Can Hoops Get to 20 Wins?
NMSU is 13-8 with 10 more regular season games and at least one WAC Tournament contest. Can Aggies win seven more games to get to the 20-win mark?
Three Games at Home Against Teams That Have Beaten NMSU
UTEP
LA Tech
UT Arlington
Tough Road Games
Denver
Utah State (don't count them out)
Plus
@ Texas State
@ UTSA
@ SJSU
Idaho
Seattle U
WAC Tournament Game (minimum one)

I think we'll win the rest of the home games, which is a total of 5. I think we will win at UTSA and Texas State for a total of 7. Utah State and San Jose are toss ups. I think we may fall at Denver. So that's seven wins with a good possiblility of two more wins for a total of 9. That's a regular season record of 22 and 9 (optimistically). With one win in the opening round gets us to 23 and 9 going into the WAC quarterfinals/Semifinals.

Good debate/discussion. Some of those "toss up" games may be decided by who we have available.....Chili and or KCRM. Lets not forget we have two starters out right now. Who is MVP at this point in the season? For me it would be Watson during non-conference and Sy during WAC up to this point.

The WAC seems watered down so yeah we can win 20.
The main point that Menzies wants is to win 3 in a row in March in Vegas.
That is his focus. Mention is correct, winning the WAC Tourney depends on if Chili and KCRM can play effectively or not. That is the unknown at this point.
We are playing well right now, and there is every reason to believe we will keep improving. The question is does Chili come back? And if so can he be effective? Does KCRM become a starter again this year and keep improving? Or is he hamstrung and 49%?
If Sim keeps improving we can win 20 and the Tourney. That is our best hope. Dixon appears also to be improving nicely. Aronis may be the wildcard / X factor in the WAC Tourney with his outside shooting. If Aronis takes nicely to the Orleans arena we can win. Otherwise our chances are 50 to 50.
At least how it seems to this old timer.

I think the Ags have a decent shot. Over the last three games the defense has given up 51, 53, and 42 points, taking the defense up a level in my view. That should be enough to keep them in all the remaining games, home or away, IF (and it's a big one) they can handle a press and not give away cheap baskets. We haven't dealt with a significant press since Seattle.
TDR did a pretty good job running the offense Wednesday night, but they weren't pressed (for whatever reason.)
My guess is that they only lose one more, but have a few nailbiter wins.

With this team I would take it one game at a time. I am not going to be looking past the next game and hope the players do this as well. There are a lot of very hungry teams out there that we barely beat the first time.
Dreaming about what ifs just wastes the here and now. Try and enjoy the ride a game at a time because as JT said they have to win the tournament anyway. Win as many as you can for WAC seeding but if we get in to the NCAA tournament we could have won 25 and still not get a seed above 10...more likely 14. So take one game at a time we already saw what happens when the team thinks they can just show up to win games. This team does not need to hear any predictions they need to realize they can be beat by anyone on the schedule least we all forget.

Assuming chile and kc don't make it back, I see a twenty wen season. Keep in mind, under McCarthy at the time all wens over 20 garnered a 10k bonus. Thus if my prediction holds true, and the 20 wens are achieved, MM would be in the bonus with two (2) starters out. If both players make it back, which I'm not pushing for in chilie's case, and we get a decent opponent in the NCAA's, MM should be in the money. That's my prediction.

Same as every year since we've been playing those teams for the last 20, except for every 5th year when your superior conference takes half the teams from our supposed inferior conference. |
