OFFICIAL NCAA Championship Rifle Thread - 3/12 & 3/13

The Navy Rifle team has had a great season but we've been tripped up twice by Army!  At least we beat Air Force!  I think we are building strength and are about to rally at the right time going into the NCAA Championships.  I've been doing my research on this.

Winning the MAC Championship is not enough.  This is a must win for Navy.  We need this win if we ever are going to get to the next level!

I see Navy coming out strong with Small Bore.  Air Rifle has been consistent all year and I expect us to dominate!

GameTracker has been on the fritz lately, so I don't think it'll matter since they aren't using it for this event.  I'll try to get updates out as quickly as I am able.

GO NAVY!!!

I think we've really got a shot here to put the program on the map.  Anyone got some intel on the shooters at NAPS?

I did not know that we had NAPS rifle until now, so I cannot help you here.

You're right, we don't.  I should have googled that first...rookie mistake. That could be why our program isn't at the top, where it belongs.

I hope we come through, but Alaska Fairbanks always plays really tough D. But our unique offense could surprise em a little. Hope they don't call any chop shots on us.

Re: OFFICIAL NCAA Championship Rifle Thread - 3/12 &

The best part is that we are a really young team and our recruiting has been outstanding. As good as 2010 has been, I get really excited thinking about our prospects for 2011. All the skill positions are returning and there are quite a few gems in the incoming class who I expect to could make an immediate impact. Coach Bill Kelley has always ignored seniority in order to get the best people into the game.

I was thinking that we should move Ryan Williams from Air Rifle to Smallbore since that is our weakest position. I expect this young man to really step up next season and we should expect great things from this warrior who will make an outstanding future leader and officer.

It is really a shame that there is no coverage.  You would think that they could figure out a way to get it done.

That is a good read Phat, thanks -- I feel like I'm learning a lot already about this team.  One thing we cannot take for granted is that at a service academy there is no such thing as an easy win -- none of our shooters were even looked at by schools like Murray State, so if we don't aim our hearts out from full to empty clip we will lose.

That's a great point Gaetano01. We can't get ahead of ourselves and take anything for granted. I shouldn't even be looking at 2011 yet. One match at a time. We need to stay focused.

Food For Thought

Food for thought..swap Burleson and Wang

CB is a monster and could be a real force shooting inside Wang and Lankes

Now that could be a fromidable front 3

If Williams is a good as they say...let him try Josh Albright's old position. Pretty much equal size

Re: OFFICIAL NCAA Championship Rifle Thread - 3/12 &

I don't know why CBK isn't using JC more.  I know some former Navy Rifleers, like JG (an old TEAM CAPTAIN), and JC is a JG-remix.  He should be involved in every round fired.

The other thing that I don't understand is why Chet let TCU host the NCAA's.  When you have a facility like FedEx Field that could easity hold 230,000 people adjacent to campus, he must think he can get some better deal.  We should probably start to re-think whether Chet actually knows what he is doing.

Also, I hope the brigade will not prevented from attending.  The only way this team stands a chance is if they have the full support of the brigade.  These kids are almost as smart and prepared as ensigns, and should be allowed to make important choices about whether they should do their job, or support their friends.  But don't get me wrong, if this were a madatory event, I would still want them to have the ability to choose not to go.  You gotta question the leadership there.

Doing well in this match will really pay off for CBK when he hits the recruiting trail.  I saw a youtube clip of a kid trap shooting beer cans his brother was thowing, and in the highlight film he got nearly every one.  He looks to be the real deal.  If we could get him to go back to high school, graduate, convert him to rifle, and convince him to join the Navy, he will take us to the next level, and is sure to be a lock for the Daniel Boone (the "Boonie").

I hear all of Army's shooters want to shoot guns professionally after graduation.  Probably just a recruiting ploy, "Oh look, join the army and you can be like Kelly Buck and shoot guns."  Like EVERYBODY who joins will have THAT opportunity.  They would be better served if they put that marksmanship skill to better use, like sticking around after graduation to coach.

GO NAVY!  BEAT ARMY! (and Alaska-Fairbanks...who, really, should be one of biggest rivals, because, if you haven't already noticed, both schools are located in America.)

If Navy wants shooters all they need to do is recruit in Columbus, GA home of Fort Benning.  The high schools have teams and the military base supports the schools and hosts events.  They also get media coverage.

We need to find a way to get the shots to the Air Riflers more. Remember, As make plays! We always seem to do better when the As get more shots.

Nate Bullard should have been on the rifle team. I've heard amazing stories about his marksmanship.

Re: OFFICIAL NCAA Championship Rifle Thread - 3/12 &

I heard Navy lost a former verbal commit to Air Forces's rifle team last week. Their coaches told them if they went to Navy they would end up leading Marine sniper teams in Afghanistan.
At Air Force the recruit was swayed when he learned that after four year his AF service would be hunting game 9-5 in Colorado.

Where can I look up computer rankings for rifle, which show things like SOS?

I too have been doing some research on this, and it looks like West Virginia has been National Champion or Runner-up 20 of the last 30 years, and Alaska-Fairbanks has been outright National Champs 9 of the last 11  eek.  Color me scared.

The Hatfields and McCoys take their shootin' pretty seriously. Maybe that's why KY, Murray (also from KY), and WVU are all at nationals!

Fire Bill Kelley. For years now we have been stagnant, he has done all he can with this staff, it is time for a change. We will never get to the next level with this staff. Maybe some of you are content with this performance, I think we should strive to be the best at everything we do.

Frankly, I don't think CBK is doing a very good job calling the shots.  You are absolutely right, Witt, I think we need to shake things up, starting at the top.  Just getting to the show is not enough at USNA...we should be at the top.  Post-season performance is a must, CBK just isn't bringing it.  disbelief ohlord mad flushed banghead

I completely agree! I always enjoy your posts, Witt94, because they are spot on! We should all have more respect for your experience. You have an extra amount of right to state your opinions--because you have helped to defend our country, whereas civilians like myself have never been in the military. This is why I give you a lot of slack...an extra amount of right. You have earned it, like all other military people. There are a few/some on this thread that come off like you should have totally kept your mouth shut. I for one am glad you didn't. This is my right to say this. Those other board inner circle members have been played!

Re: OFFICIAL NCAA Championship Rifle Thread - 3/12 &

TCU is the worst school!!!

During the final part of today's competition, I heard one of their women flipped Navy the bird.  I even heard that there was picture, maybe, of it, although I can't find it...and some people say you can't really tell if she is holding one finger up, or more, but really, I'm sure she did.  Bunch of no good thugs.  You can tell just looking at them, that it is not beyond those people doing something like that.

The whole championship itself was a disaster.  It seems like nobody from any of those other schools has any respect for our traditions.  They never came over to stand with our team for Blue and Gold.  In fact, can you even believe that that TCU doesn't even have a recording of Blue and Gold?!?  I would have expected them to play that over the announcing system at the end of the competition, and all the schools would gather around in respectful silence...BUT NO, nothing.  They just packed up their gun cases and left, while the mids stood there waiting.  Classless!!!

I was planning on writing the Deans and AD's of the other schools, but I hear there is soon to be a well written letter to several editors by a former RECON marine astronaut diver who now fights lions.  And when he gets done with them, everyone will know what kind of self absorbed losers those other schools produce.  So they better "brace up".
