Braves are close to signing with catcher Gerald Laird.

I like it.

Probably the best fit on the FA backup catcher market.  Good to go ahead and get that spot taken care of.  I'm sure it's a 1 year deal, but will be interested to see how the money compares to what Ross got.

Funny that we even care about the back-up catcher. tongue Most fans don't even know who the second catcher is on their team. Wonder if it's because we've been spoiled by Ross' great work these last few years OR McCann's injury streak or a little of both??

And, imo, Laird is a good pick-up.

Laird has played on some winning teams pretty much his whole career. I hate losing rossy but signing laird is a really good pickup. Hes not ross but he wont hurt us when hes in there.

One of the 2 I wanted. I prefer Shoppach but odds are he'll be solid. Hopefully he'll get on whatever mojo Ross had here and outperform his career norms in Atlanta.

Why? Surely he's not making that much different salary than Ross did and, from what I hear on here, CB can hardly hit!

@Ken_Rosenthal: #Braves in agreement with Laird to be their new backup catcher. @mlbbowman first reported deal was close.

@mlbbowman: Laird has agreed to a two-year deal. Financial details have not been revealed.

Bethancourt had a very poor year hitting in AA.  But he does have some potential.  Doesn't strikeout very much, puts the ball in play and the batting average has been pretty good.  CB's had some streaks where he's shown some power, so we know he's capable.  Just turned 21, so there's still time to grow and get stronger.

Hope he puts something together in 2013.  Christian Bethancourt is an important player in the Braves system.

He is a very important player for the Braves, but there's a lot more than what you stated. He strikes out a healthy amount, 15.6% in AA while not super high, probably means that he'll not K lower than that in the majors. What distresses me is his way too low BB%. 3.8 in AA last year, and his power numbers are weak.

You're right he has potential though, so you have to hope he improves on his K%, BB% and iso. or he'll be a very good backup.

RE: Gerald Laird Agrees to 2 Yr Deal w/Braves

Two year deal. No numbers yet.

Realistically I see Bethancourt back in AA in 2013 and spending at least part of 2014 in AAA.

Having Laird on a two-year deal allows us to give Bethancourt whatever development time he needs. Plus it avoids putting us into a situation where we potentially would have to acquire two major league catchers next off-season.

Please explain why you would rather have a guy start for a month that couldn't even put up a 600 OPS in AA last year.

CB doesn't even have an offensive game to improve. He has to improve dramatically just to become a backup option, much less a starting option. He literally can't hit...at all.

Solid. Big step down from Ross, but we could do a lot worse. I'm guessing Lard/Bethancourt until McCann gets back.

People diss on Bethancourt, but he is a very good young catching prospect. He's going to be a long major leaguer.
