The Sad End of the WAC

The Sad End of the WAC
On Saturday afternoon NMSU will play its last home WAC football game and sadly the end of the WAC comes with a whimper rather than with a bang.
There will likely be few people in the stands and the naysayers will boast that "there were more people at the Cruces-Mayfield game."
A win by NMSU over a good SJSU game is possible, but the odds are against the Aggies. It's been that way since NMSU joined the WAC with much fanfare in 2005. Going into this game NMSU has a horrid 8-52 record against WAC opponents. A new coach and an infusion of short-term funding was supposed to turn NMSU into a better program, generate more ticket sales and the program would take off. It didn't. And now here we are with no conference and facing an uncertain future.
NMSU has two more games this year....a home game IN TWO WEEKS (Nov. 24) versus powerhouse BYU and the season finale on the road versus Texas State. It's a tough time being a NMSU Aggie right now, but I'm still holding out hope that things will get better.

Re: The Sad End of the WAC
For reference, in it's four years in the Sun Belt NMSU was 15-11 against conference opposition, 20-27 overall.
In seven full seasons and the current season NMSU is 21-75 overall since joining the WAC, and again, 8-52 in conference games.

Re: The Sad End of the WAC
Could be worse. Could be rainin'.
Oh, wait,
"Overcast with a chance of rain in the morning, then partly cloudy with a chance of rain. High of 72F. Windy. Winds from the WSW at 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 45 mph. Chance of rain 20%."
Maybe an unpleasant but fitting finish.

Re: The Sad End of the WAC
Mumme went 11-38 with 4 WAC wins (including the "0-fer" season of 2005). That's an overall winning percentage of 22.4%. Walker has gone 10-37 - also with 4 WAC wins. Overall winning percentage of 21.3%. Unless the Aggies beat SJSU and/or Texas State, their two worst seasons since joining the WAC will be their first, and their last. When you average one conference win a year over a span of 8 years with an overall winning percentage of 21.9%, it's not difficult to understand why NMSU doesn't have the MWC or C-USA salivating to get them to join. Hard work pays off eventually. Procrastination pays off now.

Re: The Sad End of the WAC
To me the WAC is not sad at all.
And is not over yet.
The end of the WAC is when NMSU Basketball plays its last WAC game.
NMSU is a Basketball school. Always has been. Always will be.
And Basketball in the WAC is NOT OVER yet.
The WAC is a great thing and where we belong.
Things in life are plain and simple and true.
NMSU belongs in the WAC. We are a WESTERN Team. In all sports.
This is not in question. We do NOT belong in the sun belt, texas league, or east coast league. We belong in the WEST.
Aggie Basketball is poised to have a great 2 to 3 year run. In the WAC.
The WAC is not at a sad end. Sorry.
I just don't see it.

The final WAC football game in Aggie Memorial Stadium. If the final score doesn't scream "Sad", I don't know what does.

Re: The Sad End of the WAC
Time to stop giving the drowning conference any more water from us. NMSU needs to do whatever it possibly can to secure a spot in another conference and do it now. KegAggie wrote:

Re: The Sad End of the WAC
Will you Aggie fans stop crying about not having a conference to play football in. NM St. and Idaho could have saved the WAC and committed to the conference. The WAC had FCS schools that wanted to move up. Bad leadership killed the WAC. They wanted in the MWC instead saving the WAC. I still believe the WAC can be saved if everybody committ to the conference.

I still believe the WAC can be saved if everybody committ to the conference. Hard to do now that Idaho will be in the BSC for Oly. The WAC is dieing a slow death. The WAC no longer has football, now they w ont have Softball either. We have to find a confrence for them too now. What sport is next that the WAC will drop? Schools in the WAC said they would Commit to it and then the Spring Exodus happened. The word Commit is an imaginary word in college athletics. As for FCS move ups Montana is having a bad year, QB rape charges, Spring firings. They were the only ones who if they did move up, others would have followed. NMSU has enough on its plate and cannot worry about what is happening to the WAC. The WAC is causing more problems for NMSU then solving them. The WAC is dead plain and simple. NMSU needs out and we need out ASAP.

Re: The Sad End of the WAC
The WAC is dead. We all knew football was gone, now softball is gone. When will be the next sport to disappear.
For the sake of the health of our other sports we need out now.
