DB Gavin McHenry

Posted: 1/14/2013 11:35 AM

DB Gavin McHenry

Ran a 6.96 / 60M dash last weekend in what appears to be his first race as a Falcon.  This was better than the fastest 60M dash from last year (6.97), although sophmore Uzor Udenski ran a 6.95 in the same meet this year.  Udenski didn't win the meet (sprints aren't Air Force's strongest event).  But Gavin running that quickly in his first race bodes will for the future.  It would be interesting to see GM in some reverse type plays next year, like Mikel Hunter was used as a FR and SO.

Reggie Rembert's fastest 60m was 6.95......no doubt McHenry is fast, just hope it will translate to football. Rembert got a few snaps on the offensive side of the ball.

I'll keep my eye on McHenry; whenever I see speed on paper I always temper my enthusiasm since players like Philip Ofili come to mind.  He ran a 4.3 40 his sophmore year a few years back but (even he admitted) that he struggled to play at that speed during the game.

Does anyone know if DB Bobby Watkins (I think his father played for the Cowboys) is anywhere near the top of this spring's depth chart?

I don't think Watkins suited up this year.  He was on the roster in 2011, but didn't appear this year.

Re: DB Gavin McHenry

An update on McHenry...  he ran VERY well for USAFA at Nebraska this past weekend, qualifying for the finals in the 60m dash with a time of 6.96 against sprinters from the likes of Nebraska, Iowa, Wichita State, and Oral Roberts (he finished 5th in the final).  I don't have to tell this well-educated crowd that running the same time at (near) sea-level as he did at USAFA the week before is a significant improvement (D=(1/2)*Cd*Rho*V^2)  He's the real deal. (Photo)

In other track notes, our C4C pole vault recruit from TX (Dylan Bell) vaulted 17'4+" in Reno to move to 5th all-time for AFA indoors.  Fully SIX of our vaulters could clear 17' this year--no wonder Scotty Steffan was named Collegiate Pole Vault Coach of the Year.

Great shots Stalag!  Hey, who is our male shot putter?  Looks like a BIG guy?

One of our shot putters is none other than inside LB James Chambers.  In the outdoor season, he also throws discus and has done so for the last couple of years.  I think he placed in the conference meet in the discus last year.

Love the speed Gavin has and hopefully his ability to tackle and position himself properly to prevent a pass from being caught are just as strong, because right now those last two skills are lacking in the AF secondary.

Wow, 24th in the nation after 2 races!  Can't wait to see how he does in the 100M or 200M.
