My BS meter just went off.  Maybe he had to give up his scholarship, but plenty of folks currently enrolled in college apply to the academies.

That appears to be poor editing or Frank not understanding the way SAs work.

If he wanted to talk about that angle, it would have been more accurate to say "Fullam had to give up his scholarship and rank on the Vandy depth chart to attempt AFA Basic Cadet Training, without the guarantee he would complete training or eventually go to pilot training."

While I will readily admit, I found that quote somewhat jarring and contrary to personal knowledge; If that is the one thing you found to comment on in that article....you need a beer and a quiet place to sit.

I also learned this info from the new story:

"His grandfather Wayne was an Air Force fighter pilot who was shot down and killed in Vietnam in 1967. But heck, aint nothing but a shooting war, two downed airmen, five years in Hanoi, and some gold prop and wings for Cadet Fullam.
