Aggies and Louisiana Layfette

Aggies win tonight in the Pan Am 79-57.  Bandja Sy finally came up big scoring 16 while going 6-8 from the field.  He also hit both his 3 point attempts and had four blocks on the night.

In addition to Banja, Watson had a good game going 4/5 from the field and 4/5 from the free throw line. Aronis was 4/8, including 3/7 from 3 point. He's getting more PT and can really be a factor. Chili had a good rebounding game with 11 boards.

KCRM had an some good stats and some bad stats. The good: 9/11 free throws, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal. The bad: 1/6 from the field (0/2 3 pt), 4 turnovers.

As a team NMSU had an ugly 26 turnovers---14 by the starters. Good team defense as the Ragin' Cajuns hit only 19 of 64 shots (29.7%).

Mullings had a good game going until he dove for a ball and hit something hard, maybe the floor.  He left the gym and returned by game end.  Did he have to have stitches?

Turnovers, 3 pt shooting and free throw shooting (each in the hideous category) will be the death of this team's chances for a good season...they simply have to improve in each or it will be a long, long year.  So much potential negated by sloppy play and lack of concentration.

Turnovers are going to kill us, and it seems the word is out about our horrible transition defense. Lafayette tried alot of things early to push the ball as quickly as possible from the inbounds. Fortunately for us they were not successful at it. I think this is something UNM will be able to do well against us. As stated Wednesday night will tell us more about the current status of the team.

I actually think the real measuring stick may be next Saturday vs Southern Miss.  Hard to tell how the newbies (mainly KCRM/TDR/Aronis) will react to a very hostile venue at UTEP and whether Sy and Chili will continue their improved play over the last couple of games.  While I'm hopeful for a win, a narrow loss on the road in a rivalry game wouldn't shock me.

On the other hand, So. Miss is 5-0 with an overtime win at Georgia.  Although a different coach, we had trouble with their length and athleticism last year on the road and at a neutral site.  We've got them at home this year - question is - will we beat them at our place?

Turnovers were pretty bad against Lafayette...I think some were credited to the big men when they shouldn't have been. I'm sorry, but if the entry pass is too low then that shouldn't be on the bigs. Mullings is not point guard material but Watson impressed the heck out of me with his ball handling, b-ball IQ, and managing the team. Coach...put Wat at pg and nobody will beat us. Also allows KCRM and TDR to develop rather than thrown to the loobs...I mean wolves.

Boston called the return to the NCAA tournament "a first step" toward the goal he and Theus talked about in Atlanta two years ago.
"We talked about winning a national championship, not about getting into the NCAA tournament," Boston said.
