Fox Sports South stat about last 26 games

Ok, so the Braves are 17-9 in their last 26 games. That's correct.

However, go back three games and in their last 29 games they are 17-12. The bad part about that is only three of those 29 games have been against teams with a winning record.

So let's not get crazy over Atlanta's success over the last few weeks.

How will they do in that home stand in August, when they host the Nationals, Dodgers and A's? We'll probably know then how good this team may be for the stretch drive.

Re: Fox Sports South stat about last 26 games

My honest opinion on this is that they are playing over their heads even against the lesser teams. When you look at their staff and the things the team has been through, add in losing our starting catcher for a big part of the year, and the lack of anyone really stepping up their game, this could be a much different story, record-wise.

If I had to guess I'd say that this is a high 80's-win team that just barely misses the post-season, but all in all I don't think that's that bad. Then again I have low expectations.

A lot depends on which NL teams make a splash at the trade deadline.

I dont think there is a whole lot Wren can do with the limitations placed on him dollar wise.

And IMO this team can well make the playoffs but I do not see them as a WS player.  I do not subscribe to the theory that anyone can get lucky.  Talent prevails.

Re: Fox Sports South stat about last 26 games

I'm going to begin with the offense. The team play was maddening at times with the personnel on the roster.....but they managed to stay at the top of the division in spite of sub-par performances.

Why I think the team will be better after the break:

BJ has been a better BJ since moving to leadoff and while he is not setting the baseball world on fire he is getting on base and scoring runs.

Simmons is coming around in the two hole. Look for more contributions in 2nd half from him

Freddie will be Freddie all season

Gattis big bat

Heyward is finally where he should be. He is in a run producing spot where he will bring more production than what was there before

Upton is Upton

Johnson has looked better lately and should be more relaxed hitting near the back of lineup

LaStella is producing and Uggla is not killing rallies.

Wood is going to be big in rotation. If a Minor get return to 2013 form it will be huge. Bullpen is deeper with Simmons and Shreve. Carpenter is a huge piece.

September call ups could play large role.

Peraza for his speed as a stolen base threat

Gosselin Cunningham

Bethancourt for defense

Jamie as bullpen depth

If Venters comes around to his former self it will be humongous....not counting on it. If it happens the bullpen becomes hideous. Jamie could be key down the stretch.

I see 10 extra wins that would have been losses with the new and improved roster and the additional roster in September

Individually I cant argue with you.

Looks to me like Simmons is headed back to the grip and rip mode.
Freddie is getting pitched around.
Where will Fredi bat Gattis withour bruising egos.
Bench will continue to struggle and be a killing factor next month.  Got to find a 4th OFer with some ability and please not Constanza again.
Hope Harang can keep his magic twanger working.  Minor MUST get it going.

Re: Fox Sports South stat about last 26 games

Minor needs to get it together is absolutely key. Carpenter is so very close to being replaced by Jaime. The issue the Braves have with Carpenter is he is out of options. It may be wise to start Gattis off slow in the 6 hole and leave Upton at 4. Doumit is not the answer for the bench. We can remove the catcher tag from him. He is not a catcher nor is he a defensive OF'er.

A lefty reliever and some offense off the bench will help.

Re: Fox Sports South stat about last 26 games

Braves are 16-7 with .260 batting average, 3.20 ERA and 109 runs scored in their past 23 games. If they can maintain that winning Pct. They will have no trouble winning the division.

Currently the team is 54-44 with 64 games to go. Using the current playing Pct. they are on course for 32-14 that will bring their record to 86-58 with 18 games to play. 95 wins should take the division so there is wriggle room to reach 95

Better play from BJ and LaStella are just a couple of reasons for the 16-7 record. Very poor play from BJ and Uggla held the team back.

Braves are 15-6 with B.J. Upton batting leadoff. He's hit safely in 18-of-21 games, batting .250/.298/.375 with 15 R and 6 RBI. The 15-6 record with BJ leading off also has a lot to do with Heyward hitting 5th and the play of LaStella.
