The Pirates Plan

Does anyone know what the plan is for this offseason?  Are the pirates actually planning on signing guys like the O-Dawg or rick ankiel or are we all just speculating what could happen?

If thats not the case what is the actually plan for this off season?

Nobody knows for sure. They have hinted at looking at free agents BUT don't hold your breath. The situation that the Pirates will enter the season (after player raises) at about 28 M in payroll (league low)  you would think they will spent some money.

My take...........The Pirates will bring in about 6-7 more cheap minor league arms to staff the bull pen. Then bring one or maybe 2 major league FAs. These FAs may/will be traded at deadline time.  So, their PROJECTED salary may get 40 M or so. BUT after trading deadline dumpoffs management will really spent only about 32 M. Kind of.....same old.........same old. BUT enough of the public is buying the front office BS.............so, why stop.

Welllll.....perhaps.

I would agree with your sentiments if the major league roster churn you describe so well were all that this team was doing.  In that case, yes, you're right, it would be the same old...same old.  The one possibility of redemption, however, is the fact that for two years running, the front office has---believe it or not---done exactly what it should have done in terms of the amateur draft.   Really, I'm hard pressed to find anything to disagree with in terms of the past two drafts.  There have been numerous "over-slot" signings up and down the draft, and even this past year's so-called "reach" pick, first rounder Tony Sanchez, has looked awfully good in his limited professional action thus far.  Granted, he should be mashing in A-ball because he played major college baseball.  Even so, he's done quite well.

The only player you might quibble with just a bit was Tanner Scheppers, and he was a guy who was (and is) a significant injury risk who still received a substantial offer from the Pirates that would have made him a millionaire based on signing bonus alone.

Because of this, I am willing to wait this out for another two seasons to see what happens when  our kids hit the big time en masse---albeit with gritted teeth and with some criticism of some of the deals Huntington has made with our big league club.  But it's hard to argue with the vast improvement in our minor league system, and so I won't.   What will tell the tale is what, if anything, this front office does to add to the young core once it becomes at least somewhat competitive.  If at that point, which I expect will be 2012-2013 and following, if at that point they don't step up to the plate and add some veteran talent, then you will know that they are not serious about winning.

I don't have a problem with the Pirates last 2 amateur drafts. I like the Sanchez draft pick also. I will give them credit for 2 good drafts and spending some money. BUT BUT while I don't know the exact figures I believe the Pirate draft spending is just a Million or maybe two over the league average. Small consolation for being being 53 Million behind ML roster spending.

(I saw a figure that National League ML spending average was 83M. )

RE: The Pirates Plan

There is no reason to go out and sign a bunch of middle of the road veterans just for the sake of spending money. That was the Pirates MO of old. That's why we got guys like Burnitz, Bell and Meares. To justify to the fans that hey we're spending money so don't complain. A rebuilding team does not need to spend money in free agency unless there is a great fit out there. I would argue that a guy like Orlando Hudson would be that kind of fit. However guys like Jason Bay and such are a horrible fit for us. When you pay for free agent talent you always almost get burned. Whatever team that signs Bay is going to regret it in a couple of seasons as he is about to start declining. If the salary is 40 million or 30 million it will make no difference. The core of this team is forced to make under a half million each. That is just smart management. If Garrett Jones was a free agent he would get 8 milion per season. Andrew McCutchen would be in the 10 million dollar range and even Andy LaRoche would be bringing in 3-4 million a year. The fact that all these guys will be making less than half a million each is the reason why our payroll is so low not because we are being cheap. Outside of the very elite free agents like a Holliday or a Bay there aren't any outfielders I would take over Jones or McCutchen. The best free agent first baseman available is a guy we traded away already in Adam LaRoche. Hudson would help our team which is why I wouldn't be opposed to signing him. If a guy like JJ Hardy was non tendered then I would make a run at him as well but I certainly wouldn't trade a Maholm or Duke for him coming off the season he just had. The only spot where we could drasticly improve the team is in the pitching department if we were to sign a John Lackey type but he wants 18-20 million per season. History has shown that even if we were to boost our payroll to the 75 million mark, having a player chew up 20-25% of your payroll usually means disaster for your franchise. Besides, we have a very strong nucleus of young starting pitching and the best way for them to improve is to keep giving them opprotunities. Ross-O took a huge step last year maybe this year its Morton who improves. We need to make minor moves in free agency and that is all. Signing an Ankiel or a Nady on a cheap one year deal, get a left handed reliever for the bullpen and maybe sign a guy like Hudson because he fits a need and can contribute for the next 3 seasons. 2010 will be tough but I expect us to be a competitive team in 2011 and would be really disapointed if they aren't challenging for a playoff spot by then
