MWC Race tight? Check Out Standings, RPI and our AF Seniors

Wow....I won't really say it's parity yet but this is pretty impressive...and very nice to see Air Force in the mix.

Mountain West Men's Basketball Standings as of 1/27/2013

  • 1. New Mexico 17-3, 4-1 MW

  • 2. San Diego State 16-4, 4-2 MW .5 GB

  • 3. Colorado State 16-4, 3-2 MW 1 GB

  • 4. UNLV 16-4, 3-2 MW 1 GB

  • 5. Air Force 12-6, 3-2 MW 1 GB

  • 6. Boise State 14-5, 2-3 MW 2 GB

  • 7. Nevada 11-8, 2-3 MW 2 GB

  • 8. Wyoming 15-4, 2-4 MW 2.5 GB

  • 9. Fresno State 7-12, 1-5 MW 3.5 GB

.

The Mountain West Conference is a mid-major no more.

Heading into Saturday's games, the MW was the second-best conference in terms of RPI, and now that those four games have concluded, we can see just how close the competition is in the wild West.

To start off the action, San Diego State hosted No. 15 New Mexico in the early afternoon. It was never close, as the Aztecs routed the Lobos 55-34, handing New Mexico their worst loss of the shot-clock era. The Lobos managed to make a mere 25 percent of their shots as the supposed best team in the conference looked lost Saturday night, falling in their first MW game of the season.

Then, Boise State was in Nevada for an afternoon game. The Wolfpack jumped out to an early lead, but Boise wrestled it back at 28-27 at halftime. In the second half though, Nevada ran away with the game when they went on a 10-0 run to push their lead to 50-41 and ended up winning 75-59. The Wolfpack had six players score at least eight points, four in double digits, and the second-worst team in the conference knocked off a supposed contender.

At the same time Nevada was beating Boise, Wyoming was hosting Air Force. And for a third time on the day, the team with the better record lost. The Cowboys seemed strong early, with Leonard Washington scoring 14 of his game-high 19 points in the first half, but the Falcons held the 29-25 lead at the break. Air Force pushed their lead to as much as 11 points with under four minutes remaining, though, Wyoming wouldn't quit and got it to 53-48 with two minutes to play. But the Cowboys turned the ball over, missed shots and committed fouls to eventually lose 57-48.

Finally, Colorado State was in California to play Fresno State in the nightcap. The Rams were determined to earn their first MW road win of the season, jumping out to a 16-8 lead and ballooning it to 38-20 at halftime with hot shooting from Wes Eikmeier and Greg Smith. In the second half, Fresno showed their resiliency, bringing the game to within five points with plenty of time, 10 minutes, to play. Colorado State did pull away in the end with clutch free throw shooting by Dorian Green and decent enough defense to win 74-63.

So, as of Sunday morning, five teams are within one game of leading the Mountain West. What an exciting and fun league it has become.

Not only standings, not only RPI but also AF Seniors............

And more reasons to watch and support this team............

****Something you should know and consider:...thanks to the regulars who fire back a response every once in a while, it is very much appreciated by all on this board. If folks reading this can do me one favor, if you are in the local area, please come out and support this team. We have five special seniors that will graduate at the end of this season. Between four of them they have played in 413 of 436 games that have been played by Air Force since they came to the Academy. Todd has played in all 109 having never missed a game and started 96. ike Lyons 102/90 starts (injured part of last year). Fitz 102/46 starts, Taylor 100/79 starts. Add to this list Kyle Green 40/9 and these five have played in 453 games with 320 starts. Time to support this team and these seniors. Time is running out.

IAgree.gif  Yes.  Ditto.  For sure.  Absolutely.  Certainment. Let's go home with our ears ringing (again) because the cheering is deafining.  Let's all bring a friend (or two or more).  Let's turn Clune back into the "Chamber." Gooooooooooooo Falcons!

fantomfan....music to my ears.  I remember those days like it was yesterday.  Many here don't remember 'the Chamber' at all.  It was a vote after I put this together 'years' ago.  It's still appropriate in so many ways.  The late Utah Coach Rick Majearus said (after his last game at Clune in which AF won) " I have played at all the big venues from Cammeron at Duke to the Pit, although smaller, with it's design Clune Arena is as loud or louder than them all when full".   A great compliment.

To help us all remember:

We did an informal poll a while back for a nickname for Clune.  You've probably heard Jim Arthur and even Coach BZxxxxx (name X'ed out) refer to the Chamber in post game talk and on the radio by Jim.  Here's some background...let me know what you think!

Definition of The CHAMBER

When we did our poll this is the definition for the Chamber and why it fits our 'Air Force Academy' so well.

The Chamber … an Altitude Chamber … part of our Air Force Heritage and a possible nickname for Clune Arena  (Clune Arena will never lose its official name, as it honors a great  a great USAFA leader of our past).

A chamber is a small place where individuals are imprisoned ... similar to what we do with our opponents.  More closely to our roots, the altitude pressurization chamber is an essential part of flight training.  All flight crew go to a 'chamber ride’ to experience the effects of high altitude, rapid decompression and lack of oxygen.  The prospect of playing in The Chamber should incite fear in our opponents.  With a (now) 50-1 record in Clune, we have the altitude which sucks the air out of our opponents; we pressure them into turnovers and pressure them on offense  with backdoor cuts and long 3s.  When you have a rapid decompression in an aircraft, the rushing sound of wind as the pressure attempts to stabilize in the closed environment is very loud and confusing.  The same effect when Section 8 and our fans cheer and raise the roof!!  It drives our opponents crazy!

 Yes...welcome to THE CHAMBER

Remember and never forget....anyone else remember that 50-1 record????

Re: MWC Race tight? Check Out Standings, RPI and our AF Seniors

Saturdays game vs SDSU should be a SELLOUT!!!!!!! I've seen nothing to generate interest or excitement for this game from the marketing/ticketing staff so far.

Can somebody call the amateurs in the "marketing" department and tell them this a very significant game on Saturday and it would be in our teams best interest to have a packed house of supporters as a sixth man?!?!

If need be give away the tickets to area kids and their families. This team DESERVES a loud ,packed Clune on Saturday!!!!!!

Cadet Wing, it's time to show up!!!!!!!!!!!

How thrilling it would be to once again see the Sold Out signs enroute to Clune and the "Chamber" reverberate with the deafening sounds of yesteryear as our Falcons do battle with Fresno State and San Diego State tomorrow night and Saturday. It would be great to duplicate that most memorable night when we beat DePaul on our way to the NIT Final Four. Our Falcon team deserves that kind of treatment again. I encourage our Colorado Springs community and Cadets to come to the "Chamber" and earnestly cheer on our Falcon basketball warriors. Replace the torpidness with zany fanaticism. GO FALCONS! Beat the Bulldogs and the Aztecs.

MWC should get 4 bids to the NCAA's..hopefully we could sneak in there.  A Clune Sellout would be fantastic - but even 4-5k can make that place deafening and a blast to watch a game.
