Re: Navy Uniforms...

Those are some sweet looking uniforms. People around the office were talking about them this morning.

All I could respond with was "yeah...but we are sporting a black helmet at some time this season". confused

Re: Navy Uniforms...

Nice uniform. Shades of TOP GUN and I do wonder about the (sun glasses) cool  black tinted visor on the helmet. Also, uniforms will help an opponent to pick out the plebes and youngsters. Lastly, does not seem to be in the best interest of "the brotherhood" on the field (rather than uniting - Midshipman class rank can separate) in my humble opinion. Overall a distraction, but if you win - isn't that all that matters? blah2

The 2013 and 2014 NCAA rulebook contains two specific rules relating to helmet visors. Visors may only have the manufacturer or distributor label present. This label should be no larger than 2 and ¼ inches. The other rule states that eye shields must be clear, have no tint and are to be made from molded material. Players who are in violation of these rules will not be eligible to play unless their equipment is changed to meet these criteria. While the rulebook states that there are no exceptions, individuals with special eye conditions may get medical clearance and NCAA approval to bypass these rules.

Re: Navy Uniforms...

I pretty sure just about every uniform release has shaded visors (for Nike, UA, and others)...including ours.  It is odd to have eyes and a face showing on a mannequin or an unknown uniform model.

These visors are used for glare I think, and not getting poked in the eye.

I thought that was the reason for EYEBLACK.--to neutralize sun glare.

I don't understand this in any way.

Root for them, why? So they can get more exposure, continue to draw better recruits and keep beating our brains in? How about no. I hope they fall apart at the seams all year long, lose their coach to a bigger school and regress.

Hopefully, Navy will blow Ohio State out of the water.  Military needs the PR boost.

There's something to root for. Navy wins, they get some great PR, attract more recruits and continue beating us senseless.

Insane.

Re: Navy Uniforms...

I hate it when people act like they're above other rivalries and it's good to root for Navy. I'm not saying we'll ever be a football factory (nor should we) but, imagine hearing an Alabama fan rooting for Auburn against anyone. It just doesn't make sense.

Your rival's success directly impedes your progress when you're competing for the exact same recruits. Why would anyone want those people to do anything but fail?

Just because those guys in Maryland wear uniforms doesn't mean they should get support from Army fans. It makes no sense.

I suppose if pressed I would allow that I respect their service. I don't let that overshadow the fact that their success is a detriment to ours.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

Re: Navy Uniforms...

Nothing to complicated. I don't blame Navy for our struggles and shortcomings; I prefer we rise to meet them, rather than they regress to our level; I have a few close Annapolis friends from deployments; I have ties to UMichigan and I hate Ohio State; and I like underdogs and upsets.

Oh, and Auburn-Alabama is not what I would like Army-Navy to be...players clearly lacking basic grammar skills and fans destroying campuses and threatening each other's lives doesn't seem productive for the services or the country.

Re: Navy Uniforms...

I agree with Gray Trou.  Back in the "old days", from Beast Barracks on, the response "Beat Navy, Sir" from a plebe,  meant something.  Beating Navy was existential - virtually, life or death for a plebe.  And this feeling grew through the four years.  A loss to Navy was gut wrenching, sickening, meant tougher classes and lower grades, not to mention gloom period.  No mercy for Navy!

Today, how embarrassing is the "Beat Navy" after the alma mater at Michie.  Who cares, as cadets walk to their tailgates with family and girl/boy friends.  Just another euphemism - meaningless rhetoric.  This is just as big a challenge for the Supe.

Sorry to continue to change the topic but I could not resist.  And I also have good friends that are USNA grads - and they feel sorry for me.eek

Go Army Beat Buffalo!   The first step to beating Navy!

Re: Navy Uniforms...

Speaking from a Annapolis guy's perspective (one who will be attending 4-6 Navy games this year and who, by the end of the year, will have attended 1 game at Michie per year for the last 4 years) I understand both perspectives.

I have a several great friends who went to West Point and my general inclination is to root for the military guys. And in fact, the service etiquette book issued to NA plebes (I think it's the same one issued to MA plebes) instructed us to always root for service academies.

That said, I do admit to feeling some relief when Army and Air Force lose, as it makes me less concerned about whether we can subsequently beat them (I can be unconflicted about Air Force after we play them and Army in a bowl). Kind of like the way I'm now more nervous about Temple and Rutgers after last night even though if we do beat them, last night's games will make us look better. But it doesn't mean that I want Army or AF to lose.

I also understand that the three schools are all fishing in a limited recruiting pool and so success among the three is to a certain extent a zero sum game. In that sense, I like it when Army and Air Force are down but not because I want them to be down, but only because it may be a side effect of us being up.

Also, I think the discussion about the comparison to other rivalries is somewhat overwrought. I also have UMich ties, and I know that Big Ten fans root for Big Ten teams when they're playing non-Big Ten teams. Michigan fans do not root for USC in the Rose Bowl, even against OSU. I don't think service academies rooting for each other is any different (in fact, there ought to be an even tighter bond).

I have never and will never root for usna to win at anything. The brotherhood crap that the announcers try and sell at Army-navy disgusts me. I have no respect for their football program especially after they ran the score up last year with that double reverse. Hope they lose every game to include against Air Force. Here's hoping that tOSU scores 100 on them tomorrow.
