David Price is needed

David Price is needed

The solution?
David Price.

That’s right, a starting pitcher. The best available starting pitcher. If the Team can’t enhance their run production, they might as well upgrade their run prevention. The idea is to outscore your opponent, any way you can.

The cost of all this, of course, would be prospects. Precious prospects. Previously untouchable prospects. You know, the kind that Athletics general manager Billy Beane had no problem trading for right-handers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel while sitting on the best record in the majors and best rotation ERA in the AL.

Just read Ken Rosenthal article which I agree with. Wren should target David Price as a run preventer since he is not going to upgrade the Braves schizophrenic offense. It's no secret the Braves can fail miserably at scoring runs so it makes sense to keep the other team from scoring. Enter David Price. Mike Minor is stinking it up and not doing his part.

Price is under control for this year and all of next year. Yes, he will be expensive next year, but the upside to that is making a qualifying offer after the 2015 season to get a first round draft pick when he turns the offer down. That will give the Braves 2 first round picks in 2016 to replace the prospects needed to acquire Price.

It's going to be tough to get past the Dodgers and on into much deeper post season aspirations with the 2014 versions of Kershaw, Greinke and company with the pitchers the Braves have currently. Wren does need to beef up the starters in spite of him saying the rotation is fine.

Braves needs:
Ace
Shutdown bullpen lefty
Pop and on base bench help

Anything less than that and it is obvious Wren is playing for the future and not for this years World Series. Spend your prospects that are blocked by these long term contracts you have been shelling out. Spend those prospects for help this year.

Re: David Price is needed

Agree with your premise as to needs and Price can probably be fit into the 2015 payroll.  But:  what will it take to get him prospect wise and do we have enough of those going forward?

If Lester goes FA would you roll the dice on being able to sign him rather than trading the farm for Price?

Re: David Price is needed

Both Lester and Price will go Free Agent. The bidding will skyrocket for both.

Lester will go Free Agent after the World Series 2014

Price will go Free Agent after the World Series 2015

Both should be way way out of Braves budget plans.

Both will yield a First Round draft pick after they refuse qualifying offer if either ends up with Braves. Lester would be more attractive because his draft pick return would be a year sooner and Boston is playing horrible baseball so the pick should end up around 7-10 in 1st round, unless Boston gets hot.

Re: David Price is needed

If Braves want to play viable baseball in the new stadium they will have to find ways to meet payroll for elite players.

Believing that I think I would prefer going after Lester and the certainty that a FA contract would give me rather than trading the farm for Price and the unforeseen.

Bottom of the first round draft picks are nice but really not a whole lot more than wishful thinking.  The international draft provides more realistic picks IMO.

Re: David Price is needed

If Wren does trade for 2 free agent to be pitchers with the idea of them helping this year on the field, but also yielding a first round draft pick next year............Ervin Santana signed late in spring with Atlanta, so he again can be offered the qualifying offer.

That would be 3 first round picks if they decline the qualifying offer. The Braves would also receive one to bring the total to 4 first round picks in next years draft.

Since Price looks unattainable maybe Wren can swing a deal for these two. He could trade the top prospects, for these two pitchers, that are blocked at positions played by all the extensions signed this year
Jon Lester
Andrew Miller

Next years rotation would be headlined by
Teheran
Wood
Minor
Hale

So I'm dreaming a bit that the Braves prospects that are blocked would be in demand by the Red Sox?

First round picks don't always pan out. The slot money for multiple 1st rd picks would be heavy.

I just don't see Atlanta being able to offer what some others will for Price or any top level player.

I don't know what TB would want. Not familiar with their system to know their needs. If Wren truly wanted Price he could get him by blowing TB away. I hope Wren doesn't try to blow TB away.

Minor or Wood
Bethancourt or Gattis
LaStella or Peraza
Shae Simmons or Jamie
Hursh or Sims

Who would Wren move off the roster to get a bat? At which position could he upgrade a bat that is already there?

Just saw this on twitter

@MLBNetworkRadio: Kansas City Manager Ned Yost on adding another bat: "It would always help I think, there's just not a lot of bats out there really."

Well, obviously the place to make the change (or to just add depth), is the outfield, but I understand exactly what you are saying. The Braves need a leadoff hitter something fierce, but they also need some more power.

Re: David Price is needed

Agree. Minor is horrible...offensively, as freeman goes, the braves go. And he's slumping....BAD. DONT understand moving Simmons and LaStella when that batting order was working. Also, Doumit, Schafer, and Pena have all been bench disappointment s

This team needs a miracle.

Honestly id fire Fredi and shake things up. Trade Gattis and get whoever to take BJ Too. This team is just bad.

Re: David Price is needed

Giants just traded for Jake Peavy and gave up two minor league pitchers. Red Sox will obtain their #2 prospect LHP Edwin Escobar and their #11 prospect RHP Heath Hembree from Giants for Jake Peavy. The Giants and Red Sox are splitting remainder of Jake Peavy's salary for this year (about $5 million total; $2.5 million on each team).

IF the Red Sox got a #2 and a #11 for Peavy.......then the Braves are not getting starting pitching. If the Braves wanted a starter it would need to be an Ace. Peavy was a 3-4 and that price was high. I'd guess an Ace would cost Sims, Hursh, Peraza and JR Graham. Just a guess. That's too much. And that is just me guessing.
