"Official Prediction". Santiago will probably get hurt - Schurr will fumble excessively and a Plebe will be the starter by mid-season. I hope I am wrong.

The only reasonable decision . . .

but it certainly makes me catch my breath.  Let's hope Angel has been reborn after 9 months of Coach Monken.  Good luck to him.  Good luck to us all.

Re: Santiago to start

When AS is on his game, he's as good as any of the best T.O. quarterbacks in college football. There's plenty of raw talent and ability there. It's just that when the lapses come and he hesitates, it's fatal when you're running our offense. Hopefully Monken worked on his issues with situational awareness and mental toughness. I think Angel is undoubtedly the guy to go with. His fundamentals are more solid than Schurr's and, even though this isn't setting the bar very high, he's definitely better in terms of ball control. Schurr took a big step backwards last year when he had a chance to prove himself, so he's going to have to earn it back if he truly wants the job. At this point in time my trust is 100% with AS.

I tend to agree with that assessment. Angel played most of last season with a bad ankle, which cut back on his running ability a bit.  I think he's fundamentally sound at making reads, a good runner, and he improved substantially between his sophomore and junior seasons.  His biggest shortcoming is his passing arm, and we'll just have to wait and see if that's improved.  Schurr has a little more pizzazz and a better arm, but has a history of coughing up the ball too often. The main reason Santiago got the nod over Schurr last year was his ball security.

I wouldn't have  problem with Schurr getting elevated to the starting role because I think Angel is a very reliable backup at this point in his career.  Having two guys who can play is a good thing.

I consider Aj to be. ths superior athlete. He appears to possess more leg speed and strength as well as mobility. He also has a stronger arm. He gave a clear distinction between the two in Hawaii;albeit for one measly half. Granted he hax been beset with fumbleitis too often to merit a consistent delegation of the QB mantle.

Re: Santiago to start

I love Army football and agree with you that Santiago has some real strengths as a player. I don't think, though, that I've ever seen him play a really complete game as QB. One of the best T.O quarterbacks in college football? Let's be real...up to this point, Keenan Reynolds' having a mediocre game has been better than AJ or AS having a very good game.Army quarterback play needs to take a step up for the team to have a successful season. Not elite performance, but better than last year.

Reynolds is obviously a far superior QB and all-around athlete than Santiago. Santiago has had flashes of brilliance at times, though, and if he can make those flashes more consistent then I definitely think he could hang with Reynolds and give him a good game. Big "if", of course, though.

Good luck to Angel, AJ and a plebe.

The plebe? Hey why not? You might be right in your probability.

Of course, AS is the starter. Easy decision for JM.

Who else do we have at the moment?

Certainly no Ron McAda.

Re: Santiago to start

I am willing to give him a another chance and realize he is the best Army has, but saying Santiago is one of the best ever and Brilliant is setting the expectation bar way too high.  RE may be unpopular, but he did not want Army to lose, he knows the TO and knew Santiago was not the answer.  It is my understanding that JM tried like heck to find someone else also.  I have closely followed the TO from Sassaman to TS and wish I could share your optimistic attitude.  I will stay as positive as I can and say he can manage a TO, is experienced and does not fumble as much as TS.  He should be better this year than last, but he doesn't have the breakaway speed that forces Ds to commit to him (double option does not work).  He is conservative and works hard.  TOs usually catch defenses by surprise initially .  If Army can  roll up a big lead, he is competent, but coming from behind and holding close leads are not in his skill-set.  JM will get the most out of the hand he was dealt but 5 wins will be a stretch.  I am sticking with a shaky 4 as my prediction and Buffalo is a game we have to win.

While I'll agree the AS is the best option to start game 1 (by default perhaps), surely you aren't serious here?

Santiago is very limited. With dozens and dozens of NCAA teams employing option-based offenses, you can't make that statement. He isn't even the best QB on this roster.

Re: Santiago to start

We have a weakness at QB this season as last season.

Nobody can effectively throw the football and nobody can catch what is thrown to them.

Just watch the QBs last weekon tv throwing a football. ALL are better than what we have now.

Unless JM can perform a miracle here, I don't know what's going to happen this year.

I am tired of one dimensional football anymore. You are not going to win with run, run, run. You just can't in today's game.

Re: Santiago to start

I agree. JM will squeeze the best out of Santiago but we really don't have a good QB who can lead this team to more than 4 wins. The OL is half wrecked already. Losing Gilbert and shifting McDonald to tackle is a stop-gap deal and as for Hugenberg, a left handed snapper, is going to be a problem on the shotgun if we use it which I think JM will try to use some of the time..

Re: Santiago to start

Angel's best game was the LaTech game in Dallas last year....he was superb.....also Eastern Mich.
If the O is in sync.....he's a confident QB.
I like the choice.

He's not a world beater......but neither is the current BAMA QB.......he's a " game manager"...." ball distributor"
Lets the Horses run !

I'm sure the coaching staff is sleeping well tonight, knowing you're giving him a second chance.
