2013 Arbitration Eligible Players

@mlbbowman: Braves will sign at least a few of their 6 arb-eligibles today. Any unsigned will likely go to a hearing. Braves are a file-and-trial team. Heyward, Prado, Medlen, Venters, EOF, Martinez.

@Braves: LHP Eric O'Flaherty has agreed to terms on a one-year contract for 2013, thus avoiding salary arbitration.
@mlbbowman: Eric O'Flaherty's one-year deal with the Braves is worth $4.32 million and includes awards bonuses. #Braves

@ajcbraves: Venters and #Braves agreed to 1-year, $1.625 million deal, avoiding arbitration

@ajcbraves: #Braves agreed to terms with Medlen, avoiding salary arbitration
@ajcbraves: Medlen got 1-year, $2.6 million deal, more than most had projected.

@mlbbowman: The Braves avoided arbitration with Jason Heyward with a one-year $3.65 million deal includes awards bonuses.

@Rotoworld_BB: Tommy Hanson inks $3.725M deal with Halos dlvr.it/2pphvw

Man...$4.32 million for EOF...guy's built a great career for someone the Braves picked up off the scrap heap.

Martinez has also been signed...only leaves Prado.

Gonna depend on his math being correct because I didn't add em up. @buckbelue8: Braves spent over $12M today, signing Heyward, Medlen, O'Flaherty & Venters. #MoneyWellSpent

Still dont have figures on Martinez and Prado.

RE: 2013 Arbitration Eligible Players

We're currently sitting above all of the projections on B-Ref.

Venters and Heyward only just over, Medlen and EOF fairly well over. But Prado's own asking price is well below B-Ref's projection so assuming the Braves lose his arby hearing we'd be looking at

Prado - 7.05
EOF - 4.32
Heyward - 3.65
Medlen - 2.6
Venters - 1.63

But we should wind up being within a million of the projection. Assuming that if we have 700k for Martinez Our arb guys will make just short of 20M (19.95) and projections have us at 19.1 so not bad.

So that would still leave us with how much left to spend?

If we're at 20M in arb our salary would be at 82.3 roughly according to Bref guesses. For rounding sakes lets say that's 83 since offs are we won't average 500K for out pre-arb players which would average 563.6K which is much more likely average.

But that would depend on what Wren said is true, I believe we have to spend over 84 million as our floor with LM so we'll have to make some move, assuming the 95-100K is true we'd have 12-17M total.

Re: 2013 Arbitration Eligible Players

Prado was the only arbitration-eligible Brave not to agree to terms before Friday’s 1 p.m. deadline for major league teams to do so or swap salary-arbitration figures with those players. He filed a $7.05 million asking price, and the Braves filed at $6.65 million, a $400,000 difference of opinion that's smaller than most others for unsigned players on arbitration salary-swap day.

I hope this means that they are close to an extension of some sort, as $400,000 seems like a small number to be haggling over from both sides.

Re: 2013 Arbitration Eligible Players

I find it very disappointing and troubling that we couldn't come to terms with Prado, especially given that he only asked for $7.05M.  We actually are haggling over $400,000 with a guy who is one of the most important pieces to this team, who has played every position asked of him never complaining, whose versatility has been extremely important to us over the past several years?

Now we hear that we won't even continue to negotiate with him, that we will go to the arb hearing and talk about why he doesn't deserve his money to his face?   Why in the world would we not want to continue do everything possible to at least come to this one year agreement instead of breaking off talks at this point?

Very disappointing and troubing indeed.

Re: 2013 Arbitration Eligible Players

agree.  If anyone deserves the money Prado would be high on my list.   The way he is willing to do anything asked of him to help the Braves win and the team is taking a hard line on $400,000 seems silly.   Guess we should not expect him to give us a 'hometown discount' when he goes to FA.

Re: 2013 Arbitration Eligible Players

It does nothing but tell Prado that we don't appreciate all he has done for this organization, that he isn't worth what he is asking.  He moved off 2nd to accomodate Uggla, he has played 1st, 2nd, 3rd, ss, lf and rf all really well, all the while never complaining and doing what is best for the team.  Now we want to take a hard line on him like this?

If I were him, I would now realize where I stand with the Braves, play this year 100% as usual, and then would enter free agency and would be gone.

IMO this is a very poor strategy being employed by the Braves.

This tells me the Braves don't see Prado as a long term fixture on this team.

I agree this is very bad form. Sometimes you can lose a negotiation you win.

Re: 2013 Arbitration Eligible Players

Or they are working on an extension that includes this year (maybe Wren learned or is concerned by the Uggla situation?). This doesn't automatically mean Prado isn't in their long term plans.

RE: 2013 Arbitration Eligible Players

From what I've read, seems like Prado is keen on testing FA. Not much Wren can do then. Though, EOF seems to be a screaming trade. When was the last time we paid a non closer RP over 4MM + possible bonuses?

Re: 2013 Arbitration Eligible Players

Bowman mentioned recently that Prado wanted a multi-year deal and the Braves briefly entertained it (in Dec) but could not agree on money.

The Braves walked away from the table.  Not good.

I tend to agree with those who think this signals 1) Prado will test FA which means bye bye and or 2) the Braves don't see Prado as a long term solution and may flip him in a trade.

I have heard Prado being included in a deal for JUpton to protect pitching surplus (guess they are worried about how Beachy comes back and if Medlen can actual start all season).  Not sure how that works given it would mean Juan F starting at 3B.

So I am guessing Prado gets his 7.05mm and then leaves to FA in 11 months.  Uggla is the guy who needs to go but Fredi loves him and Frank signed a deal that makes him untradeable w/o a massive uptick in performance.

Bottom line fans love Prado more than Wren.  They still view him as a utility guy who can start.  Too bad.

Re: 2013 Arbitration Eligible Players

Wren almost traded Prado the previous off-season too. So I am not shocked that Wren and co. clearly undervalue him. This is bad mistake and very disappointing, IMO. But so was the way they handled the David Ross situation, etc. We likely could've re-signed Ross mid-season this past year (just as we'd done before) if we really wanted to keep him.
Zito on Simmons (2/24/12):  if Simmons can be as good as Alexei that would shock me. If we could get Alexei and Lilli for Beachy and get cash I would do it. Being "arguably the best defensive SS in the minors" means nothing...

I don't know where you're getting that because from what I've read Prado wants to stay. Wren and co. apparently walked away because they didn't like what he was asking. But that likely isn't due to Prado asking for the moon. It seems to be more the case of how Wren and co. value Prado.
