Re: Prado Signs Extension with D'Backs
$40M over 4 years. It was reported he wanted around $12M/year, but he agreed to $10/year with the D'Backs. Strange. He is well worth that money.

Couldn't we have afforded to pay him that and get/keep JUp?

Re: Prado Signs Extension with D'Backs
They may be giving him $3M or so more than he'd have gotten in arby this year in exchange for a little less the next 3 years. But I'm a little surprised at that figure. Gotta think the Braves would've been willing to go that high.

Re: Prado Signs Extension with D'Backs
Well, he would have made $7 million this season, so its an extension of $11 million per season. Not to say that I wouldn't have been in favor of the Braves paying Prado that contract, but it appears the Braves may have decided to try to resign McCann over Prado.

McCann already isn't aging well.

Chances are I'd personally be ok with doing that if it means we keep Prado. Also I choose Prado over Mac 1000 out of 1000 times. That's not even close.

I don't believe Mac is going to be here either way. I think Wren made the best trade possible. Have to hope we have some guys step up like Juan/Johnson/Gattis/bethancourt.

dansnotcool wrote: Couldn't we have afforded to pay him that and get/keep JUp? Nope, unless you wanted to include Simmons in the deal. FW said in the Shanks interview that the deal had to have Prado in it once Simmons was off the table. I probably would of gave him 4/40 but we probably don't have JUp, soooooooooooo.........

Re: Prado Signs Extension with D'Backs
I try to be a fan and supporter of the braves, but the ownership makes it almost unbearable. Prado should have been resigned for that contract. They won't sign McCann, and that I prob agree with....but Prado for 4/40 was doable.
They will now tell us it's to sign Heyward, FF and medlen....I don't however trust liberty whatsoever

RE: Prado Signs Extension with D'Backs
Still happy wit the deal but you know how these things go. You never know for a few years. I like having a 24 year old potential superstar. I'll take my chances. Under the radar is Chris Johnson.

Re: Prado Signs Extension with D'Backs
I'm a huge Prado fan. Does everything the right way. So what I'm about to type may show that I was raised on 1980s baseball (your #2 gives himself up to get the leadoff guy to 3b with one out after the leadoff hitter steals second). Spending more than 1/10th of total payroll on Prado was not feasible for this club. He is not a 3/4/5 hitter. If you are a team with limited payroll, you better not be handing out long term $10 million + contracts to anyone that doesn't fit a 3/4/5 role. Spending $10 million a year on an ideal two hole hitter that doesn't play a premium defensive position is a mistake. Maybe Arizona views him in their 3 hole. He could be very good there, but he wasn't going to be the 3 in Atlanta where Heyward, Upton and Freeman could all lay better claim to it.
I tend to think that McCann's days in Atlanta are numbered. There isn't enough money in the budget to sign McCann long term and give the young guys the raises they need... unless Uggla is moved (if he rebounds this year, it could happen, but I think it is unlikely). The Braves have the luxury of putting Gattis in AAA and Bethancourt in AA and giving McCann a qualifying offer at the end of this year. If he elects to come back, fine. If not, one of those kids will need to step up.

I have zero faith Juan or Johnson will be able to replicate what Prado has done for us. Bethancourt has a .00001% chance of ever becoming even an OK hitter. Gattis I'm a little more optimistic on but he's still a 26 yr old prospect.

Kelly Johnson is Utley-lite.

Probably depends how Bethancourt develops this year though, and if Gattis can stick at C as well with our OF set for the next 3 years at least.

Kelly Johnson? Utley-like IMO.
