Trrr,

I posted another Abreu signing link on the Hot Stove as well.  Feel free to move it.

As for this signing without discussing money side of it, I LOVE IT!

1.  There is a more patient hitter at the DH/RF position.

2.  Abreu can share his plate discipline and batting wisdom for another two (potentially 3 years).

3.  Hatcher can ride Bobby's coattails, shut up, and collect a paycheck.

Per www.mlbtraderumors.com:

Price says the deal is worth $19MM guaranteed. Abreu will be paid $9MM in 2010 and 2011, plus a $1MM buyout of a $9MM option for 2012 that could vest based on plate appearances. Given how the market treated Abreu last year, it's not a surprise that he jumped on this offer.

RE: Abreu... back for two more years!!

Overpaid for a choke artist. I'd rather have GMJ on his money than Abreu on his.  (Exageration but not that far off)

Awful, awful deal.

Arte Moron-o strikes again, but it's okay Arte... Give the fans cheaper beer and they'll see past your ******** for life.

Guaranteed Lackey walks and the morons in the front office will complain that we didn't have any money. To think for five million more we could have had a REAL player.

P.S. Great lot of good his 'wisdom' had in the Yankees series. How many first pitch pop ups did we (especially by one of the guys he was supposed to have helped the most in Figgins) see?

P.S. If we lose Lackey and the office complains of money I pray that they fire everyone including Morono.

HUGE exageration. That statement makes absolutely no sense.

umm you would rather have GMJ for his money than abreu on his??? are you aware that GMJ will be making more than bobo aside from the fact that abreu produced a .300 season 15hr's 100rbi and 30 sb's?

And fire moreno im pretty sure he is thought of as one of the best owners in the game if not the best and also pretty sure that no one in the organization has the ability to "fire" thier owner!

Re: Abreu... back for two more years!!

I like the move and if Bobby can remain a consistent run producer, it is money well spent.  I think the Angels have made an organizational move to invest in their youngsters by signing Abreu because of his approach to hitting.  What better way to teach young hitters how to approach each at bat than to have someone model the behavior.  The Angels purchased their hitting coach for young players for the next 2 years and possibily a third.  If you simply look at the money from a statistical approach, it appears as a potentially bad contract but Abreu's influence will hopefully reach far into the Angels' future at bats.  I personally would rather have Bobby teaching hitting to the young Angel hitters than Mickey Hacker.

Cool deal-Can hardly wait for the next move.

And in response to firing the owner-hmmmm.  How about firing a "fan"?

If and/or when Lackey walks there's your answer.

If he stays then if Bay / Holiday sign in the 15 mil dollar range then either one of them. Take your pick

I'm sorry but I was done with Abreu the second that he committed a high school calibre running error in game 3 or 4 of the ALCS. That proved, at least to me, that either he's not as smart as they make him out to be (or he simply didn't want to win *hint, hint*). I also seriously doubt that  his so-called influence is half as influential as it could be. I know the players keep spouting that he's being influential on pitch selection but when one of those main players saying it is Chone Figgins, a player who kept getting out on stupid pop flys on the first pitch (an image that will remain with me for a long time as it was simply inexcusable) it speaks more than words.

I really just believe that the money could have been invested a lot more correctly.

Arte, for someone as loved as he is, has made a lot of really silly errors in his time as owner of the Angels. Now, I don't for a second put it all on him as he's had a number of people in his ear with the bad calls, I just believe that this is another one of them. I'll give the examples of Gary Matthews Jr and Justin Speier.

My question to you is (and hindsight is a wonderful thing which you can use) -- would you have signed Bobby Abreu this year for DOUBLE what he actually signed for? Now, add another year of wear and tear on that body.

Re: Abreu... back for two more years!!

I think the money is there for Bay and Lackey...

Abreu is the DH, but also a fall back option if we cannot get Bay signed.

I know Bay comes up a lot but has anyone seen anything that states we have been linked to him?

RE: Abreu... back for two more years!!

It is in a way a stupid move and I feel we overpaid. Why are we in a rush to give him 9+million for a guy who has little options to go elsewhere, and that team would have to give up a good draft pick in the process?

Im not mad hes back, but why rush into signing him, hes not exactly a hot commodity.

RE: Abreu... back for two more years!!

Abreu would have had options. And he should have made $9 million this season. A 2 year deal is reasonable. However, if the Angels have made it too easy for the third year to be vested....I won't be excited.

I would not pay top dollar for Bay...or Holliday either for that matter. And neither one of them is going to sign a 2 year deal. The dfference in their contracts and Abreu's is more likely to be in the $60-70 million dollar range. And they are also likely to get more than $15 million per year.

Abreu is destined to DH ....sooner as opposed to later. He's not a bargain with this contract...but is a fair deal.

Ah,,,this thread has served it's original purpose....nowthe conversation has drifted into Hot Stove territory. Gonna close it....take Abreu and related issues to the Angels Hot Stove thread.

Thanks.
