RE: Javier Vasquez Considering a Return
I loved Javy, but I think he was better under Bobby than he'd ever be, we'd need Bobby to like flash his moobs when it's time for Javy to be pulled.

Re: Javier Vasquez Considering a Return
Some time off probobly did his arm some good. I'd give him a look. Not to mention we are still in need of a leadoff hitter/another bat in general.
Chipper+Bourn>Upton+Francisco/Gattis........by far, not even close.

Re: Javier Vasquez Considering a Return
Tough question, Braves probably need a dependable Veteran besides Hudson in the rotation. Minor will be there as will Beachy and or Medlen, the problem is what about the young arms who are ready for a shot at the rotation. Do they stay in the Minors if Vasquez was effective, you trade one or two for Bats?
The Starting staff could be very good or very bad in 2013, my concern is the amount of innings they can hold up with. Hudson,Beachy,Medlen all have has issues with health...... Vasquez in his career has always logged innings, not a bad insurance policy.

Re: Javier Vasquez Considering a Return
He costs no prospects. I assume he liked Atlanta because he did well here. He could be traded at the deadline (if absolutely necessary). We got some good wins out of Ben Sheets last year, for example. Gwinnett is only miles away if Delgado or Teheran are needed (and they have Options left anyway). It allows Wren flexibility to trade a starter for a bigger bat.
How is there a downside? If he has nothing in ST or the first month, release him. If he pitches OK but not great, flip him at the deadline. Or, if he pitches like his last time here, ride him to the play-offs! He can't be any worse than Livan Hernandez last year AND if Delgado or Teheran are really ready for "the Show", let one or both prove it by dominating during ST!!
As Bill Shanks said so often: options, options and more options!

Re: Javier Vasquez Considering a Return
I'd love to have the guy back for the right price. If i remember correctly, he got off to a horrid start in 2011, but turned it around and was awesome in the second half. Sure that was a few years ago, but I still say he's worth a look. Im with sturg, if we happened to trade Medlen or Delgado/Teheran for an outfielder...Javier could be a good option.

That said, total fan of his, here, and would support his return. No compensation? Plus, like others have suggested, package some younger pitching for the LF help.
Kelly Johnson? Utley-like IMO.

The bad teams can offer him an open spot in their rotation, but he wants to go to a contender. I'd fear the Yankees here, but didn't he get run out of town there?

Re: Javier Vasquez Considering a Return
Peter Gammons reported this morning on Hot Stove that there is a lot of interest in Javy. He named 3 teams Nats, Red Sox and Braves. Said he was hitting 93-94 and impressing a lot of folks. This is the first time this offseason I have heard the Braves name connected with interest with any pitcher. Very interesting. Makes me believe the interest could be connected to some young pitching (Teheran and/or Delgado) being available for bat.
Since the Braves are so tight lipped it is anyone's guess which direction they are going.

Re: Javier Vasquez Considering a Return
Only way I see Vaz coming here is if Maholm is used in a trade for a bat. I just don't see any way to make the money work if one of the cheap SPs is traded to make room for Vaz, who will certainly not pitch for peanuts.
I would definitely rather have Vaz in the rotation over Maholm.

RE: Javier Vasquez Considering a Return
Some team will offer more I'm sure but he liked it here and maybe he's not ****** that we traded him. I like Vaz and his arm is tested and won't have to give up a pick. Didn't Freddie coach him n Florida?

Have to make the effort, esp. with Washington making strong overtures. Prevent them from getting him.

RE: Javier Vasquez Considering a Return
I would love to sign him. Read this today Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports heard from a scout on Thursday that Javier Vazquez "physically looks great." The scout thinks Vazquez, a free agent, could be a "sneaky good pickup" for some team. The Red Sox are expected to give him a look on Friday in the Puerto Rican Winter League and the Nationals scouted him last week. Vazquez, 36, did not pitch professionally in 2012. He owns a 4.22 career ERA and a 1.25 career WHIP. Trade Delgado or Teheran and Sign Vaz to be the "#5". that would be great IMO.

Re: Javier Vasquez Considering a Return
You folks are looking short term when you build a club for the long haul. Javier did not pitch last year and he would be blocking Delgado and Tehran who desperately need major league experience. If he came to the braves and we look a year out you have three starters possibly gone. Hudson, Muholm and Javier. Who fills those slots? JR and Gilmartin who is green is a bad idea. Everybody keeps saying to trade Randall and Tehran but they have pitched in the bigs and I think ready to break out.

Re: Javier Vasquez Considering a Return
Well, one of Teheran/Delgado would probably be involved in a trade for a bat (JUpton). He won't be signed unless we are trading away a starter. Now, if we trade away a starter, I think Javy would be a great and cheap option to fill out the 5th spot in the rotation. JUp+Vaz > Teheran/Delgado + Franciso/Gattis. bigbravesfan99 wrote: You folks are looking short term when you build a club for the long haul.
