Air Force over Montana State 86-72

Air Force wins over Montana State with an exceptional offensive effort.  Mike Lyons comes across big again going for 29points and 7 rebounds only negative is too many minutes at 37 for the game).  AF finishes at 59% FG and 46% 3pt shooting. Out rebound Montana St 39-28 but do only go 6-11 55% from the FT line, something that must improve as the season goes on.

Defense was up and down for the game.  Allowed 39pts in the first half and 33pts in the second half...much better half considering Montana St had 8 points in the final 4 minutes of the first half.  I thought AF did a better job in the second half getting out on the 3pt shots vs Montana St.  They shot 44% 3's in the first half but only 28% in the second half.  Better effort to get outside but we did allow inside 'slips' when pushing to defend the three.  Must find a good balance but overall not too bad.  It will be a little more difficult versus a more athletic team such as Colorado next game.

Offense was good both inside and outside.  We had three in double figures (Mike 29pts, Taylor 13pts, Todd 10pts) plus 9 points from Max Yon and 22 total points off the bench.  Very good play by Yon, Coggins, Cam Michael and Kam Williams scoring off the bench plus good defensive minutes by DeLovell Earls and our  'bigs by committe' giving Taylor a rest from Marek, Ethan and Chase.  Mike Fitzgerald was exceptional in hustle with 7 hard points and 9 rebounds.  Great effort.

Overall we did what we needed to do.  Need to tighten up and play 40 minutes of defense but a good win for the 5-0 Falcons.

smiley-bounce.gifAnother solid offensive and defensive performance against a respectable Division 1 team. The team finally put their minds to playing better defense in second half primarily because they begin communicating with each other. No doubt the coaches were very influential with that aspect of the game during their halftime comments. The real key to this team is the overall talent level which allows the coach to substitute without any drop off when the starters are replaced. We must cure the free throw percentage now. Consistent free throw shooting in the mid-70% range will cause teams to think about fouling during the crunch time in closer games. Excellent win. GO FALCONS! Beat the Buffaloes.

RE: Air Force over Montana State 86-72

LTC and FF have hit all the key points about last night's win. I would add, that as we left Clune, Dr/Mrs Eagle said, "These guys are a lot better. They are going to win a lot of games this year." Now Dr/Mrs Eagle isn't Dicky V from ESPN, but if she can see improvement in this year's team, it's there. And I agree.

Since there is not much more to talk about, let me complain about the officials. Hey, I made it 4 games without comment!

Randy "Bad Call" McCall, Rick "No Call" Batsell, and KC Ely were absolutely attrocious. We've seen a lot of "Bad Call" and "No Call" at Clune since they are MWC refs, and I've commented about their incompetence a number of times. The Falcons finally got a call at 10:31 in the second half when "No Call" Batsell had to call traveling on the MT St player who terminated his dribble, but slid his pivot foot from the left wing to about the top of the key while he was trying to stop his forward momentum. However, in "No Call's" defense, Taylor B figured out that these guys weren't going to call traveling so he took a couple of hikes in the lane in the last 8 minutes of the contest, but by then, the Falcons had a double digit lead and the game was basically over.

The Falcons were working really hard on taking the charge, and "Bad Call" called every one against the Falcons except for one, which he did get right when a Falcon (as I remember, Kyle Green) was trying to seal the baseline. But on one unbelievable call in the second half, Coleman from MT St gave a forearm to Kam Williams that would make Chris Long of the St Louis Rams proud. It happened right in front of "Bad Call" McCall, and he called Kam for the block even though he was clearly planted and went flying about 5 feet after the forearm.

If the refs would have called half the traveling that was going on by MT St, the Falcons would have had a 15 point half time lead, even with the Falcons turning the ball over 4 times to end the first half.

The best comment of the night was by Falcon Fanatic when he said, "go back to the chruch league!" Right on brother! We may not see KC Ely again since he is mostly a WAC and Southland ref, but "No Call" and "Bad Call" will be back. Yikes!

RE: Air Force over Montana State 86-72

The most important things I've seen this year that are very encouraging.
1.  The adjustments at half-time in EVERY game have paid off immediately.  That's the sign of a good coaching staff and players that respect them and like playing under them.
2.  Attitude.  No stomping around and screaming--but the kind of calm leadership we see from some of our other successful teams.
3.  Fewer turnovers (though the last five mins of the first half last night were an aberration.
4.  TONS of depth with very little apparent drop-off.
5.  No "penalty substitutions" that result in tentative play and dry-spells.  Have we really had a long dry spell in 5 games yet?  Last year, our dry spells were as frequent and predictable as, well, turkey on Thanksgiving.

What we need to improve on:
1.  Consistency on defense.  We're too hot and cold here.

Our first really big test comes Saturday.  We should know a lot more about these guys after CU.

This season is the start of something great, a team that is playing together and having fun doing so.  It is encouraging to see how well they are shooting offensively as a team and how great the play is from the bench.  Defenesively they have improved tremedously from previous years and they are now understanding the need to attack the basket for rebounds (offensively and defensively).  Fan support  is necessary in the stands and online.  Lets stand behind the Falcons.

Re: Air Force over Montana State 86-72

Good win; we've got some momentum and positive trends.

So, my question is who can step up and score some points if a team decides to try to shut down ML?  I know our offense is difficult to 'take a guy out' defensively, but a team could do its best to give him special attention, their best defender, etc.  During the golden years, teams would try to do this with Danny Nwaelele to take his 3pt shot out of the game- freeing opportunities for Burtchi and the others.

Will Fitz finally break out and become a true threat? I've not seen Green play- what's his style?  I know Yon can score a bit- he should be able to step up.  Fletcher won't hesitate to take a good shot so I think he has a chance to as well.

Re: Air Force over Montana State 86-72

Best overall performance from this program that I've seen in the last 5 years.

Depth-13 players saw the court, searching for their identity as a team.

Coaching-players are much looser not afraid to make mistakes for fear of being yanked. I thought this team is much better fundamentally.  Can only conclude this coaching staff was held back by the little Napoleon for years from doing what they really wanted to do.  I saw some legitimate in-game coaching going on.  YEAH!!

Positive coaching and much better in game management. Not a single shot clock violation.

Major test in Boulder Sunday vs CU. The game is on the PAC-10 network but not on ROOT. Hello!?!

Air Force basketball has become entertaining and relevant again!
