Niagara Game...
NMSU is up 48-32 at half. Mullings has 19 points. Nephawe has 10 points, 6 rebounds, and two fouls...one is a technical. Sy has 2 points, no rebounds, and 3 fouls. NMSU is 3-6 from the arc, leads in rebounding 17-9, but has 15 turnovers.

This is some bad coaching by Menzies in the 2nd half.

Re: Niagara Game...
Turnovers are killing them. Menzies is going to need to rethink his line up. Niagara's zone has shut down our offense.

All coach....he doesn't understand how to make game time adjustments. Period. You would think after 6 years he'd figure it out.

Re: Niagara Game...
I always get concerned when NMSU is playing well going into halftime. Menzies tends to stay with what is working until it's nolonger effective. Then he is left scrambling trying to find scoring in an otherwise ineffective offense. He knew Niagara was going to make half time adjustments. Despite NMSU big lead, Menzies should have had some designed plays or personnel changes ready to disrupt the Niagara Coach's anticipated adjustments.
Until we get consistent play from our upperclassmen and our point guards, this is going to be a frustrating season. If NMSU continues to lose with this veteran lineup, then I think Menzies needs to consider going with a youth movement. Watson is max'd out talent wise. And, Sy is a head case and undependable as a senior. If we are going to lose, we might as well play our players with the most potential.

Re: Niagara Game...
The problem with NMSU is we have too many incomplete players on the roster. Some lack skills, some are slow-footed, some are head cases. There is nobody on the this team that is a finished product. Right now, Mullings shows the most potential in his development. He is a sophomore, ultra-athletic, and his perimeter shot is starting to come around.
Menzies has continually recruited under developed athletes who need time to hone their skills. As a struggling mid-major, Menzies is posed with the dilemma of either recruit raw athletes with the potential, after a few years of skill development, to compete with the high major programs or recruit average (at best) athletes with more advanced skills that only stand a chance of winning with a slower tempo and superior coaching.

My take is that Menzies is not limited to recruit raw talent or average talent. I say he can do better. I say he can recruit top talent in the United States. Theus did it. Theus had a loaded roster with Hawk, Peete, Passos, Iti, Herb Pope, JY and others. I say it can still be done. Top drawer players can come here if they have a hiccup elsewhere. In basketball all you need is about 3 guys with A plus skills and you have a real team that go real places. Under developed athletes who need time to hone their skills is a fine way to go. All I am saying is sprinkle in 2 or 3 Popes and JY's and Hawks along the way and then you really have something to take you places. Calapari cheats and gets away with it (Rose getting someone else to take his ACT, UMass cheating, etc, etc...). Calamari has cheated for years and had private jets, private dancers, and private off shore accounts to prove it. Did anyone watch those UK specials on ESPN? They made me sick to my stomach as he drove to the private airport in his private Mercedes to fly off in his private jet to recruit his private 5 star player who can't read or write. It made me puke up all over my WAC preseason media guidebook. Calapari is a crook, liar, cheater, and charlatan. That much is plain and simple. You could just feel the slime oozing out of those ESPN specials. He tries to cover it up by wearing pink, visiting cancer children, and cooking soup for homeless Louisville fans. He does not fool me for one minute. I say do both. Recruit raw talent, and polished talent that may have a tarnish or two. Don't limit yourself. Take a chance on a Herb Pope type of player. One who is fully developed and may have hit a snag along the way. There are plenty of these players in America. I am not saying we should cheat, but we should try and take those on the very edge of not cheating. We need three of these every 2 years. Just find 3 of them. Just 3 baby. Just 3. JT

JT This is a different WAC from a few years ago. It is much harder to recruit players like Young, Pope, Hawkins, etc. to this conference configuration. Their is no drawing power even with Utah State still in the conference. I think Menzies has recruited good players but they don't come here immediately ready to play D1 ball. However, it is players like Sy and Nephawe that frustrate me. With Watson, we known he has limitions in his game and he is playing up to his potential. However, Sy and Nephawe given their physical attributes are performing well below their potential. The others are young or just haven't impressed Menzies enough in practice to get more playing time.

Re: Niagara Game...
This loss blows and I'm with JT that sometimes Coach Menzies sticks with a lineup too long. KCRM is not the answer. I work with a guy who went to Kentucky and he told me that KC was really good as a sophomore in high school but he didn't progress as much as anticipated. Gillespie honored the scholarship though but lost his job and Callipari entered the scene. Callipari paid for, I mean recruited a better guard and KC left so that he could see more play time at a different school. I don't need to go into the rest of his journey but I don't think he is the starting guard of a Kentucky pedigree.
I would still like to see Coach Menzies make a shift to a different "main" 5 in the second half. One where Watson plays the point...he had 5 assists today and has shot 4 of 6 from behind the arc the last 2 games. He is doing what Seniors are supposed to do. Two lineups that I think deserve floor time are Watson, Weary, Mullings, Nephawe, and Dixon. The other is Watson, Mullings, Sy, Nephawe and West. We need more West and Weary. I'd like to get the games secured so that Barry can start getting some garbage minutes to start building some confidence.

Re: Niagara Game...
After his sophomore season of highschool, I don't think KCRM developed enough physically to actually play for Kentucky. However, he did still average 27 ppg and 9 apg as senior for a HS team that went 28-3. So, I still think he has the tools to be an excellent point guard. It may take him all season to get comfortable with Menzies system but I still feel KCRM running the show gives NMSU the best option for success down the road.

RE: Niagara Game...
It is team chemistry and it will take a few games for things to mesh. KCRM is the answer. One cannot have a walkon with limited talent at the point. If that happens then perhaps you can toss the rest of the season.

Re: Niagara Game...
It would be great to get more of Weary and West in the game. Callipari coaches and makes the guys work for their spots. MM plays his favorites no matter how hard players are working behind the scenes. The players MM is playing are not bringing success. I understand that the team needs to mesh and the PG is young, but that is by no means a reason to lose a 22 point lead. MM really needs to try his other players...nothing else needs to be said.

TDR is the better of the 2 options we have,,,plus his energy and "D" is needed badly!!!

Re: Niagara Game...
I have to agree about TDR he has scored more, had more assists and played better defense. KC RM has shown that he can score at the D1 level at UNO. The fact that he was recruited by Kentucky shows that he has some real potential. I don't understand why he has held back until to this point. He may be trying to be more of a distributor but if he plays more aggressive and looks for his spots he will find more passing opportunities as well, right now he is making very few assists.

RE: Niagara Game...
He is talking about DeRouen but I think most Aggie fans don't share his sentiment. I like DeRouen's potential but I also like Ross-Miller's potential as well. DeRouen hustles more but I can tell Ross-Miller is a better ball handler.
