Fresno and the Armed Forces Bowl

Fresno and the Armed Forces Bowl

The Falcons won with D last night and got an invite to the Armed Forces Bowl. Congrats to the seniors in earning a W in their last home game of their college football careers. For those of you who no doubt will respond to the invite by saying these Falcons don't deserve it I'll just go jump in right now and say BS. You may not like the requirements to get a bowl invite, but it is what it is and while most bowls aren't money makers the benefit of continuing to practice and play cannot be disputed.

Before the Falcons get to Fort Worth they face TD and his much improved Fresno team. If the AF O cannot pass against Fresno they will absolutely get crushed. The air attack has to return and that will start with the O line regaining the level of play they produced at the front end of the season. CD knows he has to do his part and failure to produce is unacceptable, because TD will stack the box and shut the Falcons run attack down.

Obviously the Fresno O presents a Nevada level challenge to the AF D and the Falcons have to replicate the type of performance they had against the Pac. I liked the very physical style of play the D had last night and they will need that against the Dogs.

I think a win over Fresno would make the Armed Forces Bowl look much more attractive to attend for some Falcon fans.

GO AF!

Mike

Re: Fresno and the Armed Forces Bowl

It was nice to see the seniors celebrate their final home game with a win. They will, as Thud said, have to bring a high-level effort to Fresno. The D definitely stepped up last night time after time and even forced a three and out on a sudden change.

I think it's sad if the support of some is predicated on the number of wins they have. But that probably is the reality. Win or lose in Fresno, there are a lot of USAFA football fans in DFW that will be there to support them. I'm lookinG forward to the last two games of the season!

Re: Fresno and the Armed Forces Bowl

Unless this team beats the Bulldogs, they don't deserve a Bowl at 6-6, with only 5 FBS wins, and bad loses to UNLV and Army.

Sagarin has the Falcons ranked at #98 - there is a good chance this team will get destroyed in a Bowl, and end up with a losing record - the first in 6 years. Will that help build momentum for next year - or breed a sense of entitlement and self satisfaction?

1st; I have NEVER given any credence to Sagarin. Never have and never will. (But that's another debate which you won't change my mind on, so lets not even discuss that).

As for DESERVING a bowl game, Says Who? What I mean is; why should your or my opinion of how games went this year have any influence on whether or not a team is deserving to go to a bowl game? Last year, there were some 5-7 teams I believe that got a bowl invite because they couldn't fill all the bowl games with bowl eligible teams.

Air Force has a bad habit, for many years, of playing to the caliber of their opponent. Many times we do so much better when we are the underdog or cornered into a Must-Win position. We also play down to some teams. Yes, we played questionably and lost to teams like UNLV, Navy, and Army. Which we shouldn't have lost. We almost lost to Wyoming.

But in athletics, there is no "Deserving". The only time that comes to play is if another team DOESN'T RECEIVE a bowl invitation, and WE DO. So; let's leave it right there. If at the end of the regular season; if you can find a BOWL ELIGIBLE TEAM that DOESN'T RECEIVE a Bowl Invite; THEN we can discuss whether or not air force DESERVES to go to a bowl game. In the last 10 years, I've only seen a couple of Bowl Eligible teams that didn't receive a bowl invite, who "DESERVED" it more than a team that did get an invite. So, lets wait until you find a team that doesn't get a bowl invite and is bowl eligible, before saying air force doesn't DESERVE to be there.

Its about the money, and the Athletic Department will have to swallow the cost of alot of unsold tickets.  What fan is going to cough up the bucks to travel to Ft Worth to watch Rice, UL-Monore or some other power beat a 6-6 Falcons squad?  Those 10 practices could be pretty damn expensive.

There are a lot of fans that will be traveling from around the country.  Many of the fans will have driven from other parts of Texas--San Antonio, Houston, and Wichita Falls, especially.  You can stay home if you need a  certain record before you come to a bowl game to support the team.  It's an individual choice.  And please quit the attempted justification using the cost of a bowl.  You're not in charge of the budget.  It's like people coming on this site talking about being a taxpayer.  Even Cadets are taxpayers.

We are going to the game to watch Air Force win, by the way, not to watch another team beat them.  It's the last football game these players will ever play, though, and we will be supporting them despite the outcome.

As I recall, the Falcons were one of those teams that didn't go bowling with and 8-4 record during the last years of FDB.

Re: Fresno and the Armed Forces Bowl

The fans who make every home game no matter what day it is played on, what the weather conditions are, who the opponent is or what the Falcon's record is. The kind that stay at the game until there's no time left on the clock and the third verse is played. The kind that donate their time and whatever financial contribution they can afford to support the mission of the Academy, the football program and the USAF. Players families and friends and former players and their family and friends. Grads who actually see the game as a way to support future members of the Long Blue Line.

I could go on but there's no need to. Fly get those extra beds ready the Simler family is going to take you up on that offer to stay at your place!

See the rest of you Fanatics there,

Mike
