Braves Haven't Closed The Door On Michael Bourn

Braves Haven't Closed The Door On Michael Bourn

I thought this deserved its on thread.

The Braves' signing of B.J. Upton in November ostensibly took them out of the running for fellow free agent center fielder Michael Bourn.  However, General Manager Frank Wren told SiriusXM's Jim Bowden (on Twitter) that the club still hasn't closed the door on Bourn.

If Atlanta were to sign Bourn, Wren says that it would be a toss up on who would play center field and who would play left field (Twitter link).

I wonder if BJ cares about playing CF. Bourn could sign a one year deal and test the market again next year.

It would be the ideal situation if we could get Bourn back on a one year deal. We'd be maxed out financially, but we'd keep our depth and have no long term commitment.

It also gives the Braves another year to assess the minor league talent

On the same radio interview Wren said Gattis is considered a top prospect at 26 and based on all the calls he has received from GMs trying to pry Gattis away from us it shows that other teams see his value.

@Jim_Duquette: in regards to Brian McCann and contract talks "we've spoken and both sides have decided to wait until the end of the year" to talk further.

@KevinMcAlpin: Wren tells MLB Network Radio that he thinks Julio Teheran is probably front runner for 5th spot at this point given strong finish in DR

Wren hasn't closed the door. But he put some broken glass in the doorway and expects Boras to crawl in on hands and knees begging for an offer before he makes a new one.

Gattis is clearly over values just by the posters on this board.

Bourn had a peak season in 2012. He's not going anywhere on a one-year deal. He's not going to drastically improve in 2013. If anything, he risks lowering his value.

This is typical Boras waiting out the free agent process to get max dollars. If Bourn comes back to the Braves, money would have to get moved around, eg Uggla or Maholm trade.

If he comes back it will be on the braves terms and no money will be moved.

Yes...I'm crazy about him. The last player I was this crazy about was Medlen. Unfortunately before Medlen is was francouer. Oh well. 50%.

I just don't get why the Braves would trade 4 assets for a need that may not even be a need. I will tone it down. I know I'm annoying.

So, the Braves have about 6-8 million left to spend. So, you think Bourn can't get the market?

If Bourn signs anywhere it would be on joint terms. That's usually how contracts work.

I listened to the entire interview and Wren clearly stated Bourn was a financial option in describing the ongoing formation of the 2013 roster. Nobody but the Braves accounting department actually knows the real budget and available dollars. Of course if Bourn signs with another team he is no longer an option regardless of how much money is at Wrens disposal.

I have seen 10-12 different financial payroll scenarios and we won't know until all arbitration cases are settled and any extensions decided upon

@Jim_Duquette: GM #Braves Frank Wren - we haven't closed the door on Bourn, we have the financial flexibility AND player talent flexibility to improve our club

That statement right there points to the fact only the Braves know where their ceiling on payroll is.

There is $25M coming next season from TV deal and they may be considering those funds or part of those funds for use for this coming roster per Wren from a different interview

Braves better use that 25 million to lock up Heyward. They can't risk him having an MVP year and then pay him more than they could have this year.

I just don't get why they don't lock him up. it doesn't make any sense to me.

Nothing would be better for the franchise than to read about Heyward signing an 8 year deal.

Great news from same interview.

@KevinMcAlpin: Wren tells MLB Network Radio that Brian McCann's shoulder feels great, he's excited and hopes to be ready in early April. #Braves

In a related interview Mac was quoted as saying he was shooting for opening day as his target start time. That's pretty ambitious so we shall see what Wren, Fredi and the doctors say about that when the time comes.
