Another ill timed post about the loobs
Since it seemed as if my response would sabotage a different thread about Utah State, Stew Morrel and his cupcake ooc schedule compared with the same formula followed by Steve Elfraud I thought I would start this own thread.
I actually started this analysis over a month ago when some on here were clamoring about Menzies and his poor out of conference record and how Elf and his record was so grand. Well, of course, I felt it was people again talking out their hineys w/o actually looking at "reality" of who the loobs play versus who we play. It gets even more interesting when you consider how many of their ooc games are played at home versus us. Here is a comparison of the loobs ooc schedule versus the aggies ooc schedule during Menzies and Elfs career at the two schools. (I highlighted the teams that finished .500 or below for the season...46 for the Elf over the 5 year period versus 26 for Menzies). As of the time we played the loobs in Abq the announcers stated that Elf had 26 or 29 more wins at UNM over what Menzies had. It would be a lot closer if Menzies had played the schedule Elf especially if most were played at home.

Re: Another ill timed post about the loobs
Here's another interesting tidbit about the loobs impressive ooc scheduling...of "Name" or "Recognized" basketball schools, UNM has only played Texas Tech in Elfs previous 5 years. Menzies has played Duke, Louisville, Texas, West Virginia, Kansas, UCLA, St Mary, UMass, and Arizona. If Elf had played these schools on the road with his previous teams I'm certain he would have had the same result as Menzies. Stew has the same philosophy as Elf.
My overall point in all of this is the loobs have historically been over rated which is why they have the early exit in the tournament. I think dollar for dollar we have as good of a coach as Elf. I also think the loobs are a legitimate Top 40 team this year and give credit to Elf for beating the good teams. As for us, I think we're going to be close to 20 wins this year but don't know if we'll wind up just short. I won't call this a rebuilding year for us by I would call it a "developmental" year to get experience for our future stars.

I thought that win in 93 was rescinded by the NCAA?

As they say....."the proof is in the pudding". As mentioned before, Lobos have played a tough schedule this year but that is not the norm.....we will see down the road.

My offense, Krimson, I find your posts to be quite insightful - if the '93 tourney wins weren't rescinded by the NCAA, my apologies.

Don't let this years schedule fool you. Its not that strong either. Cincy is turning out to be a bust, they aren't ranked anymore and have lost several more home games. UCONN is not the UCONN of old. Their ooc schdule only had what....3 true road games??? NMSU, Cincy and Ill State? This year was stronger than past years but thats not saying much.

Re: Another ill timed post about the loobs
Well when you are generally overrated, going into the first round you get an easy first round game...thus the Loob win. Second round brings a better caliber team and that's why loobs are pretty much one and done. Aggies are generally underrated (our own fault as we generally start slow) and get the much tougher first round (see Michigan State) and that's why it's been tougher to win a first round game lately. We represented well against MSU and for the most part Indiana last year. Loobs pretty much gets exposed and embarrassed...although to the loobs credit the game against Louisville was the best I've seen them play in a long time. Did the Cards overlook UNM? But, I wouldn't crow about winning against a 14th or 15th seed if you are going to talk about 1st round wins. Look back to the first rounder against Montana and then the trouncing of UNM by Washington...just saying. NMSkin wrote:

Re: Another ill timed post about the loobs
Hmmm...I guess the loobs don't like it when the curtain is pulled back. The truth is what the truth is. Elf has played a much softer ooc schedule than Menzies, played more home games against low caliber teams, and haven't played big name basketball schools. But if it works to get you that padded record like It has for Stew and Elf, then maybe Menzies should do the same. I remember Neil playing his fair share of Arkansas pine Bluff, UNC Ashville and Western NM type games too.

RE: Another ill timed post about the loobs
UNM has received some generous seeds in the NCAA Tournament, the most blatant was when Rudy Devilos was AD and a member of the NCAA Selection Committee.

RE: Another ill timed post about the loobs
What is up with all the obsession about UNM on this board? Is it because they swept us again and Marvin sucks against both them and utep?
Anyway, UNM's strength of schedule as of today is 9, and ours is 108, so not sure how this dumb thread even got started.
Let's focus on utah state already and forget about the stupid loobs.
