Good for Mike.

I'm really glad he chose Cleveland.

4/48 kinda makes you rethink 5/75 for BJ

Not really
Bourn wouldn't have made them contenders
The mutts will be irrelevant for a while

Thats a good deal for the Indians and Bourn. Their pick is protected and they make their lineup much much better. If only they had a pitching staff...

Glad he landed in the junior circuit instead of the NL East

Bourn has to be dissapointed. He is only getting 12 million dollars, that's 1.5 million less than he would have had he accepted the Braves qualifying offer. He thought he was a 15 million dollar a year player and he was wrong. Boras doesn't wiff much but he did with this deal.

I guess the baseball GM's don't visit Fangraphs, or they would have learned how much of a superstar Michael Bourn is.
nyuk, nyuk.

Meh, that's the way it went.

The Braves, Nats, and Phils all got CF'ers early on who were rumored to get Bourn.

Giants kept Pagan.

It was pretty much down to the Mets, or someone else, Boras got the best deal he could. Not what he was looking for, but not exactly chump change.

Indians have a pretty decent lineup, pitching OTOH....

Re: Michael Bourn is a Cleveland Indian

So which is better:

BJ Upton at $15MM/year and pick 31
or
M Bourn at $12MM/year and pick 26

I'm happy the way things turned out, because getting Upton is better in my opinion and it also allowed us to get Justin Upton.

RE: Michael Bourn is a Cleveland Indian

I don't know if anyone realizes it but Cleveland is suddenly a contender for a wild card spot considering they play with the Twins, Royals, and the White Sox could also potentially struggle due to the age there

LINEUP
Bourn
Kipnis-Look what he did before second half slump
Asdrubal-One of the best SS in the game
Swisher-Could hit 30 homers
Santana-Likely to rebound from a down 2012
Reynolds-Big time power
Chisenhall-Has shown flashes, former top prospect
Brantley-Defense and speed
McGuiness-Power potential

Stubbs-Defense, power, and speed and will likely share regular time
Aviles-Very good utility type
Giambi-Nice power bat off the bench

Ubaldo
Masterson
B.Myers
Bauer
1 OF McAllister, Daisuke, Carrasco

Very solid pen with
Perez
Joe Smith
Pestano
Albers
Capps
Hagadone
Huff
To hell with Georgia

Without B.J, we probably don't push for Justin as hard. Win/win. I'm glad Bourn picked somewhere I could root for him...I don't see Cleveland being a threat.

Me too. However, I would rather have Bourn than BJ Upton in centerfield.

Good deal for Cleveland. I'm glad he chose them over the Mets even though I don't like either team.
Zito on Simmons (2/24/12):  if Simmons can be as good as Alexei that would shock me. If we could get Alexei and Lilli for Beachy and get cash I would do it. Being "arguably the best defensive SS in the minors" means nothing...

Without bj we probably don't get J Up. So still a win for us. Plus we get Bj for his prime years.

Bourn is the easy choice, thanks to the better defense (not even close here IMO), money saved and better draft pick.

PS: The Braves will end up with the 32nd pick (once Lohse signs).

This article says that they lose their 3rd pick and the number 69 pick??? Is that right?

Easy to second guess.  But Boras' bargaining style would have meant our taking a big chance.  You can't count on getting the last player on your list.  Better to overpay some on someone who will sign earlier.
