Key departures: UT Jeff Baker and RHP Miguel Batista Yes. They will be sorely missed.

Re: Braves Winter Report card from SI
From the article:
While there isn’t much on the free agent market, one option that might be worth exploring would be to bring in Scott Rolen. The 37-year-old hit just .245/.318/.398 with eight homers in 330 PA for the Reds, and has played in just 157 games over the past two years due to injuries. He’s in no shape to play every day, but spotted judiciously, he could provide better defense and perhaps better offense than either of the aforementioned candidates. The Braves would have to ward off the Dodgers and Reds, both of whom have expressed interest in him recently.
Would we be interested in Rolen? He would give us an extra bat off the bench and solid glove work when healthy, plus serve as a mentor to Francisco and/or Johnson. I don't see us tying up a roster spot for him, but might he be worth a look?
Work hard. Nap hard. That's what I always say, Jack!

Re: Braves Winter Report card from SI
I thought about it but I am thinking he would want too much money for what we want to spend. He is not a drifter utility man but former all-star and he will be asking more than those drifters, maybe to the tune of 4 mil plus. mcollier wrote: From the article:

To be the man, you have to beat the man and so far I am undefeated.

Re: Braves Winter Report card from SI
If the braves got a B for acquiring BJ and Justin Upton and Jordan Walden for Tommy Hanson, who got an A?
If we signed Scott Rolen would we get an A?

Re: Braves Winter Report card from SI
I thought about Rolen too till I read how much he's asking for. He apparently wants about what he made last season (6 mil or so). This is also why the Reds reportedly are unlikely to be signing him.
We certainly won't be spending 6 million to sign Rolen.
Zito on Simmons (2/24/12): if Simmons can be as good as Alexei that would shock me. If we could get Alexei and Lilli for Beachy and get cash I would do it. Being "arguably the best defensive SS in the minors" means nothing...

Re: Braves Winter Report card from SI
I'd offer 3-4 million to Rolen as a part time player.

I wouldn't mind Rolen for the right price.

Interesting that the Braves got a B for their offseason work.

Re: Braves Winter Report card from SI
He seems to base that grade strictly due to us having a mediocre bench. Seems harsh for something that could probably be fixed rather easily at some point in the future.
I personally would give Wren an 'A'. I thought he did as well as we could have hoped at our two most glaring needs and most difficult open roster spots to fill... CF and a RH power bat.
The bench is something that he should be able to upgrade pretty easily with plenty of money available. And that money available is another reason to give Wren an 'A' by the way.

RE: Braves Winter Report card from SI
A B? Lol we always get hated on it seems. Wren gets an A and I don't see how he gets anything lower. Weso pointed out the reasoning already.

RE: Braves Winter Report card from SI
We got a B because who knows what we get out of the Uptons. On potential it's an A+ but we in theory aren't any better than last year if the Uptons (mainly Justin) don't play to their ability. BJ we more or less know what we'll get (low average lots of walks and high power)

Re: Braves Winter Report card from SI
Rolen makes no sense. Chris Johnson is much better at this point and I would much rather give Francsico a chance. If we didn't have CJ to split time with Francisco then it would make sense but not now.

Re: Braves Winter Report card from SI
A lot of offseason grading is including us losing Chipper. There's nothing you can do about that.

Re: Braves Winter Report card from SI
They don't even have Prado in our key departures. If Martin were to hit like he did in 2011 and we replaced him with Justin Upton's floor, which was last year, then we got significantly better. You can play that game all day. Fact is, potential wise, we got a whole lot better. It's not even close. We have two potential, legitimate MVP candidates on our team that are under 26. Very few teams can say that.

accqusition of Chris Johnson with a 2.75 mil major league salary menas we aren't bidding for Rolen. Not at the #'s being quoted anyway.
