Looks like we finally have a QB commit

Ben Okum a lefty from CA.

I was worried when Jihad committed elsewhere.  I don't know if he would have been willing to change his name to Jihad A. Navy.  The A. standing for against.

Seems like our coaches still do a very good job recruiting the West Coast.

He's listed as a DB recruit. Played both ways in H.S. NT

Not that it really matters, but scout.com lists him as a QB recruit.

Expect that this adventure is going to be difficult.
It is going to be hard.
And expect to win.

If it doesn't matter why did you bother? For the record....

google his name and nearly every scouting service lists him as a DB. He looks great both ways on his demo reel.

Sal says Okun, a direct admit, will play wherever he's asked.

Not  only is he a QB and CB, but he punts and returns punts too.

That's why it doesn't matter what position any website lists for him or any other recruit.

He looks great in his highlights reel. Quick-footed and slippery on offense (perfect for the TO) and tenacious on defense. Should be a great player if RE (or his successor) grooms the kid properly.

Just curious: Have you ever seen a highlight reel in which the player of interest DID NOT look good?  Highlight reels are highly selected.

I've seen a lot of tapes HS men's bball players send to colleges, as I know several individuals who are head or asst coaches in D1 men's basketball.  Without fail, these prospects make every shot ... in their highlight reels.

If you have a relative or good friend doing all the video recording and editing, it's a lot easier to capture enough good stuff to impress these days, although there is an advantage to playing quarterback who is usually the center of attention for most people to start with.  It's a bit more difficult to capture good stuff for an offensive guard.  You have to be really focused to see what they're doing, as I know from being the father of an offensive guard:-)

That being said, the video is all we have to go on, and the kid looks pretty shifty.  I think I like him better on defense than on offense.  Seems to have a nose for the ball.  May be better at safety, where his quarterback experience allows him to sniff out the play.  Don't know what kind of speed he has from watching the video.  There's not much breakaway action.

We always seem to get a lot of QB commits but most of them are usually shifted to other positions and the ones who usually make it at QB and don't make it as a srartert on the team never hardly play in the games.

QBs in high school football are like shortstops in baseball, often the best athletes on their team, but not always playing in their optimal position, especially if they rely more on their running ability than their passing ability.  Steelman is an example as well. There's no way he could play QB in the pros, but he may be a good enough athlete to make it at another position.

RE has said several times that he likes to recruit QB because they are - as glarson65 said - the best athletes on the team and usually have demonstrated leadership skills.

However, it is 11:25 worth of good stuff, I believe all from his senior year.  Looks like his HS team has some very good receivers too.  #83 was very impressive.  Do they accept package deals?
