New Supe

New Supe.  He was a football player and the Comm a few years back. Maybe we'll see some changes. Sure do see Odierno's hand in this.

PETA won't like the wiki entry that he once strangled a buck...

with his own hands near Lake Fredrick. Was an undersized, overachieving cenrter in mid-70's. Hard to believe he'll take all the losing at football lying down.

RE: New Supe

Is he coming in this summer?

New Comm just took over - rather unusual for both to change in such a short interval, isn't it?

Expect that this adventure is going to be difficult.
It is going to be hard.
And expect to win.

Gotta love any guy whose Wikipedia bio includes the phrase "physical altercation with a deer."

RE: New Supe

The timing of the new Comm was probably done in anticipation of the new Supe this summer. Supe is usually pretty damn close to five years on the nose.

I think General Caslen is the first guy in the modern era (maybe ever?) to serve as both Comm and Supe.

As for the hope that he can fix Army Football, unfortunately I think his chances are better of getting another deer bare-handed!

Beat 'em!

RE: New Supe

*quick* glance at Wikipedia shows at least two comm/supes, but not modern era

Sladen, USMA 1890 - comm 1911-1914, supe 1922-1925
Stewart, USMA 1896 - comm 1923-1926, supe 1926-1928

Definitely possible that I missed others...

That's a nice way of putting it.

RE: New Supe

Theree were family matters related to his decision to request early retirement. The wife was extremely unhappy with the assignment. She rarely if ever took part in social activities. There was often a female staff member who stood in for her at official receptions. The decision to retire was made in early autumn and the staff had been alerted to schedule the sitting for the official Supe portrait this year instead of next.
It is normally a five year sunset tour.

Re: New Supe

In the event that Army again has a rotten record (0 to 5 wins as anything less then 6 wins is below average) we can only hope the new Supe knows enough that changes in staff need to be made. Although I feel they should have already been made.

I can not see any support for a HC that in 5 years (if Army again finishes below .500 in 2013) has not yet finished the regular season above .500. Also why keep a guy who has lost double the number of games he has won?  (lost 32 regular season games won 16 through 2012)

Also a nice way of putting it . . .

RE: New Supe

Just think, if he put together back to back seasons of 9 wins, he would still have a losing record. Two with 10 wins would only get him to .500.

That seems a little strange. There probably isn't a better sunset tour in the Army than being Mrs. W.P. Supe. After many years of being an Army wife, she should know how to grin and bear it.

RE: New Supe

I know nothing of the specifics in this case, but it doesn't sound as strange as you may think. WP is a different environment and culture than the rest of the Army, especially at the senior level. Beyond the Supe and Comm, most of the other senior officers have been there for longer terms. Add in the "boss" dynamic and it can make things much different than other places, especially given the never ending schedule of events to attend, people to host, etc. so, it's only a great sunset tour if you enjoy that kind of lifestyle. It's an entirely different level than a brigade commander's spouse!

I hope it's not a matter of bad health, or anything like that.

Beat 'em!

RE: New Supe

General Huntoon was Commandant of the U.S. Army War College when I attended. I am a huge fan. Part of the reason for that is Mrs. Huntoon - with the way things set up, my bride had a lot more face time with Mrs. Huntoon than I did with the General. She was well-loved by the whole community of future brigade commanders / future GO's wives whom she counseled on getting through the events, hosting, lifestyle, etc. Just great people.
The Huntoons also had a LT son in theater while we were at Carlisle.

So, yeah, hope it isn't a matter of bad health or anything else...

Creates hope when hope becomes forlorn

I think Huntoon was a big part of the problem. Seems like the new guy was actually in the Army

Re: New Supe

slhNavy91, I've got to back you up here. I met Mrs Huntoon only once, but she was delightful. It was R Day this past summer, and I had spent a few hours at the cemetery, and walking about on a warm day. I was terribly thirsty and she introduced herself and invited me to tour their home (not the familiar supes home, as that was undergoing a major renovation, but near to that) and offered a cold glass of water. She told stories of her time as an army wife and I found her to be a warm and engaging personality. She seemed a great lady. I wish her and the general the best in whatever comes next for them.

Re: New Supe

I am very happy that we have a new Sup and Com I think some things in the Corps need to be "tightened-up". The academic side is great but the military dicipline, marching, wearing of the uniform, difficulity of Beast Barracks, etc have been sliding for some years now.
