Projected Lineup & Bench Spots
So who will fill out our bench now that this trade is completed?
1 spot goes to Francisco or Johnson, whomever is not starting at 3B
1 spot goes to Laird when McCann is healthy
1 spot to Reed Johnson
1 spot to a backup middle infielder, either Janish or Pastornicky as of now?
I guess that leaves 1 more roster spot between Gattis, Schaffer, Constanza, or maybe we go get a free agent with the money we have left?
If McCann is healthy, I'd like to see Gattis start in AAA to play every day.

Re: Bench Spots
Yeah, I agree about hoping that Gattis goes to AAA to get everyday at bats. I hope they give him a chance to prove that he can play a serviceable catcher.

RE: Bench Spots
It's gotta be Schafer unless we dump him in another trade.

Janish and Pastornicky won't make the roster, they both have options. Ramiro Pena will get the utility spot because he has no options and is a switch hitter.

Re: Bench Spots
I think last spot should be a left handed pinch hitter type.
1-Laird 2-Francisco or Chris Johnson 3-Janish or Pastornicky 4-Reed Johnson 5-Left handed pinch hitter

Re: Bench Spots
Good point. Pena will likely beat out both of them.
The Janish signing seems rather... strange... at this point looking back on giving him a guaranteed deal.

1-Laird 2-Francisco or Chris Johnson 3-Janish or Pastornicky 4-Reed Johnson 5-Left handed pinch hitter I agree. I'm not really sure why people want Schafer or Georgie on the bench, their only value is to play CF adequately short term and we don't need that.

1-Laird 2-Francisco or Chris Johnson 3-Janish or Pastornicky 4-Reed Johnson 5-Left handed pinch hitter 5 - Which would be either Schafer or Constanza. Neither belongs in AAA. Constanza might have more trade value at this point if both perform accordingly in the spring. 3 - Should be Janish with Pastornicky getting a chance to play every day at whichever position the Braves need him (I say 2B).

RE: Bench Spots
I think long term (aka after this year) Gattis fits the masher role off the bench as far as this year, some interesting names in FA.
Bobby Abreu - Can't start anymore but maybe he can hit coming off the bench? Jason Giambi - I imagine he'll retire but he was a serviable PH for Colorado. Orlando Hudson - My choice, could push Francisco for a starting spot, could be a good utility guy from the bench, coming off a putrid bad season but he still has some skills. Aubrey Huff - Fits the LH need, not sure of his health situation right now though. Brandon Inge - a personal bench favorite of mine, can play 3B LF or in a pinch, C. Would be a good guy to have for depth but not much of a hitter. Kelly Johnson - Coming off a big down year of course, but gives some depth at 2B, can certainly play LF and probably can play 3B in a pinch, I loved KJ but I'm wondering if he's just not aging well, would take a low cost flyer on him though. Austin Kearns - Probably best hitter of all the available guys, is still kinda young, but he's a righty, which we already have covered with Johnson. Casey Kotchman - We know he can't hit as a starter, maybe he'd be better as a PH? Wouldn't bet on it, only postiive value I can see him bringing is maybe he can teach Freeman how to field better. Carlos Lee - Coming off a bad year, but before that still hit so maybe he could mash off the bench, he is a righty though but I think just signing the best hitter is the right choice. Juan Rivera - Coming off some down years but who knows how he'd be as a bench player.
Anyway ther eare some intriguing opportunities in FA.

Re: Bench Spots
I like the fact that Chris Johnson can slide over to 1B and Francisco to 3B when Freddie needs a break. So assuming Johnson starts, what's our bench like when Mccann is back?
Laird - C Francisco 3B Pena - Util R. Johnson - OF Final spot to Gattis, Schafer, Constanza?

RE: Bench Spots
Trade for Bonafacio. He could leadoff some games and play 2B if Uggla struggles again this year. Then also have Gattis in there as well.
Bonafacio - utility Laird-backup C Gattis-RH power bat Francisco-LH power bat RJohnson-backup OF, kills LHP as well
Thats the way I would go. Something along the lines of acquiring a guy like Bonafacio, who could leadoff if need be, and play infield.

RE: Bench Spots
I wouldn't be surprised to see Wren go after Bonifacio, but I really wouldn't give up too much for him other than spare parts.

RE: Bench Spots
Yeah it depends on the price of course. I highly doubt Wren stops here. He has more money to play with still. Whether he uses it now or midseason, he will improve the bench.

RE: Bench Spots
Good points. However id like to shop him to an AL team to at least see what the return would be. A B prospect would be a fair return. Id take a guy in ABall no matter what position.

Re: Bench Spots
Can Janish play in AAA anymore? I think he has no options left! So he will be one of the bench players.
Schafer (when he can go to AAA) Gattis and Pastor to AAA!
