Ross to sign with Sox

Sources: Free-agent catcher David Ross agrees to two-year deal with  # RedSox, pending physical.

Ouch.  Sure hate to see Ross leave.  Wonder if the money was just too much for an aging backup to pass up.  Hope it wasn't a case of not feeling prioritized by the Braves this offseason.  Rossy has been a great fit here and by far the best backup catcher the Braves have had in a long time.  Hate that particularly with McCann's health uncertain for April.

This is not good for the Braves. I thought Ross was virtually a lock to return. He must have been given some sort of chance at maybe starting the Sox.
Problem is the free agent crop of available catchers suck, and whoever, the Braves get is going to have play a least the first month of the season.
Let's just say the off-season is not exactly off to a great start.

Highly doubt Wren would have allowed this to happen if he does not have a plan/trade in place.

This sucks but its not the end of the world. Rossy will be missed, but we still have mac, and then bethancourt on the mend. Im just wondering how it went from rossy virtually a lock to stay, and now to him signing with the sox. Good luck to him! We will be fine. Just let this play out.

I'm thinking the Sox must have offered more money or the second guaranteed year.  Braves probably wanted Ross back on a 1 year deal around the same salary, which is reasonable for a 36 year old backup on a team with our budget constraints.  A guy like Ross at this stage of his career though couldn't pass up significantly more money or more stability like a multi-year offer.

2 years, 6.2 million for Ross.

That is a lot of money for an aging backup catcher. Didn't he only get around 1.5 million a year here?

I don't see it. Although with the horrible batch of free agent, who knows it could happen.

Eddie Perez thinks he can do it. This opens up a spot for Gattis and lets Wren go for a LF like Willingham.

Re: Ross to sign with Sox

Rosenthal hears that Ross will be "more than a backup but not a starter" with  Boston (Twitter link). The Red Sox already have Jarrod  Saltalamacchia and Ryan  Lavarnway behind the plate, but the former  hit just .170/.211/.283 against left-handers this year while the latter hit  .157/.211/.248 overall in 166 late season plate appearances. Ross gives them a  platoon partner for Salty while Lavarnway could continue to refine his game in  Triple-A. As a right-handed hitter, Ross should benefit from playing in Fenway  Park.

Ross made $1.625MM last year, so if Gattis is going to be our backup catcher, that would save around $1.125MM for other areas. While I hate to see Rossy go, I really hope this means Gattis will be our backup catcher/starter for the first month.

Yeah I think his last deal here was 2 years, $3 million.  If that's the figure, then it makes perfect sense why he'd have to jump on it and why the Braves would let him.  I was thinking it must be 2/5 but 2/6.2 is really overwhelming for a backup who'll be 36 next year.  That's not money Wren can afford to match for that roster spot.  Yet another luxury the Braves can't afford.

This really sucks. I'm curious what the deal is and why we wouldn't match it. But with Gattis and CB coming soon I guess it doesn't make a lot of sense to spend a good amount of money there. Ross is awesome but he's still a backup catcher.

Bad move by Wren. If used right, Ross could have a big year. Braves should had kept Ross and better utilized him.

I would have matched the offer. It's a lot but with McCann's future questionable, don't see much choice.
