Venters

Posted: 3/26/2013 2:59 PM

Venters

Removed in the middle of the sixth inning after giving up a homer, triple, walk plus the obligatory wild pitch (no Gattis was not catching).

Doesn't seem ready.

Would be wise to let him recover on the DL for a bit.  That helped him last year.

Mark Bowman ‏@mlbbowman 9m

Venters said his arm was fine when the Braves gave him an extended break last week. But it now looks like something isn't right

RE: Venters

DOB said he was pulled after Fredi saw something he didn't like.  Can't help but to be a little concerned.

Re: Venters

Per Bowman and DOB, Venters left because of an elbow sprain

RE: Venters

Even without Venters our pen looks strong. Kimbrel and EOF would handle the 9th and 8th. My guess is Walden takes over in the 7th. Avilan, Gearrin and Varvaro are the middle relief guys. Martinez the long guy.

The balance still looks fine. Two lefties: EOF and Avilan. Two righties with reverse splits: Walden and Martinez. And two guys you should use mainly against righties: Gearrin and Varvaro.

As long as Walden and EOF are healthy. If not, then we may be looking at bringing up a Graham or Obispo.

LOL Our pitchers have had an awful week so now our pitching sucks and we're going to have to out slug everyone to win ballgames.

NO, its that the Braves don't have very good (or deep) pitching and it's been talked about since the beginning of the offseason.

Luckily, the offense should be pretty special.

RE: Venters

BP has the Braves starting 5 as starting 139 games with the following ERAs:

3.64
3.15
3.84
4.28
4.60

Thats not terrible by any means at all. Part of the problem is the only depth is Beachy, who is returning from injury.

Another thing is bullpen volatility. Last year, the pen had an ERA around 2.75. Yes, I know they added Walden, but that type of stuff isn't sustainable from year to year. Bullpen performance jumps year to year and even though it looks good on paper, we could easily see a big dropoff from last year.

The defense has been downgraded with the loss of Bourn. (somewhat lessed by the addition of Simmons for an entire year). Probably not going to see a positive fielding rating from Uggla. 3B will likely be a dip. J Up is a good defender, but he's not gonna save the amount of runs Prado did last year.

Mess- maybe not. Strength-certainly not. THis team is going to have to win by scoring a lot of runs. This team will give up more than 50 runs more than it did last year.

Is Teheran the 4.60?

139 out of the current five would be great (most since 2009).  Of course, innings matters even more, especially considering how fragile the bullpen appears to be.

His injury doesn't sound good!
Hope there is no more damage on his elbow (no TJ surgery) and he will be back in 4 weeks!

RE: Venters

Per DOB:

In the final days of spring training, seeing reliever Jonny Venters looking at his left elbow before being pulled from Tuesday’s game against Detroit put a damper on things for the Braves.

Venters was diagnosed with a sprained elbow and will presumably open the season on the disabled list. Pitching in a major league game for the first time in 13 days, he faced five batters in the sixth inning and gave up a leadoff homer, a walk and a triple before leaving after throwing a wild pitch to the fifth batter, letting in the third run of the inning.

Re: Venters

Venters shouldn't pitch until he can go 1-2-3 vs some minor leaguers.  He might just be done.  He can sue the manager for 2 years ago.  Also shows you why you shouldn't be in a hurry to lock up relievers, even Kimbrel.

Why can't Martinez be pitching depth?  I don't see how he isn't a league avg starter.  If we need a starter for a couple of starts I think he could do it.  Better than a lot of what we had last year.

He could be.  But if they decided to go that route he would have to go down to AAA to get stretched out.  A bit tricky with a guy who is out of options.
