John Sickels farm system rankings.
www.minorleagueball.com/2013/1...system-rankings27) Atlanta Braves (8): System thinned out very quickly due to graduations, trades, injuries. Strengths: There is still good depth in pitching, though the highest ceiling arm (Julio Teheran) is enigmatic. Weaknesses: hitting. Tools players like Christian Bethancourt and Edward Salcedo are developing poorly with the bat.

So, did the loss of Drury, Ahmed and Spruill cause us to drop to 27? I doubt it. If there is a time for us to be thin on the farm it is now.

RE: John Sickels farm system rankings.
As long as we have ample pitching, the big club should be able to trade for what we need.
Still have a few position players left - Gattis, La Stella, Cunningham, Constanza, Beckwith, Peraza, Mejia, Elander, Hefflinger, Salcedo, Bethancourt, Terdoslavich, Kennelly. Somebody in this group can play.

Re: John Sickels farm system rankings.
Sickels doesn't like our players. Just look at his write ups. In fact I would say that he kind of hates all our players.
To be fair we did graduate a ton of players in the last three years.
We have done exactly what a farm system should do... stack the big league team.

Re: John Sickels farm system rankings.
Sims, Wood, Graham, and Gilmartin are a very good group of arms. A nice influx of young hitting talent is needed. Hoping to see us take a hitter in the first three rounds in June.

It's always good to have hitters on the farm and we definitely need some, but all the young hitting we have on the big squad makes it not so terrible.

Re: John Sickels farm system rankings.
While I agree that its not a pressing need, we do need to rebuild the farm these next two years with some hitters. The Braves are going to develop the pitchers. This years draft is deep in left handed HS arms and prep catchers. Its shallow in college bats. dansnotcool wrote:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this also includes losing Vizcaino and Delgado plus graduating Simmons to the bigs. Sickels probably dropped us a bit too much, but I think a significant drop was warranted. The good news is that we should have plenty of time to rebuild the farm and we still have a few prospects to deal if necessary.

RE: John Sickels farm system rankings.
Yeah if we were struggling in the MLB team it would b bad but our team is pretty set so our farm isnt a big deal right now. I would like to see a high school bat taken n the first.

RE: John Sickels farm system rankings.
What I'd like to see is the Braves using some of their available funds to sign some good, high upside international FAs... we could quickly re-stock the system doing so (and I'm fully aware that we will not be able to compete with the likes of the Dodgers who seem to be willing to throw obscene amounts of money at anything...)

Re: John Sickels farm system rankings.
Id rather be in the braves situation than the padres, who have one of the best farms in tge league.
With the youth of our big league club we have time to build the system back up. Plus a lot of our yalent is in a ball or lower so if they progress it will improve our rankings. Im not worried with the way we coach up prospects.

RE: John Sickels farm system rankings.
I'd agree with the rankings. The Braves do not have a strong farm right now but I believe that will change within a year. There are a lot of good player in the lower levels that just need more expereience. Braves need to hit with their first pick though this year. Need a high ceiling hitter in the system.

RE: John Sickels farm system rankings.
The farm is there strictly to make the major league club better, nothing else. Looking at our team right now, I'd say its done its job. Time for the guys in charge of making the farm better to build up the assets again.

Re: John Sickels farm system rankings.
Our farm system is most definitely weak right now, but if there was ever a time to have a weak farm, it is now. We are primarily stacked with young, controllable talent on the big league roster, and that has been a result of graduation, trades, and philosophy. We have not shied away from giving up top picks to sign vets such as we just did for BJ Upton, or like we did when we signed Glavine. We have been more than willing to trade away top talent to upgrade the roster. And we've taken the tilt of drafting with the emphasis on signability and safety.
However, I think, or at least hope, this last trade for Justin Upton may have signaled a real change from that philosophy. Instead of including the last few high upside guys we have left in our farm like Teheran, Graham, Wood, Sims or Bethancourt, we included Prado who we were going to lose soon anyway. By doing that, it kept those guys in our system, and allowed us to trade lesser talent.
I'm really looking to the draft this year along with the international draft to see if we shift our focus from the safe, signable guys to more of the higher risk, higher ceiling talent. We also need to refrain from signing anybody else for the next couple years that would cost us a top draft pick. I think our farm system, which we will need again in two to three years, is in real need of that change.

Our farm system is as weak as its been in a while. We've got some good pieces but we don't have an embarrassment of riches anymore. We've not done great in recent drafts and international signings.

There isn't much to like, and it gets especially bad once Teheran makes the permanent leap to the bigs. Twilo73 wrote:Sickels doesn't like our players. Just look at his write ups. In fact I would say that he kind of hates all our players.

Re: John Sickels farm system rankings.
Sanchez and Black could emerge as good players at the lower level this year. Sanchez was a top 50 talent that we drafted in like the 17th round. I want to say injury is why he fell and we were able to sign him.

Braves have drafted the following in the last three years: Simmons Cunningham Gattis Drury Gilmartin Ahmed Graham Martin Sims Wood Not anything crazy but its going to take another year or two to see where this farm is. The problem at the upper levels is really because Liberty starting cutting the purse strings and Clarks last two drafts weren't great. We got Minor/Kimbrel out of those drafts but that doesn't help our farm now. I think Demacio had done a good job of drafting the last three years. The international signings are still in the lower minors and obviously Salcedo has not been what we thought.
