Boise State backing out of Big East

Boise State backing out of Big East

Though they never spent a day in the Big East they will still have to pay the exit fee ($10M)...I suspect SDSU and ultimately Navy are not far behind.

Re: Boise State backing out of Big East

If Navy leaves the BE, they should have to pay 10 million too. If they do leave, Gladchuck and the Navy Supe will cost their Athletic department 10 million big ones because of their decision.
I always have said on this forum, just stay the hell away from conferences. You won't win in any of them and it will cost ya' anyway when it doesn't pan out.

ALWAYS KEEP YOUR OPTIONS OPEN AND CONFERENCE FREE, especially for us who doesn't have that kind of money to throw around in the first place.

SDSU is likely right behind them, since they won't even have to pay an exit fee because their contract stipulated that if Boise State backed out, they could back out for free.

BTW, despite some of the reports, I believe the Boise State exit fee may only be $5M - which is what TCU paid.   The league had voted to raise the fee to $10M last year, but only if four schools joined at that time, including Air Force.   Since that didn't happen, I don't think the fee was raised.

Re: Boise State backing out of Big East

Navy isn't schedule to join until 2015, so if they decide to back out I find it hard to believe they would incur an exit fee...something tells me they made sure they had an out clause as they committed when things were still somewhat up in the air.  I didn't know about the $5M, but it makes sense to me that both SDSU and Boise would prepare for the BE to collapse amongst the uncertainty...and build in easy (or easier) ways out.

Re: Boise State backing out of Big East

I was a huge proponent of Army going into the BE and still think that we need to go somewhere. But it is now EXTREMELY clear that this conference is dead and the AD did the right thing now moving into the BE.

I have to believe that the exodus of other teams will give Navy an out that should not cost them much, if anything.

The question is now what? Along with Navy, we have to find somewhere that makes sense and there are not a lot of options. Playing an independent schedule is not going to translate into dollars and creating a decent schedule, especially home games, is going to get tougher.

So we have to do something. Or maybe "something" will come to us? Who knows.

BTW, to all my fellow Army fans, Happy New Year everyone.

Or maybe they should pay whatever fee that they and the Big East agreed to - just like Boise State will pay the fee they agreed to.

In Navy's case, the fee would be zero because the BE "landscape" has changed.  IF Navy opts out, they won't have to pay.

Expect that this adventure is going to be difficult.
It is going to be hard.
And expect to win.

RE: Boise State backing out of Big East

BTW, Boise will make up the fee pretty quickly since the MWC gave them an incredibly sweet deal wrt tv money and the MWC will "help" Boise with the exit fee.

(Sweet to Boise, that is. Nowhere near sweet for the rest of the conference.)

Expect that this adventure is going to be difficult.
It is going to be hard.
And expect to win.

I see that the linked USAToday article still shows the $10M buyout figure, but ESPN has now changed their article to reflect a $5M buyout.   I think the latter is correct.

Re: Boise State backing out of Big East

I have little doubt that SDSU will decide to return to the MWC, and I would expect that we'll hear something within a matter of days.  Navy is almost certainly reconsidering, and I suspect that their AD is discussing options with our AD in the background.  Unless we could join one of the BCS conferences, television revenue is not a significant isssue for either of us at this point; so the only real concerns that need to be addressed are scheduling and bowl game availability.  If we can be resolve those issues, I see no reason to join a conference at this point.

BTW, there was a rumor floating that UConn and Cincinatti were not happy with the BE because it's no longer a good basketball conference, and they were discussing forming a conference that would include schools with good basketball as well as football teams.  Of course that would fall by the wayside if either or both were invited to join the ACC or Big 12.

Another rumor has it that the Big Ten wants to add two more teams and they have their eye on Kansas and possibly Florida State, although Florida State is considered geographically undesireable.  Cincinatti would seem like a reasonable alternative.

The saga continues......

