they were trying to move him with BJ yes that would be an issue but he still have good value.

Hale as a 5 ok but we have to have more then all 5's in a rotation.

This is why trading Teheran or Wood would have been disastrous to the rotation for the next 4 years.

Right now going into next year our rotation is this.

Teheran
Wood
Minor
Hale

Then Who?

Wren has some work to do.

Re: Trade Braves almost made

This winter there will be a horde of FA pitchers.  A lot will depend on money obviously.

Wood, BTW only had 114 innings in the minors if you want a comparison.

Rosenthat wrote that the Braves could revisit the same trade in the offseason so that would take Santana out of the picture.

Re: Trade Braves almost made

I get that with Wood. If Harsh would come up I don't think we can count on anything more then a 5th and even then the braves are going to want to limit his innings.

I said it was Minor and BJ. I could see a team wanting them. Some thinnk they can fix Minor and if the braves are paying a lot of the money on the BJ deal it wouldn't be that bad. I would guess an AL club was the one that asked.

Re: Trade Braves almost made

After agonizing through 5 BJ Upton ABs last night/today he needs to go. Addition by subtraction is necessary. The 2014 version of the Braves are not going to the playoffs. This version is not a .500 ball club. It is time for the Front Office to act. Give up this illusion that this team can make the playoffs. Do the organization and the fans a favor and move BJ off this roster and get rid of that contract that is crippling any future moves. Please see this team for what it is.

Start getting ready for 2015 and the move towards the new stadium. The first step was to remove Uggla. The next step is to remove BJ. If a popular and talented player needs to be added to a trade to facilitate that trade then that sac rice has to be made. The rumor of BJ and a starting pitcher trade has been making the rounds on the internet. That pitcher can be replaced. Pitchers are always replaced. In another thread skidlee listed pitchers. It's not like they don't exist.

Wren please make that trade. Payroll and roster relief is what this team needs. This ship is sinking and the playoffs are slipping farther and farther away. Jettison BJ now so we don't have to endure this again in 2015, 2016, and 2017
