Getting to West Point

Getting to West Point

Forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere, but it's been a while since I've been up to West Point for a football Saturday and wanted to get some insight about transportation.

I'll be coming up from Brooklyn for the Rice game. Being a city dweller, I won't have a car. Plan is to take Metro North to Garrison. I'm curious as to what my options are from Garrison to West Point. The last time I came up, I called a cab, and it was absurdly expensive ($70) and it wasn't even a football Saturday. I've heard something about there being a ferry from the Garrison train station to South Dock. Does anybody have any info on that?

One complicating factor is that I was planning on sticking around for the Men's Soccer game at 7pm. So even if there is a ferry available, it likely won't be running when it's time to head back. Anybody have a lead on reliable cab services that don't charge an arm and a leg? Any other options I'm not considering?

It's tough to get to and from Garrison station.  I always relied on the ferry as a cadet, or a buddy to pick me up.  On football Saturdays, there are a good amount of people going back-and-forth, so you could risk it and try to hop in with someone.  It will be especially difficult at 9:30-10pm after the soccer game, however.  I wish I had a better option for you, but scheduling/pre-negoiating a taxi or car service is probably the way to go.

The Ferry service is for cadets, their guests, and staff only (because it ends at South Dock on post) and it ends for the season on November 2nd.

My recommendation would be to rent an economy car for the day or weekend. It would be far cheaper and give you more flexibility in the long run.

Re: Getting to West Point

I've been going up by train on game days for years and have never had a problem getting from Garrison to Highland Falls. There are almost always cabs waiting at the station on game day mornings, and if there aren't then you rarely have to wait long. If somebody charged you $70 to cross then you got swindled. We rarely ever pay more than $10 a head to cross the Bear Mountain Bridge, although we always just ask the driver to take us to Highland Falls (prior to entering South Gate). Maybe you just got a bad company or a bad driver who took you for a ride. I can assure you that on game day you won't pay more than $15 per person to go from Garrison to Highland Falls. If you're still unsure then make sure you agree on a price with the driver before you get in. Academy Taxi is the most ubiquitous service in the area and they've always been pretty reliable and fair-priced for us, at least going over to Highland Falls. Getting a cab back to the station after the game is usually a little bit tougher but you'll get back eventually if you're persistent enough.

I'd strongly suggest walking into Highland Falls after the soccer game and calling a cab from there so that they don't have to deal with hassle of going through security and finding you on campus. Definitely call, but also keep in mind that on game days there will occasionally be cabs from Academy and some of the Peekskill companies lurking about town looking for fares, so don't be afraid to try to hail one if you see one. If the soccer game ends at 9-ish then you ought to have plenty of time to make it back to Garrison in time for the last trains, even if the cab drags his feet. Like I said, go with Academy.