The special bonus is the MWC is going to help with the exit fee.  They bail on us.  Then bail on the bail and we get pay for the privlege of welcoming back that glorified juco

Boise State backed out of the Big East due to travel concerns and the fact that, in desperation, the Mountain West bent over for them, giving them a deal they could not refuse. BSU will be receiving more than twice as much TV revenue as the other MWC members. I am glad that the Big East did not agree to BSU's demands. Most likely, San Diego State will also go back to the MWC rather be stranded alone in the far west. At any rate, the Big East is far from "dead". It will not only survive but will still have the 6th best revenue, exposure and bowl access of the 10 FBS conferences. Look for the future membership to be:

Navy (football-only)
UConn
East Carolina
USF
UCF
Temple
UMass
Memphis
Tulane
Houston
SMU
Tulsa (or Army??)

Re: Boise State backing out of Big East

This is always a problem when you get mixed up with conferences.
They ALL tell you what you can do and they tell you not what to do.
They set the schedules, the dates when you play and the time of the day when you play.
Then when you are sick and tired of the baloney and you want to leave you pay them an exit fee for the "privelige" of leaving.
Hey, we 'aint vying for any national championships anymore and our program is such that winning a conference championship would be nearly a miracle so just stay as an indy and try to win a CIC trophy once every two, three years and try to get the best record we can get with the schedules we have every season.
What more can Army ask for anyway?

Re: Boise State backing out of Big East

I have to agree with Rab.  That rendition of the Big East looks awfully similar to C-USA, and I'm not sure playing those teams is any more attractive than playing 4 or 5 MAC squads or, if that wears thin, other mid-level or BCS squads that become available.blah2blah2blah2

Re: Boise State backing out of Big East

Unfortunately, i have to agree too.....the new Big East is just a re-do Conference USA with a couple of different teams.....its a mess out there right now and I am not sure where Army fits in, at all.

The Navy brass need to be looking closely at this situation as it develops. Not sure this is what they envisioned either.....

Re: Navy Staying in Big East

Navy is confirming it's commitment to the Big ??? East.  It will be interesting.  It looks like the big East may be able to hold itself together for a while with Temple-UConn and a bunch of old Conf USA foes.  But for those teams, they are joining pretty much the same Conf USA that Army struggled in.  I am sure Navy will do better with more creativity.  Sutton got ultra conservative with the "bone" in those latter days of his tenure and he made Todd Berry possible.  Navy will not screw it up as badly, but I still like controlling our schedule and I hope Army does not follow.  I cannot wait to watch them try and make a go of it.

Re: Boise State backing out of Big East

Assuming SDSU exits stage left and if the rest of the Big East membership stays as projected, then by 2015 its football membership will be:

Connecticut
Cincinnati
South Florida
Houston
SMU
Central Florida
Memphis
Tulane
East Carolina
Navy

At that point they may look to add another two teams so they can split it into two divisions with a nice even twelve. Maybe Old Dominion (already a Big East member in Field Hockey) or another mid-major central/eastern school who's having issues with the current conference could be enticed to join. I wouldn't have any objections to Army joining such an arrangement, since it's a conference we'd be competitive with and one that would make for way more exciting road trips. We're pretty much a de facto member of the MAC at the moment, and personally I'd much rather go visit New Orleans, Tampa, and Memphis than Rust Belt ghost towns like Muncie, DeKalb, and Ypsilanti every year.

Most assuredly, the Navy AD is not going to come out and say they made a mistake in joining the BE.

RE: Boise State backing out of Big East

Or more likely, Navy won't end up following through with its plans to join if it ends up looking like a mistake. We don't join til 2015 and while I don't know the exact terms, I know he negotiated an exit clause if things fall apart before we join. As of now, however, even a slightly weakened Big East is preferable to independence for a bunch of reasons.

Yep, even Notre Dame is no longer fully independent (partial ACC membership), and if they can't do it, nobody can. The new Big East will enjoy the best revenue, TV exposure and bowl access below the Top 5 conferences, not to mention, easier recruiting in the Florida, Louisiana and Texas hotbeds. With a little time, we can build a good conference and I hope Army will come in with Navy. Army did not fare well in C-USA because you experimented with the spread offense and got away from option football. There is no reason at all that Army cannot compete as well as AFA and Navy with the coach that you now have.
