Reestablish the rivalry with BYU?

Reestablish the rivalry with BYU?

I have a feeling that Notre Dame's desire to have two SAs on their schedule isn't going to be high and finding other "Big Boy" programs to fill in that desired exposure payday is going to be a tough sell.  What are your thoughts on reestablishing the Falcons longstanding rivalry with BYU with a home and home 4 year contract?

They want to play you why ?eek1 There has to be something in it for both teams. No insult intended, just curious about your reasoning. BTW......I'm also curious why you want to play them.....your new league, w/o the Borg, is plenty tough.

Re: Reestablish the rivalry with BYU?

Neutral.

Pro:
1. They would bring a good crowd to Falcon stadium (lots of Mormons in the springs).
2. We have a history of playing them.
3. They would actually come to falcon Stadium

Con:
1. Nobody outside the MWC thinks of them as a big boy program.
2. 65000 is a nice crowd.....but nothing like @Michigan, Oklahoma, Tennessee, or ND.
3. Half their team is >24 yr old and married.....is that really a fair match up?
4. We only win 23%of the time.....we are 20% vs ND.
5. They think they are much better than the rest of the MWC....they need opponents? Join the conference.

Well lets start with the need to fill their independent schedule and possibly working a deal similar to the one Notre Dame made with the ACC to gain access to bowl packages.

Love the idea of reestablishing the rivalry with the U, er...Y.  As soon as they rejoin the MWC, it's a date.

Re: Reestablish the rivalry with BYU?

Not in favor of it in the present dilemma BYU finds itself. When the Y went independent they had to create their own TV contract. The result is a mish-mash schedule of games on Thursday and UGH Friday nights. If AF NEVER plays another Friday night game I'll be satisfied. I'd rather see AF play Stanford, Georgia Tech, Duke, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Boston College, Wake Forest, Rice in future years.

That's a bit of revisionist history.  BYU became independent in order to "create their own TV contract".  Your post makes it seem like they cobbled together their TV contract after they decided to go independent which isn't the case because they'd been working on the TV deal for about 5 years before going independent.  They were able to make nearly as much money per game ($800k-$1.2M) on ESPN (with 3 guaranteed minimum per year) as they were per year in the MWC TV deal.  http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/c...erence.html.csp

Re: Reestablish the rivalry with BYU?

The point here was that when BYU went independent they dumped all their MWC games that first season which caused them to scramble and put together a schedule of 6-7 new opponents on short notice. While they had the backing of ESPN in their TV deal, ESPN forced their hand to play a lot of Thursday and Friday night games because they reserve prime time slots on Saturdays for the Big 10, PAC 12, SEC, Big 12.

I don't see BYU's time slots getting any better unless they are a perennial top 10 team ala ND. That said if you schedule BYU, expect to play on a Thursday or Friday. Something I'm just not in favor of.

Also FWIW I never considered ND or BYU as "rivalries". Some good battles over the years but I would never elevate them to "rivalry" status. We have TWO rivals at Air Force. The only two that matter.
